Updated 20th April 2015.
The start pouint car park for the walk on the 23rd has been changed.
Thursday 2nd April 2015.
Beyond the Ro and Moel Ferna
Distance: 9-10 mile. Climb:1500'.
Start: Lay-by next to The Butterfly Man and Craft Centre on the A5. Grid ref: SJ115436.
Leave Chester 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines one of the walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley" with an extension to the summit of Moel Ferna (weather permitting). We will decide the return route on the day. We have visited Moel Ferna in all sorts of conditions, some good, some not so good, hopefully it will be a good one this time.
Saturday 4th April 2015.
No walk.
Thursday 9th April 2015.
Wat's Dyke, Brynford, St., Bueno's Well and St., Winifride's Well and More.
Distance: 8-10 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Halkyn Street Car Park, Holywell. Grid ref: SJ18957548.
Leave Chester at 09-30 a.m.
This is another figure of eight walk made by combining two walks and maybe three walks from Ron Williams and Elfed Jones's booklet "10 walks Around Holywell".
One walk explores the countryside between Holywell and Brynford. The other walks around the Greenfield Valley, will hopefully lead us to find the location of St., Bueno's Well .
Saturday 11th April 2015.
Moel Findeg, Deborah's Well, Bryn Alyn and Nercwys Mountain (A Tale of Two Mountains).
Distance:11 miles. Climb: 1800'.
Start: Lay-by opposite the Loggerheads Boundary Monument on the A494 Mold to Ruthin road. Grid ref: SJ202626.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "More Walks in the Clwydian Hills".  This is another chance to visit the summit of Moel Findeg with its fine views of the Northern Clwydians  and across the Cheshire plain to Pekforton and Beeston.  Hopefully we will make it as far as the ancient Deborah's well this time.
Thursday 16th April 2015.
Moel y Gaer, Moel Fammau and the Western Fringes.
Distance:10 miles. Climb: 2000'.
Start: Car park at Bwlch Penbarras. Pay and display (£1 the last time we were there). Grid ref: SJ162606.
Leave Chester 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks on the Clwydian Hills". An opportunity to explore the Western slopes of Moel Fammau before climbing its summit.  The return route uses the main path of Offa's Dyke back to Bwlch Penbarras.  An easy start, a stiff climb in the middle and a stroll back to the car.  Plenty of opportunity for good views in all directions, if it is clear when we get to the Jubilee Tower.
Saturday 18th April 2015.
Around Bosley Cloud.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb:1100'.
Start: Lay-by on the A523, South of its junction with the A54. Grid ref: SJ917657.
Leave Chester at 08-30.
This walk is taken from Jen Darling's book "Best Pub Walks in Cheshire", although we won't take her advice on the local hostelries! The walk takes us to the top of Bosley Cloud with its panoramic views over the Cheshire plain.. After visiting the trig point on Bosley Cloud, the walk heads West to meet up with the Macclesfield Canal, which we follow for an easy four mile stretch.
Thursday 23rd April 2015.
Moel Plas-Yw, the Alyn Valley and Coed Ddu.
Distance:11 miles. Climb: 2000'.
Start: Car park area West of Cilcain. Grid ref: SJ170652.
To get to the car park take A541Mold - Denbigh Road. After Hendre take the road signposted Cilcain. In the centre of Cilcain, at a crossroads turn right (West) and continue West past the church. After about 400 yards take the minor road left. The parking area is about 300 yards along this road, on the right after a few houses. In all about 700 yards from the crossroads in Cilcain.
I have changed the start of the walk to avoid having to use the very narrow road that goes on the South side of Moel Arthur, a road that I don't like!
Leave Chester 9-00a.m.
This walk combines another two walks from Dave Berry's book "More Walks from the Clwydian Hills". The first walk that crosses the slopes of Plas-Yw to the Wheeler Valley is one of my favourite walks in this area.  He describes the second walk as a walk that meanders through the attractive and varied countryside between Hendre and Cilcain.
Saturday 25th April 2015.
Llyn Geirionydd, and the Llanrwst to Trefriw River Walk.
Distance:9 miles. Climb:1100’.
Start: Plas yn Dre Car park, Llanwrst. Grid ref:SH796618.
Leave Chester 8-00 a.m.
This walk combine two walks from Dave Berry’s book “ Walks Around Betws-y-coed and the Conwy Valley”.  The walk begins with a pleasant walk along the Afon Conwy to Trefriw, before heading up to Llyn Geirionydd.  The valleys around Geirionydd are known haunts for Cuckoos, so hopefully we might hear one or as in the past been lucky enough to see one.
Although we did this walk last month, it was such a good walk that I tought that I would put it on again. Hopefully we may hear a Cuckoo this time.
Thursday 30th April 2015.
Lady Bagot's Drive with St Christopher's Blessing.
Distance:10-11 miles. Climb: 500'.
Start: Ruthin Riverside Car park (Pay and display). Grid ref: SJ121582.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd".  We have completed this walk many times before in all sorts of weather conditions. Conditions underfoot have been particularly challenging after lots of rain and the Afon Clwyd is in spate.  Hopefully we will see Kingfishers and can confirm Richard and Michel's sightings from earlier years.

