When? Started: 1993 Who? Started with staff and friends from U H S, Chester. Organiser: Martyn Harris We walk every Wednesday and Saturdays, New Years day and May Day. How many walk? Walks take place as long as there are at least 2 wanting to walk on that day. More walk on a Wednesday than on a Saturday. Most ever: 29. Current group size walking: 2-7 in mid-week and 2-4 on Saturday. Where do we walk? Saturday: Anywhere in North and Mid-Wales, Peak District, Shropshire and the Long Mynd and as far North as the Trough of Bowland. Thursday: Anywhere within about 40 miles of Chester. Type of walk: Distance: 6 – 14 miles (but usually under 10 miles). Climb: up to 4000’ (but usually very much less!). Connah's Quay Nature and RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands Nature Reserves 9th November2024.

It's only 8 Celsius, but there is still plenty of insect activity onthe surface of Woodland Pool, The Mere, RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands Nature Reserve.
Distance: 3.0 miles. Climb: 100' at most.
Temperature 8 Celsius. Beaufort Wind Force: 0 -1. Light air at most. Still overcast with the Clwydians clothed in mist / low cloud, and Moel Famau not in view for over a week!
No Harris Hikers walk today, so it is another opportunity to do a bit of birdwatching locally.
I haven't been to Connah's Quay Nature Reserve for a long time, so this was my first port of call.
Birds seen or heard on the reserve included: Teal, Common pheasant, Greenfinch, Common chaffinch, Common blackbird, Carrion crow, Common redshank, Great spotted woodpecker, Blue tit, Great tit, Wigeon, Goldfinch, Pink footed goose, Mallard, Eurasian curlew, Common coot, Grey heron and Little grebe..
The second port of call was RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands Nature Reserve.
Birds seen or heard on this reserve included: Common blackbird, Common coot, Mallard, Moorhen, Teal, Common redshank, Ruff, Canada goose, Pink footed goose , Black tailed godwit, Shelduck, Shoveler, Pintail, Cetti warbler, Dunnock, Winter wren, Blue tit, Great tit, Jackdaw, Black billed magpie, Lapwing, Golden plover (bird of the day) , Common kestrel, Pink footed goose, European robin and Marsh Harrier.
As I was driving, after walk / birdwatching drink had to wait until I reached home.  On this occasion it was a glass of Merlot!
