Dates and Walks December 2023

Latest Information About Harris Hikers from 23rd March 2023.
After much discussion between group members, those present decided to follow DS’s suggestion that “Short walks with an option of a meal at a nearby venue” should take place on the fifth Wednesday in a month, and members of the group would take it in turns to plan the walk and venue.
The are no more last such Wednesdays in 2023 is this month.
the next such Wednesadys are in 2024. These are:- January 31st, May 29th, July 31st, and  October 30th.
It was also agreed that Wednesday Walks should in the main be walks of around 8 miles with no more than about 1200’ of climb. If proposed walks exceed these suggestions routes should have obvious short cuts to reduce distance and / or climb involved.
It was also agreed that each month a different member of the group should plan the walk.
This walk should be for the Wednesday in the month and that would include the “Short Walk and Meal Option” on the fifth Wednesday.
In order to include that walk in the monthly “Dates and Walks Post", details of the walk need to be sent to me by 15th of the previous month.
Wherever possible I would like people to let me know of their intention to walk or not to walk by Monday afternoon/early evening prior to the walk on Wednesday. There isn’t an issue with last minute cancellations for any reason. This happens anyway when adverse weather is forecast at the last minute.
Where the “Short Walk and Meal” is concerned, the person planning the walk and meal should be contacted directly and informed of theirr intentions as soon as you have made your decision.

Those not walking:
In the past we have done this walk,as part of a series of walks along the Sandstone trail. It involves Walk 6 and Walk 7 from Carl Rogers' book "Circular Walks on the Sandstone Trail". When done together it was about 10 miles, but last time we did it it was only 8 miles.
I will probably do the same this time.

Wednesday 6th December 2023.

The extra mileage will be made by exploring the Anderton Nature Park, Marshall's Wood, Carey Park, Ashton's Flash and Neumann's Flash.  Bring binoculars with you if you can.
Saturday 9th December 2023.

Leave Chester 9-00 a.m
Those planning to walk: Martyn, .
Those not walking: .
These two walks are taken from Carl Rogers' book "Walking in the Clwydian Hills". One walk is described as an excellent walk which combines the craggy limeston escarpment of Graig with its wide views of the Clwydian Range and the flat moors of Llandegla. The other walk is described as a pleasant walk on parts of Offa's Dyke Footpath and visits Llyn Cyfynnwy with its delightful (my word) views.

Wednesday 13th December 2023.
Graig Fawr from Prestatyn via the North Wales Path and Return via Offa's Dyke Path.
Distance:9-10 miles; Climb: 750'.

Leave Chester at 9-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Sue and Michel, Fran. Mike, Ed, .
Those not walking: Nigel.
This is a walk that I have done many times before and always enjoy. The route uses the North Wales Path and Offa's Dyke path to link up with the walk from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Clwydian Hills".
Saturday 16 December 2023.
Around Llyn Trawsfynnyd.
Cancelled due to the closure of a footbridge across the lake, resulting in quite a long road detour.
See below for the replacement walk.
Distance: 8 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Trawsfynydd Cafe and Fishing Permit Car Park, just off the A470 down the road to the Power Station. Grid ref: SH696383.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, .
Those not walking:
This is another walk that Ed has found. It is in a walk that is totally new to me, so I will enjoy exploring this area.
It is described as a fine 8 mile walk with spectacular views in places. The walk goes round the lake in a clockwise direction, heading South towards the village of Trawsfynnydd. It involves a small section of the A470, but doing the walk this way round gets the road section over quite early in to the walk. Thankfully it is also on a wide footpath. After this the route heads towards the lake and crosses what is described as a unique footbridge. The route on the West side of the lake no, looks as though it may be interesting in terms of path finding, whilst the section on the North side is described as going through as a swampy section, so this might be challenging too!
Replacement Walk.
The Sandstone Trail - Beeston and Peckforton.
Start: Pay and display car park at Beeston Castle. Grid ref: SJ540591. The Pay and Display machine only starts at 10-00.
Leave Chester at 09-30 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn,
Those not walking:
In the past we have done this walk,as part of a series of walks along the Sandstone trail. It involves Walk 6 and Walk 7 from Carl Rogers' book "Circular Walks on the Sandstone Trail". When done together it was about 10 miles, but last time we missed out part of the walk on the northern side of the canal that made the walk 8 miles.
We will probably do the same this time.

