Walk Stats:
Distance: 9.5 miles. Climb: 276’
Time: 4 hours 37 minutes. On the move walking average: 2.7 m.p.h.
Overall walk average: 2.0 m.p.h.
Temperature: 3.7 Celsius at the start. 7.1 Celsius at lunch in the Haddon Station Waiting Room. 5.2 Celasius mid-afternoon!
Beaufort Wind Force: Calm - too little to measure.
Group: Martyn, sue and Michel, Fran, Nige and Mike.
The weather early on was much better than expected when we were able to enjoy walking in the warm sunshine, but at the same time hoping the Sun’s rays wouldn’t defrost the frozen mud we were walking on. Later on we still had to take steps to try and avoid our boots getting too muddy!
Birds seen or heard today included: Jackdaw, Carrion crow, Raven, Common blackbird, Black billed magpie, Great tit, Blue tit, Bullfinch, European robin, Woodpigeon, Winter wren, Common gull, Herring gull, Black headed gull and Dunnock.
This walk wasn’t a walk that says” I must do this walk again”, but after Christmas excesses it it is an OK walk to get the legs working again.
The bonus today was being able to modify our walk route and have lunch back at Haddon Station where we had lunch in the Waiting Room and were able to use the facilities before setting off on our short extension along the old railway track to Hooton and back along the roads to the start. At the end everyone seemed happy to realise that they had just done nearly 10 miles, and others were even happier to head to Wheatsheaf at Raby and sample a pint or two at their real ale on offer!