Walks and Dates December 2015

Updated on 21st December 2015.
Walks planned for the Thursday 17th December and Saturday 19th December 2015 have been changed again!
A short Walk for Friday 1st January 2016 has also been added.
Thursday 3rd December 2015.
Ysceifiog-Lixwm-Nannerch.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 1300'.
Start: Ysceifiog, park adjacent to the children's play area. Grid ref: SJ152715.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Holywell and Halkyn Mountains".  This is another chance to explore the area around Ysceifiog using field paths, woodland paths and bridleways.  The walk also explores the countryside between the Wheeler Valley and Lixwm.  We have done this walk many times, but not for quite a while.
Saturday 5th December 2015.
Postponed.
Rhos-on-Sea, Bryn Euryn and Coed Pwllcrochan.
Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 1800'.
Start: Roadside parking on Marine Drive in Rhos-on-Sea, near to St., Trillo's Church. Grid ref: SH841811. It may may be better to park in Trillo Avenue, opposite the church.
Leave Chester at 08-30.
This walk combines three walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Llandudno and Prestatyn".
One is described as a varied walk exploring the hinterland behind Rhos-on-Sea and includes the hillfort in Bryn Euryn Nature Reserve. The other walk offers panoramic views as it meanders through the undulating countryside bordering on Mochdre, Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea. I rather suspect that suitable shortcuts will be made to ensure that the distance will be nearer 10.
Thursday 10th December 2015.
St. Dyfnog's Well, Llwyn Wood, Denbigh Castle and Goblin Fields.
Postponed - this route is notorious for flooding and mud, so I've decided to change the walk. See below for details.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 900'.
Start: Riverside parking near the weir in Brookhouse. Turn westward opposite the Brookhouse Inn, signposted "Pottery". Grid ref: SJ06896567.
These two walks are taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd".  The main walk explore the attractive and varied countryside between Llanrhaeadr and Brookhouse.  The highlight on the walk is the Jesse window in the medieval church at Llanrhaeadre.  The second walk takes us on a "green" approach to Denbigh Castle.
Thursday 10th December 2015.
New Walk.
Holywell, and the Mostyn to Greenfield Coastal Path Round.
Distance: 10.0 miles Climb: 1000'.
Start: Holywell Halkyn Street Car Park. Grid ref: SJ18957548.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
Although the route is largely based on one we did in June this year, it has been adapted to avoid problems encountered then as well as to try and minimise boggy and muddy fields that we have to negotiate. Consequently this is a somewhat contrived route in that it is uses mainly country lanes from Holywell towards Whitford and down to Mostyn. The route along the Coastal path to Grenfield is quite pleasant, but being on the estuary it can feel a little breezy at times. Some field paths are included, particularly at the start of the walk, so we can expect to encounter a few mud challenges on this section. Once we get to Mertyn Lane it should be plain sailing!
On the 11th of June we had lunch in the grounds of the Aberkan where we were able to use picnic tables and take advantage of the facilities.
However should we feel adventurous on the day, there are many that could be used instead of the security of having a hard surface under our feet.
Saturday 12th December 2015.
Caer Drewyn, Pen-y-Pigyn and onto Cynwyd.
Postponed.
Distance: 9 miles; Climb:1000'.
Start: Corwen centre car park next to the Public Convenience. Grid Ref: SJ080435.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley" with a there and back extension to Cynwyd. The visit of Caer Drewyn is described as enchanting and the second walk as being a delightful walk through the wooded hillside above Corwen and concludes with lovely walk alongside the River Dee.
Thursday 17th December 2015.
A Walk on Halkyn Mountain from the Blue Bell Inn.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Common ground opposite the Blue Bell Inn, Halkyn. Grid ref: SJ209702.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This is a walk devised by Steve at the Blue Bell Inn, Halkyn. It covers much of our regular walk that we do called "Halkyn Mountain, Limestone and Lead". However this route takes us in a clock-wise direction and around Moel-y-Gaer before heading to Rhes-y-cae. It also takes us  around the North of the Pen-y-Henblas quarry - we usually only see the quarry from its Southern side. We might see if we can enter the quarry on the North side and emerge on the East side for a change.
Saturday 19th December 2015.
A Walk Around the Great Orme.
Distance: 8-10 miles, but will be decided on the day.
Climb: 500'-1000', depending on the route we take.
Start at Llandudno West shore. Roadside parking near the boating lake. Grid ref: SH771820.
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
This walk is one we do several times each year, particularly if we want to avoid muddy conditions. The exact route wil be decided as we are going round. It will probably involve going around the Great Orme on the panoramic road, have lunch in the Happy Valley before taking the path across the limestone pavement and then taking the steps down to the invalids terrace and back to the shore.
Thursday 24th December 2015.
No walk unless anyone wants to escape from Christmas Preparations!
Contact me if you fancy a walk.
Saturday 26th December 2015.
No walk.
Friday 1st January 2016.
A West Kirby Round.
Distance: 5-6 miles. Climb: 500'.
Start: The Parade, West Kirby. Park near the old baths / opposite the IRB station. Grid ref: SJ213860.
Leave Chester at 09-30.
The walk starts by going around the Marine Lake, if the tide permits. High tide is at 15-21. It is quite a small tide, 7.7 m /25.0', so there should be no problem around the Marine Lake or walking along the beach to Red Rocks. Red Rocks may be a suitable spot for refreshments before heading through
Hoylake Golf Course to the Gilroy Nature Reserve. Finally a short climb up Grange Hill with its
impressive War Memorial with superb views in all directions. The return is via the Beacon on
Column Road and down to West Kirby through Ashton Park.
Bring binocular with you if you have them.
Fruit cake will be provided, as long as I know that you are coming!
Harris Hikers Annual Meal
Thursday 4th February 2016.
This would appear to be the best date for most of the group. I'm thinking of going to the Boathouse in Parkgate but at the moment I haven't booked anything. I intend to go down on the 4th February, so if you plan to come to the meal, it would be helpful if you let me know, so that I have a rough idea of the numbers involved.
If you know of anyone that might be interested in joining us for the meal, please pass on the details.
I will try to keep everyone up to date by e-mail as much as I can as well as putting the details on the blog.

Walks and Dates November 2015.