Wednesday 20th December 2023.
A Great Orme Walk in Search of Seals!
Distance: 8 miles. It can be easily be shorted or extended on the day to suit the needs of the group.
Climb: 500'-1000', depending on the route we take.
Start at Llandudno West shore. Roadside parking near the boating lake. Grid ref: SH771820.
Leave Chester at 08-40 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Nigel, Fran, Ed.
Those not walking: Mike, Sue and Michel.
We will probably start by heading up Marine Drive and taking the Monks' Path upto the plateau. Following the paths on the north west side of the Great Orme. After visiting the summit trig point we will probably head for Happy Valley for lunch. At lunch we can decide if we want to return to the West shore via the invalids' terrace or return to the summit and drop down the zig-zag steps.
This another opportunty to look for the Silver studded blue.
We will probably miss out the trig point, unless any of the group wishes to use the facilities at the summit.
Low tide is at about 10-45, s we should hve a good chance of seeing seals.
Saturday 23rd December 2023.
No walk planned.
Contact me if you decide you want a walk a walk to be arranged.
Wednesday 27th December 2023.
The Environs of Hawarden and Hawarden Park.

Heavy rain and strong winds forecast for most of the day

This is a walk suitable for getting the legs going if you haven't done much walking recently.
It is the same walk that we did in August, so most of the group will remember it.
Last time we exended the walk a little by going into the grounds of Hawarden Park.
Some of the paths can be quite muddy after rain.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, David S, Ed,
Those not walking: Mike,.
Saturday 30th December 2023.
Brickfield Pond Nature Reserve and Both Sides of the Afon Clwyd.
Postponed due to bad weather.
Distance: 8 -11 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start: Park at the Rhuddlan L.N.R. car park. Grid ref: SJ020776.
The car park is on the Western side of Rhuddlan. To get to the car park, from the A55, turn right on to the A525 (St. Asaph Road towards Rhyl and Rhuddlan), at the next roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Station Road (to Rhuddlan centre / Castle). The car park is on the right, opposite a new hotel. If you get to the bridge over the river you've gone too far!
Leave Chester at 09-00.
Those planning to walk: Martyn.
Those not walking: Mike. .
This walk is an annual favourite, at least for those that like to do as little birdwatching as well. It is a good time of the year as there are lots of Winter visitors that frequent coastal areas and river estuaries. Bring binoculars with you.  Last time we had lunch by the Marine Lake, near the Foryd.  We have also had lunch on the beach at the Foryd.
Although we haven't seen Snow buntings on the Foryd or a few years, with a bit of luck we may see them this year.
High tide at the Foryd is at about 12-45, .9 m / 29.2'.
This means we should get good views of Wintering visiters that come to this river / estuary , especially on the return along the west side of the river.
Last year we didn't do any of the extensions!  Extension, if any will  be taken at each appropriate point in the walk on the day.

Those not walking:  .
This walk is adapted from two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd".  We have completed this walk many times before in all sorts of weather conditions. Conditions underfoot have been particularly challenging after lots of rain and the Afon Clwyd is in spate.  In the past we have seen Kingfishers and Salmon jumping the weir, seeing either again would be nice.
The length of the walk depends on which way we decide to return to Rhuthin from Rhewl.
On one occasion we did see Salmon leaping at the weir on the Afon Clwyd. The salm run occurs October/November each year, hence the reason for putting the walk on this month.
Saturday 4th November 2023.
No planned walk as I am going birdwatching to Pennington Flash.
However Ed and Mike will organise a walk for today.
Contact them if you decide you want to join them.
Wednesday 8th November 2023.
Hilbre Island and More on request.
Distance: 4-5 miles. Climb: 100' at a guess!

Those planning to walk: Martyn,Nigel, Sue and Michel, Mike, Ed? .
Those not walking: Fran .
High Tide is at 07-28 and is 24.3 m / 7.4 m and Low Tide is at 14-10,  so it looks like being a good option today. We should be able to cross the sands following the tide as it goes out.
Bring binoculars, their should be plenty of Wintering birds to see and hopefully seals too.
Yesterday I saw a Great northern diver, Common scoter and Shag on West Kirby Marine Lake as well as 12 Goosanders.
If desired the walk is easily extended to include Grange Hill and Caldy Hill (see 2nd October 2021 walk).
Saturday 11th November 2023.

Abergele and Moelfre Isaf. This walk is by Debbie Hamelton and starts in the centre of Abergele, but we will start on the coast. This will extend the walk by about 2 miles. The main walk is described as exploring the beautiful North Wales countyside South of Abergele. The outward route passes a well preserved watch tower.

