Walks and Dates December 2014

Updated 25th December 2014.
Happy Christmas Everyone.
Thursday 4th December 2014
Burton and Parkgate.
Distance:10 miles. Climb:350'.
Start: Roadside parking on Denhall Lane next to benches overlooking the marshes. Grid ref: SJ301747.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
The Burton circuit is taken from Jen Darling's book "Walks in West Cheshire and the Wirral". The extension will involve some road walking through Neston to link up with the Wirral Way and onto Parkgate. The return route will use coastal paths as much as possible and passes Neston Old Quay and Denhall Quay on the way back to Denhall Lane.
Saturday 6th December 2014.
Mynydd Marian.
Distance: 7-8 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Llandulas Beach Car Park. Grid ref: SH907786.
Leave Chester at 08-30.
This walk is one that we often usually do on a Thursday, but I need to get back quite early, so I thought that it would be good one to do.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book, "Walks on the North Wales Coast". It combines an interesting section of the coat line with the attractive limestone countryside between, Old Colwyn, Llysfaen and Llandulas.
Thursday 11th December 2014.
Grindley Brook to Marbury.
Distance: 8-9 miles. Climb: 200' at a guess.
Start: Layby on the A41, East of Grindley Brook Locks Cafe and about 400 m before the roundabout / junction with the A49. Grid ref: SJ 524428.
Leave Chester at 09-00.
This walk is one that Phil saw in the Times, planned by Christopher Somerville, so ignoring the preduces of many of the group I decided to give a go! The walk starts at the Horse and Jockey, but we will start in the layby a little East of that particular hostelry.
The walk is described as one which goes through a countryside that is a maze of drumlin hills and kettlehole lakelets. I womder if we will be able to identify these two features of the landscape. He describes the walk as being boggy in places, but he did it in February, hopefully it won't be as bad for us! The walk included parts of Bishop Bennett's Way, the Sandstone Trail, South Cheshire Way and parts of the Shropshire Union Canal.
Saturday 13th December 2014.
Garreg Fawr and Coedydd Aber.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 1800 - 2000'.
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
Start: Forestry Commission car park (pay and display)at Bont Newydd. Grid ref: SH62720.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks On the North Wales Coast" , well all of one walk and part of another!
The Garreg Fawr walk explores the foothills of the Carneddau between Llanfairfechan and Abergwyngeryn, giving us contrasting views of coast and mountains. The second walk visits Aber Falls using paths on each side of the valley. All the recent rain could make the falls spectacularly at their best.
Wednesday December 18th 2014.
Halkyn, Limestone, Lead and Moel Ffagnallt.
(See start point change below)
The walk this week has been changed from the Tursday to the Wednesday, as I anticipate that many in the walking group will want to go to Gordon's funeral.
Distance:10 miles; Climb:1000'.
Start: Britannia Inn, Pentre Halkyn. Grid ref: SJ211711. As the Blue Bell Inn is closed until 17-00, we will start this walk at our usual start point at the Britannia Inn.
Leave Chester at 09-00.
We haven't started a walk from this location for quite some time. I thought that as this is the last walk before Christmas that it was a good time to do so. It combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Holywell and Halkyn Mountain". This walk combines two of my favourite walks in this fascinating area on our local patch. As this the last walk before Christmas fruit cake will be provided, but has been maturing for more that a year, sample it at your risk!
Saturday 20th December 2014.
Holywell, Bagillt and Flint.
Postponed - Billy no mates again!
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 430'.
Start: Flint Caste Car Park (East of the castle and West of the Lifeboat Station). Grid ref: SJ 246733.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk uses three walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Chester and the River Dee."  This is essentially a linear walk, so we will have to arrange enough cars to have cars at both Flint and Holywell or alternatively use the bus to take us from Flint to Holywell. (Leaves Flint McDonald's on Holywell Road, at 10-14).
The walk starts at the highest point in the walk, so could really be regarded as a gentle stroll down to the coast and back to the coast to Greenfield Docks and back to Flint!
The last time we did this walk was on a Thursday and everyone said that they enjoyed it, so I thought that it would be a good walk to do for those that didn't have to do any last minute Christmas shopping.
At this time of the year thee are plenty of Wintering birds on the coast, so it would be well worth bringing binoculars with you if you have them.
Thursday 25th December 2014.
No walk for obvious reasons!
Saturday 27th December 2014.
Llanfairfechan to Aber Ogwen and Back.
Postponed - Billy no mates again!
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start: Llanfairfechan Promenade Car Park. Grid ref: SH679754.
Leave Chester at 08-30.
We have done this walk many times, and on occasions have taken advantage of the picnic tables at Aber Ogwen car park or even sheltered for lunch in one of the hides at the Spinnies Nature Reserve.
This is a very pleasant walk at this time of the year, although in the past we have experienced quite bracing winds! Coastal walks are always delightful, especially when you can combine them with a bit of birdwatching! High tides about 14-00. This should make the burds come closer to shor on the return journey.