Please note change of walk for Thursday 26th November.
Thursday 5th November 2015.
Marion Frith, Moel Hiraddug, Cwm and Coed Yr Esgob.
Distance:10.4 miles; Climb:1600'.
Start:Car Park at the Eastern edge of Dyserth on the A5151. The car park is on the right just after a factory, and as the road climbs into Dyserth. If you get to the traffic lights/crossroads, you have gone too far. Grid ref:SJ062792.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
It's over a year since we last did these two walks together. Both walks are taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks on the Clwydain Hills - New revised edition". He describes the first walk as delightful and the second one as providing a fascinating exploration of the low hills North of Dyserth.
Saturday 7th November 2015.
No walk.
Thursday 12th November 2015.
Gloddaeth Hall and Bryn Pydew.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: Marl Hall Wood Car Park on the outskirts of Llandudno. Grid ref: SH 799787.
Directions to get to the car park. Leave the A55 at Junction 19 and follow the A470 towards Llandudno. At a roundabout turn right signposted to Esgryn / Pydew. Go past Esgryn Road to find a small car park on the right.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Llandudno".  These walks explore the area around St. David's College that we normally visit on our Little Orme walks.  In addition, we will take a short there and back extension to visit the obelisk that we see clearly as we travel along the A55.
Saturday 14th November 2015.
Around Moel Plas-yw.
In search of lost property!
Distance: 9.3 miles; Climb:1250'.
Leave Chester at 9-00 a.m.
Another two walks from Dave Berry's book ""More Walks on the Clwydian Hills". The Moel Plas-yw walk impressed us last time with its excellent views and delightful woodland valley paths. A visit to the summit of Moel Arthur could be an extension at the end of the walk for some! It is more likely that we will take a few short cuts to reduce the overall mileage a little and climb too!
We last did this walk on 3rd September 2015, but it will only be a repeat for me! The walk originally planned for today was around Llyn Brenig, and we did that last month, so I thought I would use this as an opportunity to se if my flask was still where I left it. If it is, I'm not expecting the soup to still be hot! It's a good job a bought myself a new flask.
Thursday 19th November 2015.
Sandbach and More.
Distance: 9 miles. Climb: 500'.
Start: Car park on Alsager Road, Hasall Green. Grid ref: SJ77555825.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
Although the described walk starts in the centre of Sandbach, this is a figure of eight walk around the village of Hassall Green.
The main part of the walk is taken from the Patherfinder Guide to Cheshire. Whilst part of the walk includes the centre of Sandbach, most of the walk visits more secluded areas just outside the town. It is described as including peaceful sections, including two secluded valleys and a section of the Trent and Mersey Canal.
The extension takes us East along th Trent and Mersey Canal as far as Thurlwood, before heading for Lawton Heath End and returning to the car park along the Salt Line.
This is a new walk for the Thursday group. As it is only 45 minutes from Chester to Sandbach, I thought it would be within distance for a Thursday.
Saturday 21st November 2015.
Clywedog Reservoir and More.
Distance: 9+ miles; Climb:1700' at a guess.
Start: Roadside parking in Cyffyliog. Grid ref:SJ060579.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book Walks in the Hidden Heart of North Wales". It is one that we have done several times before. The exact length will depend on the route we choose to take on the return route from the reservoir.
Thursday 26th November 2015.
New walk - Llanarmon-yn-Ial, Eryrys and Moel Gyw.
Distance:10 miles; Climb:1800'.
Start:Pistyll Gwyn Quarry car park. 1 mile north of Llanarmon-yn-Ial. Grid ref: SJ189574.
Leave Chester at 9-00 a.m.
This walk uses two walks taken from Carl Roger's book "Walking in the Clwydian Hills". We have completed both walks before, but have never tried to link them together before. The Eryrys walk is described as exploring the lesser-known limestone hills separated from the main Clwydian ridge by the Alyn Valley. Views throughout the walk are superb! The second walk involves the ascent of Moel Gyw which also has superb views of the Clwydian Hills to both the north and the south.
We last did this walk in January 2009.
Saturday 28th November 2015.
Melin-y-Wig and Derwen.
Distance: 8 miles. Climb: 1000' at a guess.
Start: Boncyn Foel-bach Forest Car Park Grid ref: SJ055520. This is on the B5105 Ruthin to Clawdd Newydd road.
Leave Chester at 08-45.
This walk is taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd".  I have only done this walk once before starting from this car park and that was more than 10 years ago. It is described as being a varied walk through forest, quiet lanes, including one that was used on a pilgrims' route and an attractive riverside path.
Part of the route, particularly sections of the riverside path have in the past been rather boggy (Remembered from it being on walks starting from Melin-y-Wig). The section through the forest can be boggy too. The only other thing I remember about this walk is that the final section involves climbing out of the valley upto the car park - not the most ideal way to end a walk.

Walks and Dates October 2015

After several of the group suggesting that I should should allow adverts on the blog, I have decide to allow adverts to appear. Hopefully it will generate enough income to cover the cost of putting all the photos on the blog. If the ads become annoying, let me know and I will stop them. This is only a trial period to see how it goes.
Thursday 1st October 2015.
Llanfair Talhaiarn, Moel Unben and Mynydd Dir.
Distance 10-11 miles; Climb:2000'.
Start: Riverside car park in Llanfair Talhaiarn. Grid ref:SH927702.
Leave Chester at 9-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walking in the Vale of Clwyd and the Denbigh Moors". This is a walk that we really enjoyed in the past, hence its inclusion on the list again. It is nominally only a 5 mile walk, but the extension doubles it. However the last time we did the walk, the route to Mynydd Dir was closed at the footbridge over the Afon Elwy, so our walk was shorter than expected. We may of course decide to do the same even if the footbridge is again open.
Saturday 3rd October 2015.
Haigh Country Park and Wigan Pier.
Distance:9-10 miles. Climb: 350'.
Start: Haigh Hall and Country Park, School Lane, Haigh,Wigan, Lancashire. WN2 1PE Grid ref: SD559086. Car park is Pay and Display, but not as much as the £6 Mike paid at the Wigan car Park in 2011! On the their web page it said £1-50 all day.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
This walk is taken from Terry Marsh's book "Fifty Classic Walks in Lancashire", with an extension to explore the Haigh Country Park and beyond. Haigh Country Park was one of the first to be named as a Country Park. The walk will probably start along the towpath of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal where we can start the return using the walk description which starts from Wigan Pier.   This should be an easy walk, without too many challenges, but I don't think we will be extending the walk as much as we did last time, 13.7 miles is a little outside my comfort zone these days!
Thursday 8th October 2015.
An Ancient Packhorse Trail Around Caergwrle.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 700'.
Start: Caergwrle Village Car Park on High Street. Grid ref: SJ305574
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from R.J.A. Dutton's book "Hidden Highways of North Wales". This walk heads East via Bryn-y-Gaer, Shordley Hall, Town Ditch, Honkley Farm and eventually reaches the Golden Grove Inn. The return route is is via Burton Lane, Rackery Farm, Rackery Hall and Gwasted Farm. The walk includes drovers roads and a corpse road.
Saturday 10th October 2015.
Around Llangernyw.
Distance: 8-9 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: Llangernyw, Near PC, down the lane by the church. Grid ref: SH876674.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
This is a figure of eight walk around Llangernyw. part of the walk is based on a walk from Lorna Jenner's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd and in the Denbigh Moors". It is described as being a delightful walk centred on the pretty village of Llangernyw. It includes terraced woodland paths besides a cascading stream through former pleasure gardens of Hafodunos Hall. The extension to the walk, explores the countryside North of the village and follows a section of the Afon Elwy, passes the remains of  a motte and then  explores the area North west of the village on the way back to Llanefydd.
The last time we did this walk, the weather was horrendous, with torrential rain for most of the afternoon. Hopefully it will be a little kinder this time.
Thursday 15th October 2015.
Llansannan and Mynydd Tryfan.
Distance: 8-10 miles; Climb:1500'.
Start:Car park behind PC opposite the Post Office in Llansannan. Grid ref:SH933658.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk is mainly a walk taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walking in the Vale of Clwyd". This is a varied walk along the Afon Aled and its tributaries, through rolling pastures edge with thick hedges and pockets of woodland, with a backdrop of mountains. However we will include an extension to include Mynydd Tryfan. The last time we did this walk we had a little difficulty finding some of the paths, must do better this time!
Saturday 17th October 2015.
Moel Plas-yw, the Alyn Valley and Coed Ddu.
In search of lost property!
This walk will probably be completed on the first Saturday when there are two members of the Saturday regulars wanting to walk.
Distance:11 miles; Climb:2000+'.
 Thursday 22nd October 2015.
Penycloddiau and Moel Arthur.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: Llangwyfan Forestry car park: SJ138668
Leave Chester 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Clwydian Hills".  This area of the Clwydians has so much to offer, and Moel Arthur and Penycloddiau are particularly good.  On a good day the views from both hill forts are superb, especially if it is a clear frosty day.
Saturday 24th October 2015.
Clywedeg Reservoir and Moel y Fron.
Postponed.
Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb:1600'.
Start: On the road parking in Cyffylliog. Grid ref: SJ060578. But meet at the riverside car park at Ruthin. Grid ref: SJ 121582. Car parking is very limited in Cyffyliog, so I've switched this walk from a Thursday walk to a Saturday walk as I can't remember when we last took more than one car on a Saturday.
Leave Chester.9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Hiraethog Moors and Lakes". This has always proved to be an enjoyable walk in the past and features attractive wooded river valleys, open hills, forests, upland reservoirs and excellent views on a good day.
Thursday 29th October 2015.
St. Cwyfan's Trail and More.
Distance: 9-10 miles. The main part of the walk is taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Clwydian Hills
Start: Roadside parking in Llandyrnog on the Llangynhafal road (Gladstone Terrace) . Park on the wider part of the road after Nant Glyd. Grid ref: SJ109650.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
The main part of the walk is taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd" and the extension explores the area South west pf Llandyrnog.
It main walk is described as a delightful walk in the countryside North of Llandyrnog and visits the smallest church in the Vale of Clwyd.
The extension follows part of the Clwydian Way alongside the Afon Clwyd South of iys confluence with Afon Clywedog.
Saturday 31st October 2015.
Clip-y-Orsedd, The Druid Circle and Foel Lus.
Postponed - see note on November walks.
Distance:11 miles. Climb:2400'.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
Start: Car park behind the bank in Llanfairfechan. Turn right of Village Road. Grid ref:SH682747.