Moel Famau , Around Ffrith Mountain and Clwyd Forest.

This walk combines to routes from Dave Berry's Books, one from "Walks in the Clwydian Hills" and one from "Walks in the Clwydian Hills - New Edition." This is a walk that we first did in 2015, and every one said that they enjoyed it.  Hence its inclusion again this year. Perhaps at this time of the year we will reach the Jubile Tower on a warm wind free day with superb views in all directions!
Saturday 8th November 2023.
Traeth Lafan and Its Foothills.
Distance:7-8 miles. Climb:1000'.
Start: Abergwyngeryn Free Car Park Grid ref: SH0652728. Post code: LL33 0LF

Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Mike, Ed.
(Those not walking: )
This walk taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks On the North Wales Coast". The Traeth Lafan and it Foothills. This walk is an annual favourite and has in the past given us some wonderful experiences, especially in Winter trampling through soft fluffy knee deep snow, that didn't stick or wet our legs.  You never know we may get some  snow, this time too. It should be worthwhile bringing binoculars with you as we may visit The Spinnies Nature Reserve on the way back to our car.
This walk is described as walk of contrasting coastal and upland scenery with good views from the higher points on the North Wales path.
This time we will use the road to The Spinnies, and avoid the unpleasant smelly muddy experience of taking the path through the farm yard,
High Tide is at about 13-35  and is 8.7 m / 28.5', so hopefully we will arrive at The Spinnies at a time when we might have a better chance of seeing a Kingfisher.
Wednesday 22nd November 202023.
Deborah's Well, Moel Findeg and Big Covert
Distance:7-8 miles. Climb: 1300'.
Start: Lay-by on the  Cadole to the Pantymwyn road. Grid ref: SJ205627. after passing the former Rainbow Inn (now a building site), take the next road on the right just before the newsagent. The lay-by is almost immediately on the right by the telephone kiosk.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Mike, Ed, Sue and Michel, Nigel
(Those not walking: Fran)
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "More Walks in the Clwydian Hills".  This is another chance to visit the summit of Moel Findeg with its fine views of the Northern Clwydians  and across the Cheshire plain to Peckforton and Beeston.  Hopefully we will make it as far as the ancient Deborah's well this time. We may even do it first this time, if we park in the Cadole lay-by.
Saturday 25th November 2023.

Her walk starts from Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, but we will start at Pentre Celyn about half a mile beyond Graigfechan.

If you want more details of the walks, go to the Stamford Bridge country Inn web site.
It was suggested that some of the group might want to have a meal after the walk.

Start: Llandulas Beach Car Park. Grid ref: SH907786.
Leave Chester at 08-30.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book, "Walks on the North Wales Coast". It combines an interesting section of the coast line with the attractive limestone countryside between, Old Colwyn, Llysfaen and Llandulas. This is one of my favourite walks, but the walk today wil allow us to see how much work has been done on the sea defences from Old Colwyn to Colwyn Bay.

Around Bryn Alyn and Eryrys.
Distance: 8 miles. Climb: 1400'.

Start: Layby on the A494 Mold to Ruthin Road, about 1/2 mile South of Llanferres. Grid ref: SJ187597.
Leave Chester 09-00 a.m.

Those not walking: David S, Ed, Nigel, Fran.
This walk uses two walks from Dave Berry's book More Walks in the Clwydian Hill".  We have combined these walks on several occasions before and the section over Bryn Alyn is always good. It will also give us another opportunity to test our route finding skills through Nercwys Forest again! Admittedly the last couple of times we have had no problems in finding the right path, we've done it so many times over the years that at last the route seems to be etched in to our memories!
This good walk has its challenges and its delights too!
Saturday 16th September 2023.
Conwy Mountain and Around Maen Esgob and Craigfedwen
Distance: 8 miles. Climb:1447'.
Start: Long stay car park on the B5106 at Conwy. Pay and Display. Grid ref:SH781773. Post code: LL32 8LS
Leave Chester 08-30 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Mike
Those not walking: Ed
The walk starts by heading through the castle walls and on the North Wales Coastal Path along the harbour as far as the secondary school. The North Wales Path is the followed over Conwy Mountain through Castell Caer Seion and onto the Sychnant Pass.
The views from the Conwy Mountain Ridge can be superb, with the Great Orme in one direction and Tal y fan in the other, as well as good views towards Conwy castle and the Conwy Valley.
After crossing the Sychnant Pass Road, the North Wales Path is once more folowed. At the point where there is a definite fork, it is possible to make a short there and back extension to visit the site of a monument. Returning to the North Wales Path, it is then followed along the East side of Maen Esgob as far as the head of the Fairy Glen. A path heading eastward then takes us past Llyn y wrach.