Walks and Dates November 2014

Updated 18th Novemebr 2014.
Saturday 1st November 2014.
Mynydd Eilian and Point Lynas and More.
Postponed.
Distance: 7-10 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Llaneilian Car Park. Grid ref: SH474929.
Leave Chester at 08-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Best Walks in North Wales". The walk visits one of Anglesey's high points, and follows a section of the Coastal Path. A good section of the coastal path is on concesssionary paths that are closed on some days, but having checked with Anglesey Council this date isn't one of them. Walking along the coast is always good at any time of the year, especially if you get good weather'. Let's hope we will get good weather on this occasion.
The difference in mileage depends on how much of an extension we add on to the planned walk.
Thursday 6th November 2014.
Pencloddiau and Moel y Parc.
Distance: 10-12 miles. Climb:1800'.
Start: Llangwyfan Forestry Car Park between Pencloddiau and Moel Arthur.Grid ref: SJ139668.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
These two walks are taken from Dave Berry's book "More Walks on the Clwydian Hills. New and extended edition". The walk normally starts from Aberwheeler, but parking is somewhat limited there. This a good walk that explores both sides of Moel y Parc and Pencloddiau.  Expect superb views on a clear and frosty day.
Saturday 8th November 2014.
Garreg Fawr and Coedydd Aber.
Postponed - I need to sort my rooms out before the decorators arrive!
Thursday 13th November 2014.
Bersham, Erddig and King's Mill.
Distance: Up to 10 miles. Climb:500'.
Start: Felin Puleston Car Park. Grid ref:SJ325492.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk is a low level walk, exploring the Clywedog valley around Bersham and  Erddig.  When we did this walk in December 2012, the weather wasn't very nice and it was very waterlogged underfoot. There was so much water in the river,  we couldn't get under the bridge at King's Mill. Hopefully we will have better conditions this time round.  If you ae a member of the National Trust please bring your membership card.
Saturday 15th November 2014.
The Roaches and Lud's Church.
Distance: 9 -10 miles. Climb: 2000'.
Start: Roadside parking below the Roaches North of Upper Hulme. Grid ref: SK004621.
Leave Chester at 8-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from the Pathfinder Guide to the Peak District.  The Roaches has become one of our annual favourite walks, but this route is one that we have only done once before.  It includes the main Roaches ridge, and possibly Hen Cloud. The planned return route will be back along Black Brook. Can be boggy, especially on the lower route back from Lud's Church.
Thursday 20th November 2014.
Newton Mountain Forest, Cae-Llwyd and Ty Mawr Reservoirs.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Lay-by near Bethlehem Chapel, Rhosllanerchrugog. Grid ref: SJ289468.
To get to the lay-by enter Rhos on the B5097 from the North.go past Ysgol y Grango, and just past the Coach and Horses pub turn right along Mountain Street. At the junction by the Sun Inn, turn left along Hall Street to find a lay-by by Llys-y-Mynydd and opposite Bethlehem Chapel.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines another two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Ruabon Mountain, the Clywedog Valley and Hope Mountain". The walks explore the edges of Rhuabon Mountain and visits two of Rhosllanerchrugog's upland reservoirs.
We last did this walk in November 2012.
Saturday 22nd November 2014.
Around Lyme Park.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: Nelson Pit Visitor Centre, Higher Poynton. Grid ref: SJ945833.
Leave Chester at 08-30.
This walk is taken from Jen Darling's book "Best Pub Walks in Cheshire", although we will start at the Neslon Pit Visitor Centre car park, and probably won't visit the hostelry that she suggests. The walk includes, a section of the Macclesfield Canal, open moorland, the Bow Stones and passes two reservoirs before going through Lyme Park. On reaching Lyme Park, we will decide whether to continue on the described route or take a more direct route to the car park. The open moor section has been known to be quite boggy on previous visits.
Thursday 27th November 2014.
The Alun Valley, Moel y Waun, Llyn Gweryd and Limestone Pastures.
Distance: 9-10 miles; Climb: 1000'.
Start: Llandegla Village car park, adjacent to the bus shelter and opposite the Post Office. Grid ref: SJ196523.
Leave Chester at 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines another two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks on the Clwydian Hills". He describes one walk as being delightful and the other as being an easy walk with scenic delights. What more could we want from a walk, and as we know Dave Berry is frequently delighted on his walks! From past experience parts of the route can be muddy underfoot.
Saturday 29th November 2014.
Mynydd Mynyllod, Llyn Maes y Clawdd and Earl's Wood. Postponed - Conw Mountain and Foel Lus Instead.
Distance: 11-12 miles. Climb: 1800'.
Start: Llanderfel. Park next to the stream. Grid ref: SH982371.
Leave Chester 08-00 a.m.