This walk uses two walks Dave Berry's book "Walks on the North Wales Coast." These two walks combine to make one of my favourite walks in this area as they explore the hills behind Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr and usually appears on the list at least once a year. Hopefully we will visit the impressive Druids' Stone Circle and contour around the superb high level Panoramic Walk round Foel Lus. The last time we did this walk it was very windy and we decided not to do the Panoramic Walk round Foel Lus. We may do the same this time, even if the weather is good!

Walks and Dates September 2015

N.B.Thursday 10th September 2015.
I can't walk this Thursday, so I have switched it to Wednesday.
I hope a few of the group can still make it.

Thursday 3rd September 2015.
Moel Plas-yw, the Alyn Valley and Coed Ddu.
Distance:11 miles; Climb:2000+'.
Start: Car park area West of Cilcain. Grid ref: SJ170652.
The start location for this walk has been moved from the foot of Moel Arthur to this layby just outside Cilcain.
Leave Chester at 9-00 a.m.
Saturday 5th September 2015.
The Three Lakes Walk.
Distance:11.6 miles; Climb:1523'.
Start: Park on grass verge just before crossing over the dam (Eastern side of the Llyn Aled). Grid ref:SH916579.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's books "Walks in the Hidden Heart of North Wales" and Walks Around Hiraethog Moors and Lakes" whichever you prefer. Same walks, just different covers, and one walk has been extended a little in the former book. Llyn Aled, Llyn Alwen and the Alwen Reservoir are the three "lakes" visited. In the past sections have been quite boggy to say the least, but hopefully it won't be too bad at this time of the year.  This walk is not everyone's cup of tea, but over the years, it has become one of my favourite walks on the Denbigh Moors.
Wednesday 9th September 2015.
The Trent and Mersey Canal, Great Budworth and More.
Start: Marbury Country Park car Park (Pay and Display £2-50 last time). Grid ref: SJ652763.
Distance: 7-10 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
The main 7 mile walk is taken from the "Pathfinders Guide to Cheshire". This is described as a varied walk with plenty of historic interest, including the Anderton Boat Lift.. The extra mileage will be made by exploring the Anderton Nature Park, Marshall's Wood, Carey Park, Ashton's Flash and Neumann's Flash.  Bring binoculars with you if you can.
Thursday 10th September 2015.
No walk - see above.
Saturday 12 September 2015.
Winter Hill, Rivington Pike and Lever Park.
Postponed until Summer 2016.
Local souces informed me that Winter Hill had received a lot of rain over the last week or so, and that very boggy conditions would be a certainty, so with that in mind I have decided to postpone it until next Summer when there may be a chance that we won't get wet feet!
Distance: 9 miles. Climb:1035',
Start: Lever Park, Rivington Lane Car Park (Near Go Ape) : Grid ref: SD628138
Leave Chester at 8-00 a.m.
This is another walk taken from Terry Marsh's book "Fifty Classic Walks in Lancashire". He describes the walk as a generally easy walk on good tracks throughout, and is a trek through history. My experience of this area reminds me it can be boggy, but at least at this time of the year we have a chance that it won't be! I was obviously too optimistic!
New Walk.
A Tale of Two Quarries and the Foothills of Moel Morfydd.
Distance:10-11 miles; Climb:2800'.
Start: Opposite Capel Hebron, Rhewl. Grid ref:SJ182449.
Leave Chester 8-10 a.m.
Two walks taken from Dave Berry's book ""Walks Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley." The two quarries walk is described as an exhilarating walk exploring the foothills and attractive South facing side valleys of the Llantysilio mountain range.
The second walk is described as a walk that explores the beautiful Dee Valley and includes passing around the head of an attractive side valley beneath Moel Morfydd, offering superb views of the Dee Valley and beyond. In all probability a few short cuts will be made to ensure that our legs don't get too tired!
Thursday 17th September 2015.
Great Warford, Lindow Common and the Carrs.
Distance:10 miles; Climb:500'.
Start: Twinnies Bridge, Wilmslow. Grid ref:SJ839823.
This walk is based on a walk from Graham Beech'e book "Walks in east Cheshire", but as is often the case we are starting at a different place than that in the walk description. The link parts of the walk we have done many times on our walks in the Wilmslow area. He claims that the Great Warford walk involves little used paths, hopefully they won't be too overgrown.
Saturday 19th September 2015.
Long Mynd, Wild Moor and Pole Bank.
Distance:10-11 miles. Climb:2100’.
Start: Centre of Church Stretton car park (Pay and display). Grid ref: SO454930.
Leave Chester 8-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from Ian R. Jones’s booklet “20 Church Stretton Walks”.  All of the walks around Church Stretton are popular, although this walk does include a few sections that are a little less visited by the throngs.  Another possible Dotterel day, but if we do see any, it will be our first on the Long Mynd.  Even without Dotterels this is a superb area of the country to walk in, especially as you explore the moors around Pole Bank.
Thursday 24th September 2015.
Ty Mawr Country Park and Croes yr Esgob.
Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb:1500'.
Start:Trevor basin Car Park. Grid ref: SJ27224228
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk includes a walk from Jim Grindles's book "Circular Walks in North East Wales". This is the first time that we have included this walk and takes us along the river valley. The second part of the walk is one from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley".  We have already completed this walk once this year, but it is the obvious walk to link with the Ty Mawr walk.  The walk could involve crossing the aqueduct once, twice or not all!
Saturday 26th September 2015.
Meini Hirion and More
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 500'.
Start: Coastal car park near Wylfa Power Station. Grid ref: SH356938.
Leave Chester 08-00.
This walk involves two walks from Robert Harris's book "Walks in Ancient Wales". Much of the walk is along quiet lanes, but we will uses field paths and part of the Coastal Path to link the two walks. The walk goes South down an access road to Tregele, down a minor road to link with the path to some standing stones to meet up with the second walk. From Llanfechell we will take the path North around Pen y Bryn and on to Cemaes and return along the Coastal Path. Bring binoculars with you.

