Walks and Dates December 2025

I won't be planning any walks for Saturday this month.
However Saturday walks can be arranged on request.
See walk list below for possible walks.
Wednesday 3rd December 2025.
A short walk from Parkgate.
Distance: 4.5 miles. Climb: 127’
Start:
The Old Baths Car Park Parkgate.
SJ 2743 7875.
                                         or
Alternative car park would be the Wirral Way Car Park near Neston Cricket Club SJ 2835 7784.
Leave Chester at 10-00.
Those planning to walk: Martyn,  Nigel, Elaine.
Those not walking: .
The route leaves the car park via the link path to the Wirral Way, which is followed for 2.0 miles as far as Stanney Fields Park, where we will stop for lunch /refreshments.  After lunch, we sill retrace our steps along the Wirral Way and leave it on the path signposted to the Old Quay. The Coastal Path (north westward) is then taken back to Parkgate.
If necessary, there are several opportunities to shorten the walk.
High tide id at 09-11. It is quite big at 9.0 m (29.5’), so we may be competing for parking spaces with the birdwatchers.
If you have them, you may like to bring binoculars / monoculars with you.
This will is the third of our Harris Hikers short walks suitable for all Harris Hikers past and present.

Those not walking: .
This walk is based on a walk  from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Holywell and Halkyn Mountain".  The Cwm Conwy walk is one of my favourite walks in the Halkyn area at any time of the year. The extension continues the walk as far as the old cemetery at Halkyn, but any additional extension would need to include Halkyn Mountain itself - not to everyone taste!

Her walk starts from Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, but we will start at Pentre Celyn about half a mile beyond Graigfechan.
In the past, we shortened it to about 8 miles and 1300', so we may do the same today.
Possible Walks

List of Possible Saturday Walks.
Moel y Garneddd.
Distance: 7- 8 miles.
Climb: 1200'.
Start: Fronfeuno Snowdonia National Park Lakeside Car park Grid ref: SH917351.
Leave Chester 08-30 a.m.
Those planning to walk: .
Those not walking: .
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's booklet "Walks Around Y Bala and Penllyn". The walk explores the undulating countryside West of Bala. The route follows a a bridleway up to moorland, eventually crossing Moel y Garneddd at a height of 1170'. We can expect to see superb views as we cross the open moorland. The return route goes through attractive woodland. This is a walk for experienced walkers only and should not be attempted in poor visibility. Careful navigation is required.
Caer, Gai, Cwm Dyfrydwy with an extension over Garth Fawr.
Distance: 9.1 miles. Climb: 1100'.
Start: Roadside parking in Llanuwchllyn on B4403. Park opposite the PC and chapel. Grid ref: SH875302.
Leave Chester 08-30 a.m.
Those planning to walk: .
Those not walking: .
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's booklet "Walks Around Y Bala and Penllyn". One walk is described as a fascinating walk featuring a Roman fort and historic houses and the other explores both sides of the Dyfrdwy Valley. The optional extension explores the countryside South of Llanuwchllyn, climbing to open moorland around Garth Fawr at a height of 1079'. It returns along the Western side of the Afon Twrch (Cwm Cynllwyd).
Town Brook Hollow and Ragleth Hill.
Distance: 9 -10 miles; Climb:2400'.
Start: Church Stretton centre car park (Pay and display). Grid ref:SO454941.
Leave Chester 8-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: .
Those not walking: .
This walk combines two short walks taken from Ian R. Jones's booklet "20 Church Stretton Walks". Town Brook Hollow (Ashlet Hill) to the North of Church Stretton and Ragleth Hill is to the South.   The two walks effectively create a figure of eight walk around Church Stretton, making Church Stretton a good place to look for a lunch spot.
It isn't easy to translate the Town Brook Hollow R. Jones 's map to the OS map, so we  a more recent booklet "Walks in the Shropshire Hills"  by Steve Goodier, so we might use his description for the Town Brook Hollow walk.
The Ragleth Hill walk includes quite steep climbs and descents, so we will probably do that walk first.
The Ragleth ill walk is 5.4 miles with a 1137' of climb and the Town Brook Hollow walk is 3.8 miles with 1244' of climb.
I am happy to change the designated walks as long it is requested by the Monday and a suitable alternative walk suggested.
Please feel free to make suggests of walks that you would like to be included.
Please remember, I have a Prayer and Praise Meeting at Church on the first Wednesday of each month, so I will be looking for walks not too far away.
List of Possible Short Walks
Great Barrow and Plemstall
Distance: 5-6 miles. Climb: 280’.Start: Layby on Barrow Lane, Great Barrow. Grid ref: SJ46916846.
Leave Chester at 09-00.
Those planning to walk: .
This is one of the walks provided by the Stamford Bridge Country Inn.
This a low-level walk involving many field paths and quiet country lanes. Some of the field paths can be quite muddy after heavy rain.
The walk allows us to visit two villages, Great Barrow and Plemstall. At Plemstall we can visit St. Peter’s Church, Plemstall with its nearby St. Plegmund’s Well. At Great Barrow we can visit St. Bartholomew’s church.
Last time I did this walk was with Ed on a very hot day and I managed to lose my Leki! We also made the mistake of trying to complete all three of the Stamford Bridge walks in one go. We won't be doing that today!
The walk can easily be extended by an extra 2 miles and 50’ of climb.
A walk from Norton Priory.
I want to explore the area before suggesting this as a short Wednesday walk.
Distance: 3.1 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start: Norton Priory Grid ref: SJ 5484 8311. Sat Nav: Tudor Road, WA7 1SX.
This is a walk that Mike suggested, and is based on one he found in a  Woodlands Trust Leaflet.

