Walk and Dates June 2024

Latest Information About Harris Hikers from 23rd March 2023.

After much discussion between group members, those present decided to follow DS’s suggestion that “Short walks with an. option of a meal at a nearby venue” should take place on the fifth Wednesday in a month, and members of the group would take it in turns to plan the walk and venue.
There are three such Wednesdays left in 2024.
.These are:- July 31st, and  October 30th.
It was also agreed that Wednesday Walks should in the main be walks of around 8 miles with no more than about 1200’ of climb. If proposed walks exceed these suggestions routes should have obvious short cuts to reduce distance and / or climb involved.
It was also agreed that each month a different member of the group should plan the walk.
This walk should be for the Wednesday in the month and that would include the “Short Walk and Meal Option” on the fifth Wednesday.
In order to include that walk in the monthly “Dates and Walks Post", details of the walk need to be sent to me by 15th of the previous month.
Wherever possible I would like people to let me know of their intention to walk or not to walk by Monday afternoon/early evening prior to the walk on Wednesday. There isn’t an issue with last minute cancellations for any reason. This happens anyway when adverse weather is forecast at the last minute.
Where the “Short Walk and Meal” is concerned, the person planning the walk and meal should
be contacted directly and informed of their intentions as soon as you have made your decision.

This walk is based on a walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Hidden Heart Of North Wales" or "Walks Around the Hiraethrog Moors and Lakes". This is a low level walk and is a gentle stroll around the lake. Hopefully the Osprey has returned to one of the nesting platform in the lake, although a goose had taken over the usual platform after it had been restored after vandals had cut the post down. Hopefully we will see one on the new nesting platform or even fishing in the reservoir. Bring your binoculars if you have them.

This must be one of the best walks in the Llangollen area, especially on a sunny day. This is a walk that makes you feel like you’re on top of the world with superb views in all directions, including the Dee Valley, Dinas Bran, the Llantysilio Mountains and the Berwyns. This is one of my favourite walks and is always on the list at least once every year.
We usually do this walk in mid-week, so it will be a change to do it on a Saturday but hopefully everyone else will be staying at home to watch the coronation!
At this time of the year, we could still hear and see Cuckoos.
Cuckoo reportedly arrived in the valley at the beginning of May.

This has become a regular walk at any time of the year, but at this time of the year. When we did this walk last year we did see see Seals around Porth Dyniewaid, so hopefully they will be there this year as well.  The views from the top of the Little Orme are always superb. This is always an enjoyable walk whatever time we do it.
As the Bluebells are on the way out, orchids are starting to show, and thee often good displays of orchids on the limestone slopes north west of St., David's College.

This is another walk that has become an annual favourite. Along the coastal section there should be  good chances of seeing Choughs, Guillemots, Razorbills and even Puffins. Bring binoculars if you can. If time and energy reserves allow we may visit the summit of Holyhead Mountain.
As we start at the Country park, we will again do the walk in a clockwise direction,  finishing the  walk along the Coastal Path.

This walk is a modified walk initially taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Ruabon and Hope Mountain". The walk is described as being quite demanding, especially on the open access moorland. A walk for experienced walkers only.
We have done this walk several times now and haven't always found it easy finding the path from Ty Hir. This time we will miss out the difficult boggy moorland part of the walk
We will follow the described route to Ty Hir Farm, but afterwards we will take the path that heads south and eastward past Park Farm to the World's End Road., cross the road and head for the trig point on Esclusham Mountain. We will then continue southward to join the Fron Deg Path.
At Fron Deg we will head norhward on a path that leads eventually to New Brighton and a path into the Minera Lead Mines Country Park.

Those planning to walk: Martyn,  .
Those not walking:
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks on the Denbigh Moors" or his slightly newer book "Hidden Heart of North Wales". The walk explores the expansive  tract of moorland and upland pastures around  Llyn Aled and  Aled Isaf. The route in part follows tracks not easily seen and is for experienced walkers only.  At one point the walk follows a delightful upland path via Llys Dymper, before returning South over the moorland top of Foel Lwyd. The extension allows us to explore moorland paths over Moel Bengam and Cefn Du along paths that I have wanted to explore for some time. Has been known to be boggy, but hopefully not too boggy at this time of the year. As an extra challenge we may complete this walk in an anticlockwise direction, the opposite way to the way we normally complete the walk!
The last time we did this walk in June 2017 when we shortened the walk to 8.5 miles and a climb of 842'.
Wednesday 26th June2024.

I know this is shorter than our usual walks, but this gives me an opportunity to recce the walk before doing with a group from church.  It also a another possible "Harris Hikers Short Walk and Meal".
Most of the walk follows the walk provided by the Dinorben Arms. There description of the route can be found on their web site.  There walk is only 3 miles, so I have extended the walk to include part pf the Clwydian Way towards Craig Tremeirchion and rejoining the Offa's Dyke Path through Sodom.
