Walks and Dates September 2024

Latest Information About Harris Hikers from 23rd March 2023.
After much discussion between group members, those present decided to follow DS’s suggestion that “Short walks with an. option of a meal at a nearby venue” should take place on the fifth Wednesday in a month, and members of the group would take it in turns to plan the walk and venue.
There is only one su
ch Wednesdays left in 2024.
This is  October 30th.
It was also agreed that Wednesday Walks should in the main be walks of around 8 miles with no more than about 1200’ of climb. If proposed walks exceed these suggestions routes should have obvious short cuts to reduce distance and / or climb involved.
It was also agreed that each month a different member of the group should plan the walk.
This walk should be for the Wednesday in the month and that would include the “Short Walk and Meal Option” on the fifth Wednesday.
In order to include that walk in the monthly “Dates and Walks Post", details of the walk need to be sent to me by 15th of the previous month.
Wherever possible I would like people to let me know of their intention to walk or not to walk by Monday afternoon/early evening prior to the walk on Wednesday. There isn’t an issue with last minute cancellations for any reason. This happens anyway when adverse weather is forecast at the last minute.
Where the “Short Walk and Meal” is concerned, the person planning the walk and meal should
be contacted directly and informed of their intentions as soon as you have made your decision.
I am always happy to receive suggestions for Wednesday, Saturday or the Short Walk on 30th October.

Those not walking:
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd". This walk                              is described as a fascinating walk that explores the wooded Ystrad Valley and visits historic houses associated with Dr Johnson and Beatrice Potter.
The walk nominally starts at Denbigh Castle, but we will  extend the walk a little by starting in a layby just outside Denbigh.
Replacement Walk.
Wednesday 4th September 2024.
Deborah's Well, Moel Findeg and Big Covert
Distance:7-8 miles. Climb: 1300'.
Start: Lay-by on the  Cadole to the Pantymwyn road. Grid ref: SJ205627. after passing the former Rainbow Inn (now a building site), take the next road on the right just before the newsagent. The lay-by is almost immediately on the right by the telephone kiosk.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Ed, Nigel (all being well).
Those not walking: Mike.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "More Walks in the Clwydian Hills".  This is another chance to visit the summit of Moel Findeg with its fine views of the Northern Clwydians and across the Cheshire plain to Peckforton and Beeston.  Hopefully we will make it as far as the ancient Deborah's well this time. We may even do it first this time, if we park in the Cadole lay-by.
Saturday 7th September 2024.
Caernarfon, St. Baglan's Church and the Welsh Highland Railway
Distance: 9-0 miles. Climb: 500 '.
Start: Caernafon Long Stay Car Park, Victoria Dock Car Park, Balaclava Road, Caernarfon. LL55 1TH.Grid ref: SH 4805 6328
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Ed
Those not walking: Mike.
This walk includes a walk by Dave Berry that visits St. Baglan's Church, a church dating back to Medieval times and now looked after by "The Friends of Friendless Churches".
Much of the walk is along minor roads, initially along the coast from Caernarfon and inland, eventually joining he Welsh Highland Railway at Dinas.
On a clear day you should get good distant views towards Eryri, Yr Eifl and across the Menai Straights to Anglesey.
In the Summer, there is a good chance of seeing one of trains from the Welsh Highland Railway as it takes tourists from Caernarfon to Portmadog.
Wednesday 11th September 2024.
Moel Famau, Moel Dywyll and Moel Llys-y-coed.
Postponed - too wet and windy.
Distance: 8.0 miles. Climb: 1700'.
Start: Car park area West of Cilcain. Grid ref: SJ170652.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: .
Those not walking: Mike, Martyn, Ed, Nigel. Sue and Michel.
To get to the parking area, at the crossroads in Cilcain turn right (Westward), past the White Horse, Church and Village hall, at the end of a few houses on the right turn, left and the parking area is a few hundred yards further on on the right.
This walk includes three hills along Offa's Dyke Footpath - Moel Famau, Moel Dywyll and Moel Llys-y-coed. The latter hill is not one of my favourite hills in the Clwydian range.  It is the ascent from North to South that I dislike so much, the fact that we will be descending from South to North - last time we did the walk in 2020, I think it was much better.
On a good clear day we should get excellent views in all directions.
The last time we did this walk, we missed a path and then encountered a farmer that accused us of missing the path sign and ending up in his farm yard.  This time we will take a different path and so avoid any chance of confrontation.
Saturday 14th September 2024.
St. Celynnin's Church and Tal y Fan.
Distance:7-8 miles. Climb: 2600'.
Start: Roadside parking in Rowen, on the right by houses just after passing the Post Office or  nearer the houses on the right
if there are spaces just before the right turning. Grid ref:SH761719.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Ed, Mike, Nigel.

