This path through the old mine workings looks like it is used more by mountain bikers.

Distance: 8.4 miles. Climb: 633’
Time: 4 hours 28 minutes.
On the move walking average: 2.5 m.p.h.
Overall walk average: 1.9 m.p.h.
Temperature: 5.6. Celsius at the start. 5.6 Celsius on Holywell Common, 9.2 Celsius heading for Racecourse Lane, 7.8 at lunch at Pantasaph and 6.0 Celsius at the end.
Beaufort Wind Force: 0 – .2 Always a slight wind detected, but not measurable. Max 2, just making a 6.2 m.p.h. Light breeze as we approached Pen-y-Ball Top.
Group: Martyn, Nigel and Mike.
The weather was on the cool side to start, but warmed up when the Sun came out fully. Almost blue skies throughout the walk.
As usual sections of walk were quite muddy, especially the “road” heading from Brynford to Graeana. You could see why there was a “Road Closed“ sign at each end to warn off-road vehicles not to attempt to the track.
The Snowdrops on the roadside near Holywell Racecourse were pretty good (promising well for the Llantysilio Green walk next week.
We chose a higher path past the quarries to take us to Pen-y-Ball Top.
We came across a local landowner in the process of making a track from the quarries past Pen-y-Ball Top, but he still had a lot of work to do.
As we approached Pen-y-Ball Top we had a few spots of rain, and you could just about make out a rainbow over the Wirral.
The view across the estuary was pretty good, and I’m sure you could make out part of the King Charles III Way!
Birds seen or heard today: House sparrow, Dunnock, House sparrow, Black headed gull, Common gull, Herring gull, Goldfinch, Jackdaw, Common blackbird, Common starling, Carrion crow, Woodpigeon, Blue tit, Common chaffinch, European robin, Black billed magpie, Great tit, Grey heron and Common buzzard.
Overall a very enjoyable "Snowdrop" walk.
After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Britannia Inn at Halkyn, where the Lees Bitter was so good, two of us just had to have a second pint!