Walks and Dates August 2015

As many of the Saturday walkers have holidays in August, I have decided not to post suggested walks for each Saturday.
However if you are home and decide you would like to walk on a particular Saturday, please contact and a suitable walk could be arranged.
Thursday 6th August 2015.
Prestatyn to Talacre and Back.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start at Barkby Beach Car Park, park near the PC. Grid ref: SJ068839.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This is a walk that is always on the list at least twice a year. Hopefully we will see some Little terns, so bring binoculars with you. We will complete the walk by heading for Talacre through the Golf course and Caravan Park, and then through the Nature Reserve. We will have lunch on the path that leads towards Point of Ayr, where there ae a few picnic tables, hopefully not occupied when we arrive! The return route will be along the coast, paying a visit to the Gronant Little tern view point.  High tide at about 16-15  (38.4' / 8.7 m.)., not too high, so we shouldn't have any problems doing the walk this way round.
Thursday 13th August 2015.
Another Encounter with Moel Fferna.
Distance:8+ miles; Climb:2000'.
Start: Layby on A5 just East of Glyndyfrdwy next to the Butterfly Man Craft Centre. Grid ref:SJ115436.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This is a route that we first did in June 2010. The walk is taken from John Tranter's book "Walks in and Around the Berwyn Mountains". The approach is along the Nant y Pandy path, but then goes through the remains of the Deeside Quarry and Moel Fferna Quarry before heading off to the summit of Moel Fferna. Route finding may be a challenge! Apparently Ring Ouzels nest in the quarry, hopefully we may be lucky enough to see one. Hopefully the weather will be kind too!
Thursday 20th August 2015.
Fron Hen and Bryn Alyn.
Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 1800'.
Start: Layby on the A494 Mold to Ruthin Road, about 1/2 mile South of Llanferres. Grid ref: SJ187597.
Leave Chester 09-00 a.m.
This walk uses two walks from Dave Berry's book More Walks in the Clwydian Hill".  We have combined these walks on several occasions before and the section over Bryn Alyn is always good. It will also give us another opportunity to test our route finding skills through Nercwys Forest again! Admittedly the last couple of times we have had no problems in finding the right path, we've done it so many times over the tears that at last the route seems to be etched in to our memories!
This good walk has its challenges and its delights too!
Thursday 27th August 2015.
Llanefydd, Mynydd y Gaer and Moelfre Isaf.
Distance: 9-10 miles;Climb: 1700'.
Start: Car park by the village hall in Llanefydd, opposite the Buck Inn. Grid ref:SH982706.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walking in the Vale of Clwyd and the Denbigh Moors", and is a walk that we really enjoyed the first time that we did it. This is a refreshing walk over Moel y Gaer, the site of an Iron Age hill fort. Again we will extend the walk to include Moelfre Isaf. Last done in October 2013.