This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Betws-y-coed and the Conwy Valley". This walk is described as exploring the scenic upland pastures, full of antiquity, featuring a remote ancient church, Maen Penddu (standing stone), a burial chamber and Cae Bach (hill fort). Visiting Cae Bach may involve a there and back extension! Although this walk is shorter than our usual walks, Dave Berry does suggest that we should allow at least 5 hours and is for experienced walkers only!

Wednesday 18th September 2024.
Ed's Last Wednesday Walk followed by a meal at Old Harkers.

I propose a 6 mile walk from Chester Bus Interchange going towards Eccleston via The Duke's Drive and back via the river if it is not likely to be too muddy.
(Meet at 09-30 at Bus Stand A)

Then lunch in Old Harkers.

Post meal drinks will also be had at Wetherspoon for those who wish.

Please let me know if you can make it so I can organise the meal booking.

Meal (for 6-8) Booked for 13-00
at Old Harkers.
It looks like the Upton members will catch the 09-38 51 bus from Upton into Chester.
 Thanks Ed
Distance:   5.5 miles or 6.6 miles (Depending on how far down The Duke's Drive we go).
Climb: 300'
Start: Meet at Chester Bus Interchange Stand A (Nearest to Cow Lane Bridge).
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Ed, Mike, Nigel, Sue and Michel.
Those going to the meal: Martyn, Ed, Mike, Nigel, Sue and Michel, Fran, maybe Celia, depending on family commitments.

This walk combines a walk from Carl Rogers's book "Circular Walks Along The Gritstone Trail" and part of a walk taken from the "Pathfinder Guide to Cheshire". This walk is the same walk we did in January 2023, when the weather was pretty poor. Hopefully this time we will get good views from the ridges.
Hopefully conditions underfoot will be better than we last experience when it was a Winter walk.
Wednesday 25th September 2024.
Foel Fenlli and Cwm Blaenant.
Distance: 6-7 miles.
Climb: 1524'
Start: Bwlch Penbarra car park (Pay and display - cash works better than cards).
Grid ref:SJ162606.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn, Nigel, Fran, Sue and Michel .
Those not walking: Mike.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's booklet "Walks on the Clwydian Hills". It is described as an interesting walk, visiting an impressive iron-age hill-fort. Sections mender along the Offa's Dyke footpath as far as the Clwyd Gate. The return route will take us through little known Western fringes of the Clwydian Hills. It includes attractive woodland paths  and explores a delightful hidden valley. Most of the walk is along clear paths with excellent views throughout.
The walk is nominally shorter than usual, but the last few times we have missed out the suggested extensions and agreed it was better to leave out the extension altogether.    However if the group are keen to extend the walk, it will be easy to do so. This is a decision we can leave until we get back to the cars if need be. There are plenty of tracks through the forest at Moel Famau Country Park to create a loop of whatever length we want.
Last time we did this walk, the weather was very windy and we had to improvise the walk to avoid heading directly into the gale force wind.  Hopefully not to be repeated this year.
Saturday 28th September 2024.
World's End and Gyrn-y-Brain from the Ponderosa.
Distance: 9 miles. Climb: 1600'.
Start: Car parking area opposite the Ponderosa Café. Grid ref: SJ192480.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
Those planning to walk: Martyn,
Those not walking: Ed.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book “Walks Around Ruabon Mountain, the Clywedog Valley and Hope Mountain." This is described as an exhilarating walk of great variety, on good upland paths and tracks with panoramic views.  Conditions underfoot can be boggy in places, but hopefully at this time of the year it won't be too bad,