The second walk features two attractive lakes and includes a section of the "Queens Walk" named after Queen Victoria'a visit in 1828.

Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start: Nelson Pit Visitor Centre. Grid ref: SJ940835.

The walk combines a walk from Graham Beech's book " Eas Cheshire Walks " and a walk from East Cheshire's Walks From Nelson Pit. The cost of entry to the museum is £6-75 with a 50p discount for Senior concessions.
The main part of the walk includes sections of the Middlewood Way, Cown Edge Way and the Cheshire Ring Walk.
Thursday 11th October 2014.
Knutsford and Several Peovers.
Distance: 11-12 miles; Climb: 200'.
Start: Long stay car park on Tatton Street, Knutsford. This is a pay and display car park, £4-30 for over 6 hours according to the Knutsford web site. Grid ref: SJ750789.
Leave Chester at 8-45 a.m.
This walk is a little further away than usual, so to ensure that we are walking by 10-00 a.m., I thought it would be better to leave a little earlier than usual.
Annie of course will be able to have a longer than usual lay in this morning!
This walk is taken from Jack Baker and Jack Hanmer's book "Walking in Cheshire". This book was published in 1974 and updated in 1978, so following the directions may prove challenging. They describe the walk as a walk over fairly level, but pleasantly wooded country, although places can be muddy in Winter. This will give Annie another chance to leave home a little later than usual to meet us for a Thursday walk!
Saturday 11th October 2014.
Craig Bron-Banog and Part of Cwm Alwen.
Postponed until later in the year.
See below for details of the replacement walk for this date.
Distance:11 miles; Climb:1100'.
Start:Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Riverside picnic site. Grid ref:SH987496. Take the Ruthin to Cerrigydrudion road. Turn right just after the bridge by the Crown Inn. Continue down the road past the church. The picnic area is on the right just before the school.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
Both walks are taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks In the Hidden Heart North Wales". The Craig Bron-Banog walk is new to us. He describes it as an eight mile figure of eight walk exploring the afforested undulating countryside South-east of Llyn Brenig. The route meanders through Clocaenog Forest, passes a hidden waterfall and an ancient standing stone before reaching the highest point of Craig Bron-Banog with its panoramic views.
Aled Isaf and More.
Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: Off road parking just before the dam on Llyn Aled. Grid ref: SH916579.
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
This walk was originally planned for the end of last month.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks on the Denbigh Moors" or his slightly newer book "Hidden Heart of North Wales". The walk explores the expansive  tract of moorland and upland pastures around  Llyn Aled and  Aled Isaf. The route in part follows tracks not easily seen and is for experienced walkers only.  At one point the walk follows a delightful upland path via Llys Dymper, before returning South over the moorland top of Foel Lwyd. The extension allows us to explore moorland paths over Moel Bengam and Cefn Du along paths that I have wanted to explore for some time. Has been known to be boggy, but hopefully not too boggy at this time of the year. As an extra challenge we may complete this walk in an anticlockwise direction, the opposite way to the way we normally complete the walk!
Thursday 16th October 2014.
Llannefydd, Mynydd y Gaer and Moelfre Isaf.
Distance: 9-10 miles;Climb: 1700'.
Start: Car park by the village hall in Llannefydd, opposite the Buck Inn. Grid ref:SH982706.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walking in the Vale of Clwyd and the Denbigh Moors", and is a walk that we really enjoyed the first time that we did it. This is a refreshing walk over Moel y Gaer, the site of an Iron Age hill fort. Again we will extend the walk to include Moelfre Isaf.
Saturday 18th October 2014.
Clip-y-Orsedd, The Druid Circle and Foel Lus.
Distance:11 miles. Climb:2400'.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
Start: Car park behind the bank in Llanfairfechan. Turn right of Village Road. Grid ref:SH682747.
his walk uses two walks Dave Berry's book "Walks on the North Wales Coast." These two walks combine to make one of my favourite walks in this area as they explore the hills behind Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr. Hopefully we will visit the impressive Druids' Stone Circle and contour around the superb high level Panoramic Walk round Foel Lus.
Thursday 23rd October 2014.
Barber Hill, Vivod Estate and the Horseshoe Falls.
Distance:11 miles.
Climb: 2000'
Start: Mill Street, long stay car park (pay and display, £3-50). The car park is on the A542, East of the Station and adjacent to the Ponsonby Arms. Park on the bottom by the river. This is a new car park for us, so hopefully we will all find it.
Grid ref:
SJ216421.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley". The most memorable time that we did this combination of walks was in March 2006, when there was snow on the ground. It was a glorious sunny and the sun reflecting on the snow on the trees sparkled like jewels. This was a glorious walk, hopefully to be repeated again this time round, but without the snow!