Walks and Dates July 2015

Thursday 2nd July 2015.
Eglwyseg Escarpment and Trevor Rocks.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb:1200'.
Start: Off road parking on the Panorama road just East of the monument. Grid ref: SJ247426.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This must be one of the best walks in the Llangollen area, especially on a sunny day. This a walk that makes you feel like you're  on top of the world with superb views in all directions, including the Dee Valley, Dinas Bran, the Llantysilio Mountains and the Berwyns. Always a favourite walk and on the list at least once every year. Good whatever the time of the year.
With the completion of the the A55/A483 Posthouse Junction promised for the last weekend in June, I decided to celebrate the event with this superb walk, I only hope that I'm not being too optimistic.
If I find that its completion has been delayed yet again, I'll probably switch the walk with one that avoids needing to use that section of the road to get to the start.
 Saturday 4th July 2015.
Craig Bron-Banog and Part of Cwm Alwen.
Distance:11 miles; Climb:1100'.
Start: Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Riverside picnic site. Grid ref:SH987496. Take the Ruthin to Cerrigydrudion road. Turn right just after the bridge by the Crown Inn. Continue down the road past the church. The picnic area is on the right just before the school.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
Both walks are taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks In the Hidden Heart North Wales". The Craig Bron-Banog walk is new to us. He describes it as an eight mile figure of eight walk exploring the afforested undulating countryside South-east of Llyn Brenig. The route meanders through Clocaenog Forest, passes a hidden waterfall and an ancient standing stone before reaching the highest point of Craig Bron-Banog with its panoramic views.
Thursday 9th July 2015.
Around Gwystaney and More.
Distance: 6.0 miles, 8.5 miles or 9.5 miles or 10.5 miles (decided on the day, as and when we have to make a decision!).
Climb: 1500', but depends on the actual route we decide to take after lunch!
Start. Parking area near the children's play ground in Rhosesmore. Grid ref: SJ214684.
The walk uses two walks from Dave Berry's book " Walks Around Holywell Mountain and Halkyn Mountain. Our usual route normally includes Cwm Conwy, but I suspect that today's walk won't! The Gwystaney walk is described as a walk through the undulating countryside between Rhosesmor and Sychdyn, exploring the lush wooded Gwysaney Estate. The second walk at least includes visiting Moel Y Gaer hill-fort and how much more depends on us!.
Saturday 11th July 2015.
Mynydd Marian.
Distance: 7-8 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Llandulas Beach Car Park. Grid ref: SH907786.
Leave Chester at 08-30.
This walk is one that we often usually do on a Thursday. I will probably look to see if there is a convenient extension that can take the walk to about 10 miles.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book, "Walks on the North Wales Coast". It combines an interesting section of the coat line with the attractive limestone countryside between, Old Colwyn, Llysfaen and Llandulas.
Thursday 16th July 2015.
Around the Old Horseshoe Pass, the Eglywseg Rocks and Glen.
Distance:10.3 miles; Climb: 2205'.
Start: Car park opposite the Ponderosa Cafe on the Horseshoe Pass. Grid ref:SJ193481.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walking Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley". These are two delightful walks, especially when the weather is good. An easy start heading down hill, a superb middle section with a challenging climb up the old Horseshoe Pass road at the end!
Saturday 18th July 2015.
Mynydd Eilian and Point Lynas and More.
Distance: 7-10 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Llaneilian Car Park. Grid ref: SH474929.
Leave Chester at 08-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Best Walks in North Wales". The walk visits one of Anglesey's high points, and follows a section of the Coastal Path. A good section of the coastal path is on concessionary paths that are closed on some days. I've e-mailed Anglesey Council, but as yet they haven't goback to me.  I'm sure that we can use our map reading expertese to get round any path that is closed! Walking along the coast is always good at any time of the year, especially if you get good weather'. Let's hope we will get good weather on this occasion.
The difference in mileage depends on how much of an extension we add on to the planned walk.
Thursday 23rd July 2015.
Cyrn-y-Brain and Coed Llandegla.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: Car parking area opposite the Ponderosa Cafe. Grid ref: SJ192480.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book " Walks Around Ruabon Mountain, the Clywedog Valley  and Hope Mountain." He describes it as a walk exploring open access moorland with panoramic views and contrasting forest paths.
Saturday 25th July 2015.
Yr Wyddfa - Snowdon.
Distance: 7-8 miles. Climb: 2700'.
Start Rhyd Ddu Station Car Park (Pay and Display). SH571525.
Leave Chester at 08-00.
This is the usual walk from Rhydd Ddu. Ascent via the quarries at Bwlch Cwm Llan  and the steady climb up the South ridge nd Bwlch Maen and descent via the Rhyd Ddu path. I always like to climb Snowdon at least once a year, and the Bwlch Maen ascent is one of my favourite routes.
We may have to change the route at the last minute, if we find  the car park at Rhyd Ddu is full when we get there.
It is a while since we climbed Snowdon, so I hope the weather is kind to us.
Thursday 30th July 2015.
Moel Famau - Twice!
Distance: 9 miles. Climb: 1800'.
Start: Moel Famau Forest Car park (pay on entry. £1 last time we used this car park), just East of the PC block.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines to routes from Dave Berry's Books, one from "Walks in the Clwydian Hills" and one from "Walks in the Clwydian Hills - New Edition." This is a walk that we first did in January a couple of years ago, and every one said that they enjoyed it.  Hence its inclusion again this year. Perhaps at this time of the year we will reach the Jubile Tower on a warm wind free day with superb views in all directions!