Once the West side of Maen Esgob is reached, the main track is followed parallel to the stone wall towards Craigfedwen, where the footpath goes South of Waeny-fedwen and onto the minor road near Llechwedd. The route goes Northward on the road ad then takes the first path on the right which leads around Bryn-mawr to a minor access road. It is along this road that several large and/or interesting properties can be seen. at the T-junction, the route goes right and in a very short distance a broken kissing gate leads the way to a field path leading  to the Sychnant Pass Road at Mount Pleasant on the outskirts of Conwy. The Sychnant Pass Road  is then followed back to Conwy.
Wednesday 20th September 2023.
St Dyfnog's Well,Llwyn Wood, Coed Mawr and More .
Distance: 7.4 miles. Climb: 400'
Start: Roadside parking by the weir, West of Brookhouse Mill and Pottery. Take the A525 from Denbigh. Just before the Brookhouse Mill Tavern on the A525, at a signpost for "Pottery", turn right (West), go past the marked parking bays for the pottery  and park on the left side of the road by the weir. Grid ref: SJ069656.
Leave Chester at 10-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Sue and Michel, Nigel Mike, Fran, Ed.
Those not walking: Fran, .
These walk is taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd". One walk explores the attractive and varied countryside between Llanrhaeadr and Brookhouse and gives us the opportunity to see again the famous Tree of Jesse medieval stained glass window (1533) and Ann Parry's gravestone with its inscription"God kept His word".  The walk also includes two miles of riverside  alongside the Afon Ystrad and Afon Clwyd
There is a possible extension that is described as interesting and takes a "green"approach to a little known castle (Denbigh) in Wales.
However on the last two occasions we have decided not to do the extension, and had to be satisfied with good views of the castle from the south west.
Saturday 23rd September 2023.
No walk.
I have an appointment to have a flu jab at 09-32.
It would be possible to arrange a shorter afternoon walk if anyone was interested or a walk that started in Chester.
Wednesday 27th September 2023.
A Great Orme Walk in Search of Siver studded blues!
Postponed due to bad weather!
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Mike, Fran, Nigel, Ed .
Those not walking: Sue and Michel .
We will probably miss out the trig point, unless anyone in the group wishes to visit the trig point or wishes to use the facilities at the summit.

This is another walk taken from Terry Marsh's book "Fifty Classic Walks in Lancashire". He describes the walk as a generally easy walk on good tracks throughout, and is a trek through history. Weather permitting, we should get good views of the Darwen Moors.
The last time we did this walk was in November 2010, where if I remember correctly it was clear blue skies, but very cold.
It is possible that a variation on this route will be followed, if our local friends are able to join us.

Walks and Dates August 2023

Latest Information About Harris Hikers from 23rd March 2023.
After much discussion between group members, those present decided to follow DS’s suggestion that “Short walks with an option of a meal at a nearby venue” should take place on the fifth Wednesday in a month, and members of the group would take it in turns to plan the walk and venue.
There are only two such Wednesdays left in 2023.
 August 30th* and November 29th
*.
Suggestions for Wednesday Walks and Saturday Walks are always welcome.
Remember to let me know that you plan to walk so that it becomes easier to arrange car sharing. in addition it helps me to know how many route maps I need to bring and on special occasions how many pieces of fruit cake or treats will be needed.
Letting me know that you won't be walking is just as important otherwise I am left guessing as to how many maps to run off and invariably I end up printing too many!
Wednesday 2nd August 2023.
The Environs of Hawarden and Hawarden Park.
Distance: 4-5 miles. Climb: 440'.
Start: Tinkersdale Car Park, Hawarden. Grid ref: SJ315656.
At the fountain, take the A550 southward. The car park is on the left.
Leave Chester at 09-00.
This is a walk suggested by DS as a walk suitable for getting the legs going if you
haven't done much walking recently.
It is the same walk that we did twelve months ago, so most of the group will remember it.
Last time we exended the walk a little by going into the grounds of Hawarden Park.
Some of the paths can be quite muddy after rain.