Walks and Dates November 2025

I won't be planning any walks for Saturday this month.
However Saturday walks can be arranged on request.
Saturday 1st November 2025.

See walk list below for possible walks.
Wednesday 5th November 2025.
A Walk Around Erddig Country Park.
This will is the second of our  Harris Hikers short walks suitable for all Harris Hikers past and present.
Distance: 3-4 miles (3.6 miles using track on Memory Map).
Climb: 400’ (Using Memory Map.
Start: Car Park in Erddig Country Park (Near the House). Grid ref: SJ328481.
This a National Trust Car Park, so bring your NT Membership Card with you.
The latest National Trust Booklet advises DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR SAT NAV, instead follow the brown Erddig signs.
Erddig is situated 2 miles south of Wrexham. Take the A483 from Chester as far as Junction 3. Take the B5605 exit to Rhostllanerchrugog. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Wrexham Road / A5125. Follow the brown Erddig signs from the A5125 Wrexham - Rhostyllen road.
Leave Chester at 10-00. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Erddig Country Park.
Those planning to walk: Martyn (I will drive), Nigel, Elaine, Fran, Sue and Michel, Sue and Dave P  dog.
Those not walking: .
This walk uses part of the Erddig walk in Dave Berry’s Booklet “Walks Around Rhuabon Mountain, the Clywedog Valley and Hope Mountain”.
His walk starts from the Felin Puleston Car Park, but we will start at the main Erddig Car Park.
The route goes round the castle and follows the riverside path next to the Afon Clywedog, and through Lewis Wood. Our route will cross the Clywedog on a footbridge and returns through Bryn-y-cabanau Wood, and Big Wood before going back along a path on the north side of the house.
The OS Map of the ground doesn’t show the paths very clearly, but I am sure the route description will make it easy.
I am sure there will be plenty of opportunity to explore the grounds further or even visit the house.
Saturday 8th November 2025.

Wednesday 12th November 2025.
Coed Ceunant and the River Clwyd.
Distance: 8.3 miles. Climb: 680'.

Leave Chester at 09-00.
Those planning to walk: .
This walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks In the Vale of Clwyd" that we have done several times before, but not for some time In the past we have linked them with other walks that take the mileage to about 13 miles, more than most of us want these days. He describes the walk as  one exploring varied countryside, with excellent views and visits the charming ruins of a Medieval church using field paths and some delightful bridleways between Ruthin and Llanbeddr Dyffryn-Clwyd. It explores the attractive lower slopes of the Clwydian's, including a lovely wooded area.
Saturday 15th November 2025.

Wednesday 19th November 2025.
Foel Fenlli and Cwm Blaenant.
Distance: 6-7 miles.
Climb: 1524'
Start: Bwlch Penbarra car park (Pay and display - cash works better than cards).
Grid ref:SJ162606.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Nigel, Fran and Mike. .
Those not walking: .
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's booklet "Walks on the Clwydian Hills". It is described as an interesting walk, visiting an impressive iron-age hill-fort. Sections mender along the Offa's Dyke footpath as far as the Clwyd Gate. The return route will take us through little known Western fringes of the Clwydian Hills. It includes attractive woodland paths  and explores a delightful hidden valley. Most of the walk is along clear paths with excellent views throughout.
The walk is nominally shorter than usual, but the last few times we have missed out the suggested extensions and agreed it was better to leave out the extension altogether.    However if the group are keen to extend the walk, it will be easy to do so. This is a decision we can leave until we get back to the cars if need be. There are plenty of tracks through the forest at Moel Famau Country Park to create a loop of whatever length we want.
We have good and bad experience on this walk, hopefully the weather will be kind and it will be one we don't remember for excess rain and gale force winds!

Saturday 22nd November 2025.