Saturday 25th October 2014.
No walk.
The Roaches and Lud's Church.
Postponed until 15th November 2014.
Distance: 9 -10 miles. Climb: 2000'.

Thursday 30th October 2014.
Erddig, Wat's Dyke and Sontley.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 500'.
Start: Felin Puleston Car park, Wrexham. Grid ref: SJ325492. To get to the car park, take the A483 towards Wrexham, turn left onto the A5152 to Rhostyllen and Wrexham. Turn right onto a side road sign-posted Erddig, and almost immediately turn left down a side track sign-posted Felin Puleston Countryside Centre to a parking area by farm buildings.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Rhuabon Mountain, the Clywedog Valley and Hope Mountain". They are described as a walk through the Erddig Estate and the attractive farmland of Felin Puleston. It also includes an impressive section of Wat's Dyke.

Distance 10-11 miles; Climb:2000'.
Start: Riverside car park in Llanfair Talhaiarn. Grid ref:SH927702.
Leave Chester at 9-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walking in the Vale of Clwyd and the Denbigh Moors". This is a walk that we really enjoyed the first time that we did it, hence its regular inclusion on the list. It is nominally only a 5 mile walk, but the extension doubles it.
Saturday 6th September 2014.
The Lawley and Caer Caradoc.
Distance:10-11 miles; Climb:2000'.
Start: Church Stretton centre car park (pay and display). Grid ref:SO454911.
Leave Chester 8-00 a.m.
It's Dotterel time again, so this is another walk that may give us the chance of seeing them again. The walk combines two walks taken from Ian Jones' booklet "20 Walks From Church Stretton".It is a walk that we first did in 1998 and have done several times since then. This is a superb walk, especially on a good day. It is the nearest that you can get to a ridge walk, particularly along the Lawley! The last time we did this walk we were lucky to see an Osprey near the fisheries, almost as good as a Dotterel.
Thursday 11th September 2014.
A Clwydian Trio.
Distance: 9 miles; Climb:1900' '.
Start: Pentre-celyn car park . Grid ref: SJ150534.

This is another walk by Debbie Hamilton and is taken from the "Walking" magazine. This walk includes the section of Offa's Dyke Path goes near Moel y Plas, Moel Gyw, Moel Llanfair and Boncyn y Waen-grogen. Her walk starts from Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, but we will start at Pentre Celyn about half a mile beyond Graigfechan.

