Walks and Dates March 2020

Do these gloves belong to you?
These gloves were left in David S's car quite some time ago, but so far all attempts to reunite them with their owner have failed.
If they are yours please contact me.

Wednesday 4th March 2020
Above Helsby and Frodsham.
Distance: 7-8 miles. Climb; 1000'.
Start: Helsby Quarry Woodland Car Park. Grid ref: SJ490750
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from the book "Pathfinder Guide to Cheshire". Much of it we have done before when following walks on the Sandstone Trail. However part of the walk around Helsby Hill is new to me and it is the first time that we have started from this car park. On a clear day, the views across the estuary is superb. The walk is described as being energetic. As the walk is a little shorter than usual, we may wish to explore the Woodhouse Hill fort a little more.
Saturday 7th March 2020.
Delamere Forest and Pale Heights.
Postponed - no takers.
Distance: 6 miles. Climb: 500'.
Start: The Yeld Car Park, Kelsall. Gri ref: SJ533692.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
The walk starts by heading East, goes through Nettleford Wood and then climbs to Pale Heights, where hopefully we will get good views in all directions.
After descending from Pale Heights, the walk explores Delamere Forest Park using paths on both sides of the Barns Bridge Road.
Harris Hikers Annual Meal.
If for any reason you can't make it, please let me know as soon as you can.
Similarly, if you now find that you can make it and wish to join us please let me know .
I will be contacting the Pant-yr-Ochain with final numbers on Monday 9th March.
Wednesday 11th March 2020.

(with an optional short walk).
Location: Pant-yr-Ochain, Gresford.
Grid Ref: SJ363553

I went to the Pant-yr-Ochain on 3rd February 2020 and have provisionally booked for 20.
I said we would be arriving between 12-30 to 13-00, ready to be seated at 13-00.
The meal has been booked under my name.
19 have said that they will be coming to the meal. However they did say the number could be adjusted, if I let them know on Monday 9th March 2020.
I will give the Pant yr Ochain final numbers on Monday 9th March 2020.
Route to the Pant yr Ochain.
Take the A483 from towards Wrexham from Chester.
Leave the A483 at the Gresford interchange (junction 6 I think), signposted A5156 (Nantwich). Take the first turn on the left  (Old Wrexham Road) signposted The Flash. The Pant yr Ochain is on the right after a few hundred yards.
The following have said they will be coming to the meal.
MartynSue and MichelCelia, Wendy and Ian, Nigel, David S and AnneJim and PaulineDeniseFran, Paul, Sue and Dave P .
(16 unless there are any last minute changes)
Walk: The Clywedog between Bersham and The Nant.
Distance: 4.3 miles Climb: 142 m /462’.
Start: Layby on Plas Buckley Road, Grid ref: SJ308491, near Bersham Bridge, East of Bersham Ironworks. At Junction 4 on the A483, turn left onto the A525 and follow brown signs marked Bersham and Clywedog Trail. Take the first turn on the right, the B5098 (Berse Road). At the T-junction turn right onto the B5099 and take the next right into Plas Buckley Road. The layby is immediately on the left after passing under the Bersham Road Bridge. There is a rubbish bin in the layby.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m. and meet at the start.
The walk starts by following a minor road fo about a mile, and then takes a path through woodland and fields to Plas Power Wood and onto Nant Mill. There are picnic benches to use, if we decide to start for refreshments. Probably better on the way back from The Nant where there is a ford to cross the Afon Clywedog. We will probably use the nearby footbridge. We will then follow the Clywedog Trail back to the start. The section Nant Mill takes us through the delightful ancient woodland called Big Wood. This was the walk that we did last year, so we may go round in the opposite direction just for a change.
Saturday 14th March 2020.
Let me know if you want me to organise a walk on this date.
Wednesday 18th March 2020.
Moel Famau, Moel Dywyll and Moel Llys-y-coed.
Postponed until the Government Changes its Social Contact Advice.
Distance: 8.5 miles. Climb: 1900'.
Start: Car park area West of Cilcain. Grid ref: SJ170652.
To get to the parking area, at the crossroads in Cilcain turn right (Westward), past the White Horse, Church and Village hall, at the end of a few houses on the right turn, left and the parking area is a few hundred yards further on on the right.
This walk includes three hills along Offa's Dyke Footpath - Moel Famau, Moel Dywyll and Moel Llys-y-coed. The latter hill is not one of my favourite hills in the Clwydian range and I can't remember when it last appeared on one of our walks. It is the ascent from North to South that I dislike so much, the fact that we will be descending from South to North shouldn't be quite so bad!
On a good clear day we should get excellent views in all directions.
The last time we did this walk, we missed a path and then encountered a farmer that accused us of missing the path sign and ending up in his farm yard.  This time we will take a different path and so avoid any chance of confrontation.
Saturday 21st March 2020.
A Walk Around the Great Orme.
Postponed until the Government Changes its Social Contact Advice.
Distance: 8-10 miles, but will be decided on the day.
Climb: 500'-1000', depending on the route we take.
Start at Llandudno West shore. Roadside parking near the boating lake. Grid ref: SH771820.
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
This walk is one we do several times each year, particularly if we want to avoid muddy conditions. The exact route wil be decided as we are going round. It will probably involve going around the Great Orme on the panoramic road, have lunch in the Happy Valley before taking the path across the limestone pavement and then taking the steps down to the invalids terrace and back to the shore.
Wednesday 25th March 2020.
Rhosesmor, Sychdyn and Northop.
Postponed until the Government Changes its Social Contact Advice.
Distance: 9.0 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Parking area next to playground, Rhosesmor. Grid ref: SJ214681.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk includes the "Northop - Sychdyn" walk from the booklet "Rural Walks in Flintshire". The "Northop - Sychdyn" walk starts from Northop and is only five miles. The car park in Northop is very small, and when I went on a reccy it was full. Starting at Rhosesmor overcomes that problem and extends the walk by four miles.
The "Northop - Sychdyn" walk is described as including a traveller's resting place, grand houses, parkland and woodland. It is also described as a moderate walk with many stiles and some boggy places.
The "Northop - Sychdyn" walk was new us when we did it for the first time last year.

The link-up paths from Rhosesmor include many of the paths that we have used on Gwystaney walks from the same parking area.
Saturday 28th March 2020.

Postponed until the Government Changes its Social Contact Advice.