Walks and Dates May 2015

Saturday 2nd May 2015.
Pendle Hill – another Search for Dotterel
Distance:7-8 miles. Climb:1400’.
Start: Downham Village Car park. Grid ref: SD785442.
Leave Chester:8-30 a.m.
This is an extra walk for this week, so is a little shorter than usual.  It revives the May Day walk that we used to take before a certain government decided they didn't want to celebrate a day for the workers! The route today is the one in Terry Marsh’s book “Fifty Classic Walks in Lancashire”. He describes it as “undoubtedly the finest ascent of Pendle Hill”. Let’s hope for a good day weather-wise, topped up with good views of Dotterel as we did a couple of years ago.  Don’t forget to bring binoculars.
Thursday 7th May 2014.
Coed Pen-y-Gelli and the Gorsedd Round.
The First Bluebell Wood Walk of the Year.
Distance:11-12 miles. Climb:1050’.
Start: Roadside parking at Lloc. Turn left by the public house if approaching from Holywell on the A5026 on right if approaching on the A5026 from its nearest junction with the A55. Grid ref:SJ145765.
This is a annual Bluebell Wood Walk, and is effectively a figure of eight walk based on Lloc. This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry’s book “ Walks Around Holywell and Halkyn Mountain”.  The walk will probably nearer 10 miles as we will only complete a small section of the Gorsedd Round.
Leave Chester at 09-00a.m.
Saturday 9th May 2015.
Bluebell Woods Around Parbold.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 800'.
Start: Hunter's Hill Quarry Nature Reserve. Grid ref: SD503123
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
This walk is a walk that we did for the first time last year. This walk is on the East of Parbold, and visits up to ten different woods, so hopefully some will still have Bluebells on show.  The walk also includes part of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal as far as Appley Bridge. This walk is one that a friend from WEF did last year, but there is no description, just the OS map, so our map reading will have to be up to scratch and hopefully we won't have an unplanned extension of about 4 miles as we  did 2 years ago!  The walk includes a section around Anderton Mill and High Moor. Bring binoculars with you just in case.
Thursday 14th May 2015.
Pen-y- Ball Hill, Two Woods and the Coast.
Distance: 8-9 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Holywell Halkyn Street Car Park. Grid ref: SJ18957548.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This is a figure of eight walk around Holywell. It combines two walks from Ron Williams and Elfed Jones's booklet "10 Walks Around Holywell". We know the area around the Pen-y-Ball Monument quite well, but on this occasion, we explore again some of the paths around the Pets Cemetry. The other walk takes us down to the coast through Coed Pen-y-Maes, going quite near to the new Holywell High School. When we did the walk in May 2015 they had only just started to build.
Saturday 16th May 2015.
Around Holy Island.
Distance:12-13 miles. Climb:1326'.
Start: Roadside parking opposite PC by the Old Harbour in Holyhead. Just before the turning to South Stack. SH245831.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
This is another walk that has become an annual favourite. Much of the walk is along the Coastal path, but we will probably make a detour to visit the summit of Holyhead Mountain. A good chance of seeing Choughs, Guillemots, Razorbills and even Puffins. Bring binoculars if you can.
As in recent years, we will probably do the route in reverse of that described, and get the section through Holyhead centre over first and have the final section along the Coastal Path.
Thursday 21st May 2015.
Poncysyllte, Croes yr Esgob and Trevor Hall.
Distance: 11 miles. Climb:1560.
Start: Trevor Basin car park on the North side of Poncysyllte Aquaduct.
SJ272423.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book " Walks Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley".  This has become one of our regular walks and is good at any time of the year.  On a clear day the views across the Dee valley to Trevor Rocks and the Eglywseg escarpments are quite stunning.
Saturday 23rd May 2015.
Stanage Edge from Hathersage.
Distance: 11-12 miles; Climb:1800'.
This is a walk first completed by the group in September 2006 and repeated again in October 2007. If the walk is completed as described in Mark Richards' book "Walks in the High Peaks" it will take us about 7 - 8 hours (the time it has taken us in the past). This is a wonderful walk and if the weather is true Summer weather, the 7-8 hours shouldn't be a problem.
Start: Hathersage car park: Grid ref: SK231814.
Leave Chester 8-00 a.m.
Thursday 28th May 2015.
Around the Ystrad Valley and Foxhalls.
Distance:12-13 miles. ( Although we usually take a few short cuts and reduce the distance to about 10 miles). Climb:1350'.
Start: Layby on Denbigh - Pentrefoelas road, A543, just after the road bend left on the edge of the town. Grid ref: SJ043659.
Leave Chester 9-0 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd".  One walk explores the gently undulating countryside between Denbigh and Henlan, and the other walk visits historic houses  associated with Dr Johnson and Beatrice Potter.
Saturday 30th May 2015.
Mow Cop, Congleton Edge and More.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: Mow Cop National Trust Car Park (Members only, bring your membership card or car park badge). Grid ref: SJ856573.
Leave Chester at 08-00 a.m.
This walk combines a walk from Carl Rogers's book "Circular Walks Along The Gritstone Trail" and part of a walk taken from the "Pathfinder Guide to Cheshire". This walk is a little shorter than the one that w did in 2008. Good views from the ridges.

Walks and Dates March 2015

Updated on 18 March 2015.
Thursday 5th March 2015.
A Walk on Halkyn Mountain from the Blue Bell Inn.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Common ground opposite the Blue Bell in, Halkyn.
It also takes us  around the North of the Pen-y-Henblas quarry . The Saturday group did this walk for the first time on 23rd January 2015.
Saturday 7th March 2015.
The Llugwy and Lledre Valley.
Distance: 8-9 miles; Climb: 1000'.
Start: Railway station car park in the centre of Betws-y Coed. Grid ref: SH795565.
Leave Chester at 8-30 a.m.
This is another walk taken from Dave Berry's new book "Walks Around Betws-y-Coed and the Conwy Valley". This walk links the beautiful wooded Llugwy and Lledre Valleys. It takes in Sarn Helen, the former Roman Road, and reaches over 800' before descending in to the Lledre Valley. It involves a steep climb to Llyn Elsi or at least that is what Dave Berry says!
Thursday 12th March 2015.
Around the Little Orme and More.
I have brought this walk foreward as the seals and pups were on the beach at Porth Dyniewaid on the 28th February 2015, so hopefully they will still be there.
Distance: 8-10 miles. Climb: 700'.
Start: Roadside parking next to Paddling Pool and PC on Coast Road at Craig y Don, East side of Llandudno.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This has become a regular walk at any time of the year, but at this time of the year there is a good chance that we many see Seals around Porth Dyniewaid. The views from the top of the Little Orme are always superb.
We have a choice of walks, we can either go inland (8 miles) after visiting the quarry and Porth Dyniewaid or we can carry on along the coast as far as Rhos-on-Sea (10 miles). The latter is a there and back, although some of the route is along the beach, tide permitting.
We will decide which of the two routes on the day.
Saturday 14th March 2015.
Tegg's Nose and Macclesfield Forest.
 Distance: 9 miles. Climb: 1865'.
Start: Tegg's Nose Country Park Car park. Pay and Display. Grid ref: SJ950732.
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
This walk is taken from the "Pathfinders Guide to Cheshire". It is described as a varied walk with good views from Tegg's Nose. We will visit Tegg's Nose first, rather than at the end of the walk. The walk is also described as an undulating walk exploring the countryside on the edge of the Peak District.
Thursday 19th March 2015.
Grange, Pantasaph and Llwyn Ifor.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb 1000'.
Start: Holywell, Halkyn Street Car Park. Grid ref: SJ18957548.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This is another figure of eight walks from Ron Williams and Elfed Jones's book " 10 Walks Around Holywell".
Again the walks take us along many paths that we know well, but there are a few new ones for us to explore too. Good views, especially towards the coast once we get on higher ground above Holywell
Saturday 21st March 2015.
Thursday 26th March 2015.
Daresbury and Moore Nature Reserve.
Postponed - I will be gong to a funeral in the afternoon.
I'm thinking of  changing the walk to one starting at Gresty Waste, Kelsall. A short walk in the morning of 5-6 miles, so that I can get home for about 13-00. If anyone interested in this as an option, please let me know.
There is always the option of those wanting to, can exend the themselves.
See below for details of the short walk.
Distance: 10-12 miles; Climb:Less than 500' at guess.
Start: Car park Moore Nature Reserve, Lapwing Lane, Warrington. Grid ref: SJ578854.
Route to Moore Nature Reserve.
From Chester take the M53, then take the M56.
Leave M56 at Junction 11.
From Junction 11 take the A56.
Continue on the A56  past the A558 turning and follow signposted directions ahead for Moore Village.
At the next traffic lights turn left for Moore Village. As you enter the village turn right into Moore Lane
If you get as far as Moore Post Office, you've gone too far!.
Follow Moore Lane over the Ship Canal into Lapwing Lane, and the entrance to the Reserve. The car park is on the right, opposite the notice board.
The Daresbury walk is only four miles, and is taken from Jen Darling's book "Walks in West Cheshire and the Wirral". In addition it is planned to start the walk by exploring Moore Nature Reserve and possible  the Appleton reservoir area, which should take the walk up to about 10 miles or slightly more, if we decide that we want to on the day.