No walk - I'm going on a different sort of trail!

Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb:1500'.
Start: Greenfield Valley car park on the A548. Grid ref: SJ197775.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk uses two complete walks and part of a third walk from Dave berry's book "Walks Around Holywell and Halkyn Mountains". This will be the second time that we will complete the whole of the Greenfield Valley walk and the short route on the Gadlys walk.  A reasonable amount of climb as we climb from the coast road to Holywell on two occasions.
Saturday 20th September 2014.
Win Hill and Lose Hill.
Distance: 9 miles. Climb: 2000'.
Start: Castleton Road Car Park in Hope (Just off the A618). Grid ref: SK17128350. Alternative parking next to church on Market Place.
Leave Chester at 08-00 a.m.
This is a walk by Cressbrook Multi-Media. It is described as a fine walk with excellent views. This is a circuit from Hope that provides a magnificent day out.
This is a new walk for me, and one that I've wanted to do for some time. I've done walks including Win Hill before, but I can't recall ever having walked on Lose Hill.
Thursday 25th September 2014.
Rhos-on-Sea, Bryn Euryn and Coed Pwllcrochan.
Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 1800'.

One is described as a varied walk exploring the hinterland behind Rhos-on-Sea and includes the hillfort in Bryn Euryn Nature Reserve. The other walk offers panoramic views as it meanders through the undulating countryside bordering on Mochdre, Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea.
Saturday 27th September 2014.

Thursday 14th August 2014.

This is a walk that we did in January last year and enjoyed it so much. It has been on the list already this year, but the weather wasn't kind and we only did part of the walk. Hopefully it will be better in August than it was in March!

Leave Chester at 08-30.
This walk involves two walks from Robert Harris's book "Walks in Ancient Wales". Although these  two Anglesey walks are quite near to each other, it isn't easy to link them using footpaths and country roads, so we will have a short drive after the second walk to get to the start of the second. The walk includes visiting several burial chambers and standing stones and is the main interest in putting these walks on the list.
Thursday 10th July 2014.
Craig Adwynt, Nant Clwyd Hall and the Afon y Maes Valley.
Distance: 9-12 miles. Climb:1500'.
Start: Llanelidan. Grid ref: SJ108503. To get to the parking area, take the A494 Ruthin to Bala road, 2 miles after Pwllglas, turn left towards Llanelidan. Keep ahead at the crossroads as you enter the village, then go down a "No through road" past houses, telephone and a chapel to the end of the road where there is a parking area.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd", and explores the beautiful, unspoilt undulating countryside around the Nant Clwyd Estate.  It will be interesting to see how the work around the hall as changed the landscape.  We assumed that they were creating a lake, but were they?
We usually choose a route that results in a walk of about 10 miles.
Saturday 12th July 2014.
Moel Siabod.
Distance: 6 miles. Climb: 2400'.
Start: Layby on the A5, East of Pont Cyfyng about 1 mile East of Capel Curig.