This is another opportunity to use to use Ysceifiog Footpath 188, and support the  locals that have campaigned for years to get it recognised as a Right of Way.
This a shorter version of the walk I did with Nigel a few weeks ago.
Much of the walk is one we have done several times in the past, and starts by heading northward via Ysceifiog Lake towards Babell as far as Waen Isaf. after taking a path eastward  we will pick up a minor road southward towards Lixwm. Ysceifiog Footpath 188 is just West of Lixwm and goes past Tan-yr-onen and Llwyn-drain to Pen-ffynnon-ycyff.   Nannerch is our next objective where we pick up a track leading to Bryn Rug and a minor road past Ysceifiog Fisheries.
After carefully crossing the A541 we will return to Ysceifiog via Coed y Llan and Ysceifiog Church.
Saturday 12th August 2023.
Planned walk will be posted soon.

A Great Orme Walk in Search of Siver studded blues!
Postponed until September.

Start at Llandudno West shore. Roadside parking near the boating lake. Grid ref: SH771820.

New walk for 16th August 2023.
A Linear Walk from Corwen to Llidiat-y-Parc via Moel Fferna.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: A long lay-by 1/4 mile West of Llidiart-y-Parc: SJ118433.
Leave Chester at 09-00 (08-15) if we decide to use the bus to Corwen from Llidiart-y-Parc.
This is a linear walk, so we will need to have sufficient cars to leave at least one at the start, and take everyone to Corwen, the start of the walk. The easiest option is to take enough cars to be able to leave at least one car in the layby and have sufficient cars to transport everyone to Corwen.
It is possible to use public transport, but that would probably mean leaving Chester at about 08-15 to make sure that we didn't miss the 09-45 bus to Corwen.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's booklet " Walks Around the Berwyn Mountains and the Ceiriog Valley".
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Ed, Nigel, Fran .
Those not walking: Mike, David S., Sue and Michel, .
The walk is described as a wlk for experienced walkers only. It features the North Berwyn Way to Moel Fferna. After following the River Dee past Llangar Church to Cynwyd, the route climbs steadily up a wooded valley and through a forest before crossing moorland to the top of Moel Fferna. Some of the routes up Moel Fferna have not been to our liking, so it will be interesting to explore this new route. On a good day the views from Moel Fferna can be be superb.
The descent of Moel Ferna to Llidiat-y-Parc is the most direct route, and one that we are familiar with, having followed it many times.
Saturday 19th August 2023.
Around Minera Mountain.
Postponed due to the weather forecast of gale force winds.
Distance: 7-8 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Minera Lead Mine Centre Car park. grid ref: SJ276509.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn,
Those not walking: Mike
This walk is a modified walk initially taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Ruabon and Hope Mountain". The walk is described as being quite demanding, especially on the open access moorland. A walk for experienced walkers only.
We have done this walk several times now and haven't always found it easy finding the path from Ty Hir. This time we will miss out Ty Hir and the difficult boggy moorland part of the walk
Instead we will take the path on the west side of the large quarry that leads to the world's End to Minera Road.
After visiting the trig point on Esclusam Mountain, we will drop down onto the Fron Deg path over Minera Mountain.
At Fron Deg we will head norhward on a path that leads eventually to New Brighton and a path into the Minera Lead Mines Country Park.
Wednesday 23rd August 2023.
The Spinnies and the Penrhyn Castle Coastal Path
Distance: 6-7 miles. Climb: 500'.
Start: Large layby on the Tal-y-Bont to Bangor Road Grid ref: SH 6114 7104. This is east of the road that is signposted to The Spinnies Nature Reserve.
Leave Chester at 09-00.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Ed .
Those not walking: Mike, Sue and Michel, Fran, David S.
This walk will explore the recently opened Wales Coastal Path that goes through the grounds of Penrhyn Castle and the return route will probably be along the original coastal path route.
Bring binoculars with you a we will probable call in at the The Spinnies Nature Reserve to see if the Kingfishers are around.
High tide is around 14-30, but it is only about 8.1 m, o mos of the waders will probably be a good way off shore by the time we get there.
If you are a National Trust Member bring your Membership Card with you in case we decide to go into Penrhyn Castle.

This walk is taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd".  I have only done this walk once before starting from this car park and that was more than 10 years ago. It is described as being a varied walk through forest, quiet lanes, including one that was used on a pilgrims' route and an attractive riverside path.
Part of the route, particularly sections of the riverside path have in the past been rather boggy (Remembered from it being on walks starting from Melin-y-Wig). The section through the forest can be boggy too. The only other thing I remember about this walk is that the final section involves climbing out of the valley up to the car park - not the most ideal way to end a walk.  We may have to dip our boots in disinfectant as we go through th grounds of a chicken farm.
