Group: Martyn, Mike and Ed.
We set off about 30 minutes earlier than usual, hoping to complete the climb to Tal y Fan by mid-day and before the temperature rose too much. The initial start of the walk as far as Maen Penddu was in sunshine, but it wasn't too hot and just as we started the final climb to the Tal y Fan ridge, it clouded over, a real blessing.
The route as far as Maen Penddu is straight forward, but the final climb to the Tal y Fan ridge not so, but today we probably took the right one.
The views today were good, ll in the distance it was quite hazy.
Mike arrived at the trig int on Tal y Fan just before 12-00, and the rest of us ten minutes or so later. The decision was taken by Mike and Ed that this was a good spot to have lunch, the Sun was back from behind the clouds, but a very pleasant breeze helped to keep us cool.
The descent from the trig point towards Foel Lwyd isn't particularly pleasant, and initially I had planned to wait for lunch until we had reached the stile at the col, but today I was overruled, so we had to suffer the descent after lunch rather than get it over with before lunch.
The descent to Rowen along the along the old green lane past the Youth Hostel always seems longer than it really is, and steep sections of the tarmac road really challenge our knees.
We arrived back at the car, having had a good walk, one of the few occasions to do so in fine weather conditions and in time to enjoy a pint or to of Lees bitter at the Ty Gwyn Hotel in Rowen. We stayed in the Ty Gwyn a little longer than we usual do after a walk, but a certain football match happened to be on, so we stayed to half time before setting off home.
Not many birds around today, but w did see a Red kite, Common buzzard, Raven, Meadow pipit, Stonechat, Carrion crow and Winter wren.