This is the route described in the Nutalls book "The Mountains of England and Wales. Volume 1 Wales., although we may change the route of descent on the day. Saturday 19th July 2014.
The White Shark.
A Classic White Peak Walk!
Postponed. New walk will be decided on Friday evening at the Mill in Chester
Distance: 12-13 miles; 2100'.
Start: Longnor car park. Grid ref: SK088649.
Leave Chester at 08-00.
To get to Longnor follow the A51 towards Nantwich. Then the A500 towards Stoke on Trent. Then the A53 to Leek. From Leek take the A523 road to Ashbourne. At the Green Man Pub. turn on to the B5053 to Onecote, Warsow and Longnor. In Longnor turn right and the new car park is on the right. The alternative parking area is on the cobbled square in the centre of Longnor.
This walk is one we did quite a few years ago, on a day that we first experienced the delights of the Wilkes Head in Leek.
The walk is taken from the Trail Magazine. It suggest that the walk takes 6.5 hours, but I expect that we will take a little longer! This walk was a walk first recommended by Ian Setterington, a former colleague, who sadly died last year and who was well known for liking long walks.
Thursday 24th July 2014.
Around Minera Mountain.
Distance: 9-11 miles. Climb: 1000'.
Start: Mineral Lead Mine Centre Car park. grid ref: SJ276509.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Ruabon and Hope Mountain". The walk is described as being quite demanding, especially on the open access moorland. A walk for experienced walkers only - do we count? Can be boggy underfoot! The last time that the group did this walk, I missed out as I had had an operation on my hand and hadn't recovered sufficiently. From those that did do the walk, I understand route finding can be challenging, particularly around the quarries and moorland.
Saturday 26th July 2014.
Meini Hirion and More
Postponed - too far to drive on a hot day!
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 500'.
Start: Coastal car park near Wylfa Power Station. Grid ref: SH356938.
Leave Chester 08-00.
This walk involves two walks from Robert Harris's book "Walks in Ancient Wales". Much of the walk is along quiet lanes, but we will uses field paths and part of the Coastal Path to link the two walks. The walk goes South down an access road to Tregele, down a minor road to link with the path to some standing stones to meet up with the second walk. From Llanfechell we will take the path North around Pen y Bryn and on to Cemaes and return along the Coastal Path. Bring binoculars with you.
Thursday 31st July 2014.
Bryn Pydew, Coed Brongarth and Gloddaeth Hall.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 1500'.

Directions to get to the car park. Leave the A55 at Junction 19 and follow the A470 towards Llandudno. At a roundabout turn right signposted to Esgryn / Pydew. Go past Esgryn Road to find a small car park on the right.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Llandudno".  These walks explore the area around St. David's College that we normally visit on our Little Orme walks.  In addition, we will take a short there and back extension to visit the obelisk that we see clearly as we travel along the A55.
Hopefully we will see this area in more Summer like conditions than we have in the past.

This is a annual Bluebell Wood Walk, and is effectively a figure of eight walk based on Lloc. This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry’s book “ Walks Around Holywell and Halkyn Mountain”.  The walk will probably nearer 10 miles as we will only complete a small section of the Gorsedd Round.

Distance:10.4 miles; Climb:1600'.
Start:Car Park at the Western edge of Dyserth on the A5151. Grid ref: SJ062793.

Saturday 10th May 2014.
The Lawley and Caer Caradoc.
Postponed until September 2014.
Distance:10-11 miles; Climb:2000'.
Start:Church Stretton centre car park (pay and display).
Thursday 15th May 2014.
Around the Old Horseshoe Pass, the Eglwyseg Rocks and Glen.
Distance:10.3 miles; Climb:2205'.
Start:Car park opposite the Ponderosa Cafe on the Horseshoe Pass. Grid ref:SJ193481.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walking Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley". These are two delightful walks, especially when the weather is good. An easy start heading down hill, a superb middle section with a challenging climb up the old Horseshoe Pass road at the end!
Saturday 17th May 2014.
The Stiperstone Ridge and Green Hill.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: Stipperstones Car park, East of The Bog, East of the A488, South of Gavels. Grid ref: SO369977.
Leave Chester at 08-00 a.m.
This is another of the walks taken from Steve Goodier's book "Walks in the Shropshire Hills". I know the popularity of this little ridge means that walking here isn't everyone's cup of tea, but when viewed from the Long Mynd it always looks inviting. We haven't completed a walk on the Stipperstones for over 10 years, so I thought it was worth giving it an airing. The Stipperstones walk is only 6 miles, so we will extend the walk Eastward to include Green Hill, Oak Hill and Castle  Ring Fort.
 Thursday 22nd May 2014.
Grindley Brook to Marbury.
Postponed until the Autumn. See below for new walk.
Distance: 9 miles. Climb: 500'.
Start: Lay-by on the A41, East of Grindley Brook Locks Cafe, about 440 yards before the roundabout junction with the A49. The layby is near an old mill and telephone kiosk and is on the right coming from Chester.
Leave Chester at 09-00.
This is a walk that Phil saw in the Times and is a route described by Christopher Somerville. His walk starts at the Horse and Jockey, but we will start about half mile to the East and meet the described walk at the canal. He describes the walk as exploring the countryside through a maze of drumlin hills and kettlehole lakelets. He describes the walk as being boggy, but he did it in February, so hopefully it won't be too bad for us!

