Walks and Dates May 2023

The Monthy Shorter Walk followed by a meal will only be on the 5th Wednesday of a month.
The 31st May 2023 is a fifth Wednesday in the month.
As yet no-one has volunteered to sort out the walk and send me the details for the blog.
Suggestions for all Wednesday Walks are always welcome.
Remember to let me know that you plan to walk so that it becomes easier to arrange car sharing. in addition it helps me to know how many route maps I need to bring and on special occasions how many pieces of fruit cake or treats will be needed.
Letting me know that you won't be walking is just as important otherwise I am left guessing as to how many maps to run off and invariably I end up printing too many!
Latest Information About Harris Hikers from 23rd March 2023
After much discussion between group members, those present decided to follow DS’s suggestion that “Short walks with an option of a meal at a nearby venue” should take place on the fifth Wednesday in a month, and members of the group would take it in turns to plan the walk and venue.
There are only four such Wednesdays in 2023.
March 30th, May 31st, August 30th and November 29th.
March 30th - Short Walk and Meal – Cancelled.
DS will plan a replacement walk for “Short Walk and Meal”, currently down for 26th April.
It was also agreed that Wednesday Walks should in the main be walks of around 8 miles with no more than about 1200’ of climb. If proposed walks exceed these suggestions routes should have obvious short cuts to reduce distance and / or climb involved.
It was also agreed that each month a different member of the group should plan the walk.
Which day in the month wasn’t agreed, but it would make sense that it should be the last Wednesday in the month and that would include the “Short Walk and Meal Option” on the fifth Wednesday in the month.
In order to include that walk in the monthly “Dates and Walks Post", details of the walk need to be sent to me by 15th of the previous month.
Wherever possible I would like people to let me know of their intention to walk or not to walk by Monday afternoon/early evening prior to the walk on Wednesday. There isn’t an issue with last minute cancellations for any reason. This happens anyway when adverse weather is forecast at the last minute.
This will enable me to provide the right number of maps/ descriptions, hence reducing unnecessary printing costs.
Where the “Short Walk and Meal” is concerned, the person planning the walk and meal should be contacted directly and informed of theirr intentions as soon as you have made your decision.

This is a walk Ed and I did first did at the end of April 2021 and we were impressed by the display of Bluebells, so naturally it had to be included in our annual Bluebell Wood Walks.
The walk explores the low hills at the northern end of the Clwydian Hills. The final part of the walk takes past Home Farm near Talacre Abbey and then descends to the coast via Tyn-y-Morfa. If time and legs permit, we can make a short detour to visit Big Pool Nature reserve.

This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book “Walks Around Ruabon Mountain, the Clywedog Valley and Hope Mountain." This is described as an exhilarating walk of great variety, on good upland paths and tracks with panoramic views capes. Last time we did this, it was in November and conditions underfoot were still boggy in places. Hopefully at this time of the year it will have dried out a little.

We arrived back at the cars, having completed a very leisurely walk (our slowest for a long time), but the walk today wasn’t one to be rushed!
We had problems on the way home as the main road from Betws-y-coed to Llanrwst was closed, so we had to take the more minor road on the west side of the Afon Conwy and the challenge to cross the narrow bridge into Llanrwst. .
This walk is taken from Dave berry's booklet “Walks Around the Berwyns and The Ceiriog Valley". It is described as a walk of great variety and explores the attractive undulating countryside around Chirk. At times it follows the Offa's Dyke Footpath. Part of the route follows the Llangollen canal towpath and includes going through a short tunnel we may in fact go through a second tunnel. You may wish to bring a torch, but there is a handrail to guide you.
Saturday 20th May 2023.
Llugwy and Lledre.
Distance: 8-9 miles; Climb: 1000'.
Start: Railway station car park in the centre of Betws-y Coed. Grid ref: SH795565.Leave Chester at 8-30 a.m. (It takes about 1 hour 10 minutes from Saltney)
Those planning to walk: Martyn,.
Those not walking: Mike.
This is another walk taken from Dave Berry's new book "Walks Around Betws-y-Coed and the Conwy Valley". This walk links the beautiful wooded Llugwy and Lledre Valleys.
Once more we can use the new Miners Bridge to cross the Llugwy and on to Sarn Helen. Sarn Helen is the former Roman Road, and reaches over 800' before descending in to the Lledre Valley.
Later on there the route involves a steep climb to Llyn Elsi or at least that is what Dave Berry says!
If the weather is good, then this is a really good walk. Forest paths in the past have been on the boggy side, but if need be the worst can be avoided by using the forest tracks.

Wednesday 24th May 2023.

This must be one of the best walks in the Llangollen area, especially on a sunny day. This is a walk that makes you feel like you’re on top of the world with superb views in all directions, including the Dee Valley, Dinas Bran, the Llantysilio Mountains and the Berwyns. This is one of my favourite walks and is always on the list at least once every year.
We usually do this walk in mid-week, so it will be a change to do it on a Saturday but hopefully everyone else will be staying at home to watch the coronation!
At this time of the year, we could still hear and see Cuckoos.
At least one Cuckoo reportedly arrived in the valley at the beginning of the month.
Saturday 27th May 2023.

Leave Chester 08-30 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Ed, Mike .
Those not walking:
This walk is based on a walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Hidden Heart Of North Wales" or "Walks Around the Hiraethrog Moors and Lakes". This is a low level walk and is a gentle stroll around the lake. Hopefully the Osprey has returned to one of the nesting platform in the lake, although a goose had taken over the usual platform after it had been restored after vandals had cut the post down. Hopefully we will see one on the new nesting platform or even fishing in the reservoir. Bring your binoculars if you have them.
Wednesday 31st May 2023.
This will be the fifth Wednesday in the month, one of the Wednesdays that we agreed that different members of the group would take turns to sort out a short walk with an option of a meal at a suitable venue near to the start of the walk.
Ellesmere - Meres, Mosses and Moraines.
Distance: 6.5 / 7.3 / 8 miles; climb: 180'.
Start: Ellesmere Lake Castle Field Car park (Probably Pay and Display). Grid ref: SJ406345. Leave Chester 09-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Ed, Sue and Michel, David S .
Those not walking: Wendy, Nigel, Fran, Mike.
This walk was originally produced by Shropshire County Council and was called “Welshampton Wander Walk 5”, since then it has been included in the AA Booklet “Walks in the Wales and the Marshes” and the Welshampton and Lineal Council’s Walk 4.
The overall distance varies depending on the source of the route. The Shropshire County Council’s route is the longest, with the Welshampton and Lineal Council’s Walk 4 being the shortest, but this misses out Cole Mere.
The walk does go through a short tunnel so bringing a torch may prove to be useful.
The walk visits three meres, The Mere at Ellesmere, Cole Mere and Blake Mere.
When I did the walk in 2005, all I remember was that some of the field paths were rather muddy and we saw a Kingfisher as we joined the canal towpath at Bridge No.1 and there was a noisy heronry on the island opposite the Visitor Centre. A gentle walk involving, field paths, country lanes and a canal towpath. One description states that there are 8 stiles and the most recent description says it is stile free!
