Walk stats: 8.1 miles. Climb: 364’,
Time: 3 hours 54 minutes. On the move walking average: 2.7 m.p.h. Overall Walk average: 12.0 m.p.h.
Temperature: 7.2 – 7.8 Celsius.
Beaufort Wind Force: 3-4, mainly a Gentle breeze, but increasing to a Moderate breeze towards the end of the walk.
Group: Martyn, Nigel, Fran and Mike.
The forecast for today wasn’t very good – rain showers all day, but looking at the rain radar was much better, so we decided to risk going for a walk.
In fact, the only significant rain was at lunch time, and even then, we were able to shelter from the worst of it at the Central Station where there was a bench below projecting roof.
On the outward journey, we took the main tarmac covered path running on the eastern side of the Afon Clwyd.
The tide was still rising and was expected to reach High Tide at about 12-30, so was optimistic that it would push the birds into positions that would make them easier to spot.
To a certain extent it did, and we saw several huge flocks of Lapwings with their flickering flight.

As usual, we took in Brickfield Pool NR on our way to Rhyl.
Birds seen or heard today included: European robin, Blue tit, Great tit, Common blackbird, Common redshank, Little grebe, Oystercatcher, Great cormorant, Woodpigeon, Common coot, Moorhen, Mute swan, Shelduck, Tufted duck, Teal, Wigeon, Mallard, House sparrow, Dunnock, Goosander, Herring gull, Common gull, Black headed gull, Great black back gull, Eurasian curlew, Caada goose, Greylag goose, Lapwing and Little egret.
Our return route followed the path on the west side of the river, and thankfully today it wasn’t too muddy – my boots only took ten minutes to clean when I got home.
We arrived back at the car, having had an enjoyable walk, but there was no enthusiasm to extend the walk by going around the Rhuddlan Nature Reserve!
After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Blue Bell Inn at Halkyn, where the Lees bitter was everyone’s choice of beer. The Lees bitter, as usual was in excellent condition, demanding that I should have a second pint!