The Point of Ayr RSPB Hide and Talacre to Prestatyn.
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start at Talacre Beach Car Park, on the right just before the Smugglers Inn. Grid ref: SJ124848.
Leave Chester at 08-00 a.m.
This is a walk that is always on the list at this time of the year, as it is always a good time to see Little terns, so bring binoculars with you. Hopefully we will see orchids too
As a change, we will complete the walk in the opposite direction to the one that we will normally take.
The walk will start with a walk to the Point of Ayr RSPB hide, and then set of through  Nature Reserve on the inland route to Prestatyn. Our return route will then be along the coast, on the beach. High tide is about before six in the morning, so walking on the beach should be no problem.
Saturday 24th May 2014.
Bluebell Woods Around Parbold.
Postponed, see below for possible new walk
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 800'.
Start: Hunter's Hill Quarry Nature Reserve. Grid ref: SD503123
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
This walk is a walk that we did for the first time last year. This walk is on the East of Parbold, and visits up to ten different woods, so hopefully some will still have Bluebells on show.  The walk also includes part of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal as far as Appley Bridge. This walk is one that a friend from WEF did last year, but there is no description, just the OS map, so our map reading will have to be up to scratch and hopefully better than last year when we had an unplanned extension of about 4 miles!  The walk includes a section around Anderton Mill and High Moor. Bring binoculars with you just in case.
A Walk Around the Great Orme.  Cancelled
Distance: 8-10 miles, but will be decided on the day as we need to be back in Chester by 17-30.
Climb: 500'-1000', depending on the route we take.
Start at Llandudno West shore. Roadside parking near the boating lake. Grid ref: SH771820.
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
Thursday 29th May 2014.
Moel Fferna and Nant-y-Pandy.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 2000’.
Start: Lay-by adjacent to the Butterfly Man Craft Centre on the A5 Llangollen to Corwen road near Glyndyfrdwy. Grid ref:SJ11584360.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
The described part of the walk is taken from Dave Berry’s book “Walks Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley”. He describes it as a fascinating walk through the wooded Nant-y-Pandy with its old slate works.  The extension takes us to the summit of Moel Fferna, let’s hope for a good day so that we can linger on the top and taken in the excellent views.
Saturday 31st May 2014.
Around Holy Island.
Distance:12-13 miles. Climb:1326'.
Start: Roadside parking opposite PC by the Old Harbour in Holyhead. Just before the turning to South Stack. SH245831.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
This is another walk that has become an annual favourite. Much of the walk is along the Coastal path, but we will probably make a detour to visit the summit of Holyhead Mountain. A good chance of seeing Choughs, Guillemots, Razorbills and even Puffins. Bring binoculars if you can.

Distance:11 miles. Climb: 1600'.
Start: Car park at the Southern side of Moel Arthur. Grid ref: SJ148658.
Leave Chester 9-00a.m.
This walk combines another two walks from Dave Berry's book "More Walks from the Clwydian Hills". The first walk that crosses the slopes of Plas-Yw to the Wheeler Valley is one of my favourite walks in this area.  He describes the second walk as a walk that meanders through the attractive and varied countryside between Hendre and Cilcain.
Saturday 5th April 2014
St. Celynnin's Church and Tal y Fan.
Distance:7-8 miles. Climb: 2600'.

This walk is described as exploring the scenic upland pastures, full of antiquity, featuring a remote ancient church, Maen Penddu (standing stone), a burial chamber and Cae Bach (hill fort). Visiting Cae Bach may involve a there and back extension! Although this walk is shorter than our usual walks, Dave Berry does suggest that we should allow at least 5 hours and is for experienced walkers only!
Thursday 10th April 2014.
Cwm Coed Drwg and Moel Morfydd.
Distance: 9 miles; Climb: 2000'.
Start:Lay-by close to the Butterfly Man Craft Centre at Glyndyfrdwy. Grid ref:SJ158436.

