Group: Martyn, Nigel, Mike, Ed and Winston.
It was good that Winston, Mike's friend from Skipton was able to join us today.
The weather forecast today was not good with the Met office suggesting mist or fog for most of the day and a feel like temperature of only 5 Celsius. They were pretty accurate, although it didn’t feel quite as cold as they forecast. Views were non-existent until after lunch when the mist lifted the more, we descended to Pendle Side.
We were quite surprised to see quite a lot of people around the Beacon / Big End, including a few families with very young children.
With plenty of mist still around we decided to delay lunch until we had dropped below it, and on the side of the hill that was sheltered from the wind.
As we crossed Great Goppy we briefly saw a deer, probably a Roe deer.
Throughout the walk we were serenaded by Skylarks that seemed to be unphased by the mist.
We arrived back at the cars, having had a good and enjoyable walk despite the mist and lack of Dotterels!
Birds seen or heard today: Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Black billed magpie, European robin, Common blackbird, Blue tit, Common chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Willow warbler, Winter wren, Great tit, Collared dove, European robin, Chiffchaff, Woodpigeon, Goldfinch, Common pheasant, Eurasian curlew, Blackcap, Rook, Skylark, Lapwing and Meadow pipit. In addition, our Merlin app identified a Garden warbler.
All that was needed now was to head to the Calf’s Head at Worston for a celebratory drink and meal. Everyone enjoyed their meals and congratulated Mike on finding such a good restaurant to stop for a meal. The beers on offer were from Moorhouse’s Brewery and the Black Sheep Brewery and beers from both were sampled.