Wednesday 26th November 2025.
Burton, Neston and Parkgate with a short Extension.
Distance: 8-10 miles. (With plenty of opportunities to shorten the walk on the day if we decide that is what we want). Climb:215'.
Start: Roadside parking on Denhall Lane next to benches overlooking the marshes. Grid ref: SJ301747.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Mike .
Those not walking: .
The Burton circuit is taken from Jen Darling's book "Walks in West Cheshire and the Wirral". The extension will involve some road walking through Neston to link up with the Wirral Way and onto Parkgate. The return route will use coastal paths as much as possible and passes Neston Old Quay and Denhall Quay on the way back to Denhall Lane.
High tide is about 14-27. 8.2 m / 27.0. Perhaps, we should do the walk in he opposite direction (clockwise) to the way that we normally do the walk.
If we do it that way, we might get it right going through Burton Wood!

The walk will start by heading down the lane opposite (Forest Gate Lae) the car park towards the Sandstone Trail, but at the end of the lane, we will take the woodland path past King's Chair that eventually links with the Sandstone Trail.
After crossing the Sandstone Trail we will take the path eastward, reaching a lane by the "Poo - tin" and then down the lane as far as the path to Eddisbury Castle. After visiting Eddisbury Castle we will descent to meet a track that leads past the masts on the way to to Pale Heights.
We will then head to the Delamere Forest Visitor Centre and into the forest taking the path on the west side of Blakemere Moss, We will take a path past Pinewood Fam, Kingswood Cottage, eventually joining the Eddisbury Way  as far as Manley Common (a possible lunch spot if we haven't found anywhere better before then).

Start: Lay-by on West side of Hen Cloud, opposite the track to Windygates. Grid ref: SK006618.
Leave Chester at 08-00.
Those planning to walk: Martyn and Mike.
Those not walking: .
Ramshaw Rocks, combined with The Roaches, makes a superb walk, worth repeating on an annual basis.
This walk allows us to explore Ramshaw Rocks seen so many times as we have walked over the Roaches. Ramshaw Rocks from a distance have always looked to be an interesting place in which to walk. This time Ramshaw Rocks will be our main objective with a North to South traverse of the Roaches a bonus towards the end of the walk. If time and legs permit, Hen Cloud may be included as an extension. The route heads North and then North west leading to Well Farm. From Well Farm field paths are used to reach the Churnet Way near Naychurch. The Churnet Way is followed North over Ramshaw Rocks and then leaves the Churnet Way and heads North to visit Black Brook Nature Reserve, After a complete circuit of the Reserve the route drops down to the road South of Newstone Farm. The road is then followed North for about a mile before heading west across Goldstich Moss in to the Black Brook Valley. After crossing the brook on a footbridge the path then rises to Roach End. At Roaches End the main path over the Roaches is followed past the trig point and Doxy Pool back to the start.
Boggy area guaranteed!

Please feel free to make suggests of walks that you would like to be included.

Distance: 7 miles. Climb: 1200'. (8.5 miles. Climb; 1300', if we do the there and back to Hendre).
Start: Car park area West of Cilcain. Grid ref: SJ170652.

To get to the car park take A541 Mold - Denbigh Road. After Hendre take the road signposted Cilcain. In the centre of Cilcain, at a crossroads turn right (West) and continue West past the church. After about 400 yards take the minor road left. The parking area is about 300 yards along this road, on the right after a few houses. In all about 700 yards from the crossroads in Cilcain.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's booklet More Walks on the Clwydian Range".
It is described as as a walk exploring the attractive varied countryside between Hendre and Cilcain.
We last did this walk around 2015, but then we included Moel Plas-yw and the distance was over 11 miles with a climb of over 2000'', too much for me!
The walk is shorter than usual, but I can't see an easy way to extend the walk without missing out large parts of the described route. We could do a there and back from point 2 on the route to Hendre and this would allow us to experience all of the walk as described.  This would add an extra 1.5 miles and 100' of climb

This walk is taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd".  I have only done this walk once before starting from this car park and that was more than 10 years ago. It is described as being a varied walk through forest, quiet lanes, including one that was used on a pilgrims' route and an attractive riverside path.
Part of the route, particularly sections of the riverside path have in the past been rather boggy (Remembered from it being on walks starting from Melin-y-Wig). The section through the forest can be boggy too. The only other thing I remember about this walk is that the final section involves climbing out of the valley up to the car park - not the most ideal way to end a walk.  We may have to dip our boots in disinfectant as we go through th grounds of a chicken farm.

This walk allows us to once again explore areas north and south of Moel-y-Parc. In 2024, we didn't find route finding very easy. Hopefully the next time we do thiswalk, we will do a little better!
The walk combines two walks in Dave Berry's new booklet "More Walks in the Clwydian Range (Third Edition)".
Please feel free to make suggests of walks that you would like to be included.
Please remember, I have a Prayer Meeting at Church on the first Wednesday of each month every, so I will be looking for walks not too far away.