This walk combines two walks, one of each of the books that Carl Roger has written on "Coastal Walks On Anglesey. He describes one walk as an excellent walk along a dramatic section of the coast. good paths, but one section is a little exposed an might intimidate some people. Let's hope it's a calm day and dry underfoot! The other walk heads towards the Wylfa Power Station, where there is a possible short extension to Mynydd y Wylfa.

Walks and Dates February 2015

Thursday 5th February 2015.
Annual Walk and Meal.
Raby and More.
Our meal choices are found below. You may wish to check to see that I have entered the choices correctly.
I intend to forward our choices on Sunday evening, so you have until then to let me know of any changes are needed.
I will tell the Wheatsheaf that those walking will arrive at the Wheatsheaf Inn at about 09-30, for a 6 mile walk, expecting to be back at about 12-30, ready for the meal to start at about
13-00.
Those coming for the meal only should aim to get there some time between 12-30 and 13-00.
The Wheatsheaf Inn at Raby is about 12 miles from Upton and 15 miles from Saltney, so it should take you just under 30 minutes to get there, providing there aren't any major problems on the roads.
The Walk.
Raby and More.
Distance: 6.0 miles. Climb: 100' - Very little - walk profile is almost horizontal.
Start: Wheatsheaf Inn, Car Park. Raby. SJ310798.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m
This walk is a variation of walks by Anthony Annakin-Smith, that we have done starting in Willaston. One point to note, at this time of the year, gaiters are probably a good thing to wear!
Saturday 7th February 2015.
Llanfairfechan to Aber Ogwen and Back.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start: Llanfairfechan Promenade Car Park. Grid ref: SH679754.
Leave Chester at 08-30.
We have done this walk many times, and on occasions have taken advantage of the picnic tables at Aber Ogwen car park or even sheltered for lunch in one of the hides at the Spinnies Nature Reserve.
This is a very pleasant walk at this time of the year, although in the past we have experienced quite bracing winds! Coastal walks are always delightful, especially when you can combine them with a bit of birdwatching! High tides is about 12-30. This should make the birds come closer to shore for much of the walk.
Thursday 12th February 2015.
A Walk Around Hoylake and More.
Distance: 9 miles. Climb: 800'.
Start: Royden Country Park. Grid ref: SJ246858.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
To get Royden Park, follow the A540 from Chester to Hoylake. After passing Thursaston Hill and Caldy Rugby Club, turn right at the roundabout onto Montgomery Hill (signposted Frankby). At the Farmers Arms turn right to stone gate post into Royden Park.
This walk is taken from Jen Darling's book "More Pub Walks in Cheshire and Wirral.
Thia is a new walk for me, although much of it has been covered in walks that we have done. Part of the walk follows the beach from Red Rocks to West Kirby and then goes around the Marine Lake. High tide is at around 16-00 and isn't a big tide either, so we shouldn't have any problems walking along the beach.
Saturday 14th February 2015.
Tegg's Nose and Macclesfield Forest.
Postponed.
It will appear next month after consulting with Celia!
The new walk will by a variant of the Thursday walk that we did last month called "A Circuit of Holywell."
Thursday19th February 2015.
The Moor, Greenfield Valley and East of Holywell.
Distance: 9 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Halkyn Street car park Holywell. (opposite the hospital). Grid ref: SJ18957548.
This is a figure of eight walk, combing one walk from Ron Williams and Elfed Jones' booklet " 10 Walks Around Holywell" and one walk from Dave Berry's book " Walks Around Holywell and Halkyn Mountain". The first walk explores the moor and valley to the North of Holywell and the other walk explores the undulating countryside between Holywell and Bagillt.
Saturday 21st February 2015.
Prestatyn to Talacre and Back.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start at Barkby Beach Car Park, park near the PC. Grid ref: SJ068839.
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
This is a walk that is always on the list at this time of the year, as it is always a good time to see Winter visiting birds along the coast., so bring binoculars with you. As a change, we will complete the walk in the opposite direction to the one that we will normally take. The walk will start along the coast, on the beach if the tide permits, High tide at about 12-30  (33.8' / 10.3 m.). The return from Talacre will be through the Nature Reserve  and Caravan park and finally through the golf course.
Thursday 26th February 2015.
Around the Little Orme to Rhos On Sea.
Postponed - recent very high tides means that it is very unlikely that any seals will around Porth Dyniewaid.
See below for the new walk.
Distance: 8-9 miles. Climb: 700'.
Start: Roadside parking next to Paddling Pool and PC on Coast Road at Craig y Don, East side of Llandudno.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This has become a regular walk at any time of the year, but it will be the second time that we have done it February. The views from the top of the Little Orme are always superb, but the main reason for doing the walk so early in the year is to see if there are any Seals around Porth Dyniewaid.
Moel y Parc and Penycloddiau.
Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 1800'.
Start: Layby in Aberwheeler on left opposite Bro Lleweni (road). Grid ref: SJ096694.
Leave Chester at 09-00. The last time we did this walk it took us nearly six hours.
This a walk that we have done several times before, and includes two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Clwydian Hills". He describes it as a walk exploring attractive and little known valleys along the slopes of Moel y Parc. Expect good views from the summit of Moel y Parc and Penycloddiau if the forecast is good. The route across the top of Penycloddiau is from North to South, another location for panoramic views.
Saturday 28th February 2015.
Leasowe Lighthouse to New Brighton.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start: North Wirral Coastal Park car park. Grid ref: SJ257915.
To get to this car park, instead of turning left towards the lighthouse, as the A551 turns right onto Leasowe Road, go straight on (past PC block on right and cafe/snack hut on left). This car park has a good tarmac surface.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This is a walk along the beach to Perch Rock Fort, assuming that the water on the incoming tide is low enough. It should be, Low tide is at about 12-32!  From there, we will continue onto Vale Royal Park (where we in the past have had lunch) and onto Wallasey Gardens. Hopefully it won't be as windy as it was on the 15th January when the Thursday group last did the walk.
