A Walk Around Erddig Country Park.
This will is the second of our  Harris Hikers short walks suitable for all Harris Hikers past and present.
Distance: 3-4 miles (3.6 miles using track on Memory Map).

The latest National Trust Booklet advises DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR SAT NAV, instead follow the brown Erddig signs.
Erddig is situated 2 miles south of Wrexham. Take the A483 from Chester as far as Junction 3. Take the B5605 exit to Rhostllanerchrugog. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Wrexham Road / A5125. Follow the brown Erddig signs from the A5125 Wrexham - Rhostyllen road.
Leave Chester at 10-00. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Erddig Country Park.
Those planning to walk: Martyn (I will drive), Nigel, Elaine, Fran, Sue and Michel, Sue and Dave P  dog.
Those not walking: .
This walk uses part of the Erddig walk in Dave Berry’s Booklet “Walks Around Rhuabon Mountain, the Clywedog Valley and Hope Mountain”.
His walk starts from the Felin Puleston Car Park, but we will start at the main Erddig Car Park.
The route goes round the castle and follows the riverside path next to the Afon Clywedog, and through Lewis Wood. Our route will cross the Clywedog on a footbridge and returns through Bryn-y-cabanau Wood, and Big Wood before going back along a path on the north side of the house.
The OS Map of the ground doesn’t show the paths very clearly, but I am sure the route description will make it easy.
I am sure there will be plenty of opportunity to explore the grounds further or even visit the house.

Those planning to walk: .
This walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks In the Vale of Clwyd" that we have done several times before, but not for some time In the past we have linked them with other walks that take the mileage to about 13 miles, more than most of us want these days. He describes the walk as  one exploring varied countryside, with excellent views and visits the charming ruins of a Medieval church using field paths and some delightful bridleways between Ruthin and Llanbeddr Dyffryn-Clwyd. It explores the attractive lower slopes of the Clwydian's, including a lovely wooded area.

Those planning to walk: Martyn, Nigel, Fran and Mike. .

This walk is taken from Dave Berry's booklet "Walks on the Clwydian Hills". It is described as an interesting walk, visiting an impressive iron-age hill-fort. Sections mender along the Offa's Dyke footpath as far as the Clwyd Gate. The return route will take us through little known Western fringes of the Clwydian Hills. It includes attractive woodland paths  and explores a delightful hidden valley. Most of the walk is along clear paths with excellent views throughout.
The walk is nominally shorter than usual, but the last few times we have missed out the suggested extensions and agreed it was better to leave out the extension altogether.    However if the group are keen to extend the walk, it will be easy to do so. This is a decision we can leave until we get back to the cars if need be. There are plenty of tracks through the forest at Moel Famau Country Park to create a loop of whatever length we want.
We have good and bad experience on this walk, hopefully the weather will be kind and it will be one we don't remember for excess rain and gale force winds!

Saturday 22nd November 2025.

Wednesday 26th November 2025.
Burton, Neston and Parkgate with a short Extension.
Distance: 8-10 miles. (With plenty of opportunities to shorten the walk on the day if we decide that is what we want). Climb:215'.
Start: Roadside parking on Denhall Lane next to benches overlooking the marshes. Grid ref: SJ301747.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Mike .
Those not walking: .
The Burton circuit is taken from Jen Darling's book "Walks in West Cheshire and the Wirral". The extension will involve some road walking through Neston to link up with the Wirral Way and onto Parkgate. The return route will use coastal paths as much as possible and passes Neston Old Quay and Denhall Quay on the way back to Denhall Lane.
High tide is about 14-27. 8.2 m / 27.0. Perhaps, we should do the walk in he opposite direction (clockwise) to the way that we normally do the walk.
If we do it that way, we might get it right going through Burton Wood!

List of Possible alternative Wednesday Walks
Great Barrow and Plemstall
Distance: 5-6 miles.
Climb: 280’.
Start: Layby on Barrow Lane, Great Barrow. Grid ref: SJ46916846.
Leave Chester at 09-00.
Those planning to walk: .
This is one of the walks provided by the Stamford Bridge Country Inn.
This a low-level walk involving many field paths and quiet country lanes. Some of the field paths can be quite muddy after heavy rain.
The walk allows us to visit two villages, Great Barrow and Plemstall. At Plemstall we can visit St. Peter’s Church, Plemstall with its nearby St. Plegmund’s Well. At Great Barrow we can visit St. Bartholomew’s church.
Last time I did this walk was with Ed on a very hot day and I managed to lose my Leki! We also made the mistake of trying to complete all three of the Stamford Bridge walks in one go. We won't be doing that today!
The walk can easily be extended by an extra 2 miles and 50’ of climb.

List of Possible Saturday Walks.

This walk is taken from Dave Berry's booklet "Walks Around Y Bala and Penllyn". The walk explores the undulating countryside West of Bala. The route follows a a bridleway up to moorland, eventually crossing Moel y Garneddd at a height of 1170'. We can expect to see superb views as we cross the open moorland. The return route goes through attractive woodland. This is a walk for experienced walkers only and should not be attempted in poor visibility. Careful navigation is required.

This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's booklet "Walks Around Y Bala and Penllyn". One walk is described as a fascinating walk featuring a Roman fort and historic houses and the other explores both sides of the Dyfrdwy Valley. The optional extension explores the countryside South of Llanuwchllyn, climbing to open moorland around Garth Fawr at a height of 1079'. It returns along the Western side of the Afon Twrch (Cwm Cynllwyd).
Town Brook Hollow and Ragleth Hill.
Distance: 9 -10 miles; Climb:2400'.
Start: Church Stretton centre car park (Pay and display). Grid ref:SO454941.
Leave Chester 8-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: .
Those not walking: .
This walk combines two short walks taken from Ian R. Jones's booklet "20 Church Stretton Walks". Town Brook Hollow (Ashlet Hill) to the North of Church Stretton and Ragleth Hill is to the South.   The two walks effectively create a figure of eight walk around Church Stretton, making Church Stretton a good place to look for a lunch spot.
It isn't easy to translate the Town Brook Hollow R. Jones 's map to the OS map, so we  a more recent booklet "Walks in the Shropshire Hills"  by Steve Goodier, so we might use his description for the Town Brook Hollow walk.
The Ragleth Hill walk includes quite steep climbs and descents, so we will probably do that walk first.
The Ragleth ill walk is 5.4 miles with a 1137' of climb and the Town Brook Hollow walk is 3.8 miles with 1244' of climb.
I am happy to change the designated walks as long it is requested by the Monday and a suitable alternative walk suggested.
Please feel free to make suggests of walks that you would like to be included.
Please remember, I have a Prayer Meeting at Church on the first Wednesday of each month every, so I will be looking for walks not too far away.