This is a walk taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley". This is another walk that we have done several times before. Dave Berry describes it as an exhilarating walk exploring the Western hills of the Llantysilio Mountains, giving extensive views throughout. The climb through heather clad moorland to the summit of Moel yr Gaer is an extension that we will do, weather permitting.
Saturday 12th April 2014.
Solomon's Tower, The Goyt and Corber Hill.
Postponed - see below for new walk.
Distance:10-12 miles; Climb:2250'.
Start:Poole's Cavern Car Park, Buxton. Grid ref:SK0499726.
Leave Chester at 8-30 a.m.
Last year when we attempted these walks, it was somewhat misty, particularly at the start of the walk and climbing Solomon's Tower left everything to the imagination, but all agreed it would be worth a second visit. Hopefully we will get good views on our second visit. The walks are taken from Mark Richard's book "White Peak Walks - Northern Dales". A surprisingly good walk considering that three walks are linked along the streets of Buxton.
A Tale of Two Quarries and the Foothills of Moel Morfydd.
Distance:10-11 miles; Climb:2800'.
Start: Opposite Capel Hebron, Rhewl. Grid ref:SJ182449.
Leave Chester 8-45 a.m.
Two walks taken from Dave Berry's book ""Walking Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley. The two quarries walk is described as an exhilarating walk exploring the foothills and attractive South facing side valleys of the Llantysilio mountain range.
The second walk is described as a walk that explores the beautiful Dee Valley and includes passing around the head of an attractive side valley beneath Moel Morfydd, offering superb views of the Dee Valley and beyond.
This is a walk that we usually do on a Thursday, but parking is limited, so I thought it would be better to include it on the Saturday list for a change.
Thursday 17th April 2014.
Y Foel, Biddulph Tower and Around Vivod Mountain.
Distance:10 miles.
Climb: 1500'
Start: Llangollen long stay car park (pay and display). This is the car park that you get to by taking the second road on the right

This walk involves as steady ascent along a by-way called Allt y Badi up to the ridge above the Ceiriog Valley, where there are superb views in all directions. After visiting the Biddulph Tower on Y Foel, the route heads East to the North Berwyn Way which is followed all the way back to Llangollen. Possible extension o the top of Vivod Mountain.

Saturday 19th April 2014.
Llyn Maes y Clawdd and Earl's Wood and Mynydd Mynyllod.

Start: Riverside parking in Llandderfel village. Grid ref: SH982371.
Leave Chester at 8-30 a.m.
This walk involves two walks taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Y Bala and Penllyn". The first walk is new to us and completes the walks in the book that start from Llandderfel. He describes this walk as a delightful walk in the beautiful Upper Dee Valley, featuring two attractive lakes. The second walk is described as exploring delightful hidden upland pastures. Last time we extended this walk to explore the moorland area a little more, but this time we will keep strictly to the route description and may even use the alternative shorter route.
Thursday 24th April 2014.
Valle Crucis, Coed Hyddyn and the Horseshoe Falls.
New car park
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 2000'.
Start: Llantysilio Green Car Park.

To get to the car park, take the A542 Llangollen to Ruthen road. After about 1.5 miles turn left on to the B5103 towards Corwen and Rhewl. After half a mile keep straight on to find the car park on the left hand side. PC block also present, but never seems to be open these days.
This walk combines two walks taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Llangollen and the Dee Valley". At Llantysilio Green the walk heads for Valle Crucis Abbey across Coed Hyrddyn and heads North before returning to Llantysilio Church The second part of the walk starts with a stroll along the canal to Llangollen before by rising from the River Dee and meanders around a wooded spur above the valley, giving superb views over Llangollen. The walk then drops down to Berwyn Halt, over the river with good views of the Chain Bridge and up the road to the Llantysilio Green Car Park. A scenic walk with excellent views.

Pendle Hill – the annual search for Dotterel.
Distance:7-8 miles. Climb:1400’.
Start: Downham Village Car park. Grid ref: SD785442.
Leave Chester:8-30 a.m.
This is an extra walk for this week, so is a little shorter than usual.  It revives the May Day walk that we used to take before a certain government decided they didn't want to celebrate a day for the workers! The route today is the one in Terry Marsh’s book “Fifty Classic Walks in Lancashire”. He describes it as “undoubtedly the finest ascent of Pendle Hill”. Let’s hope for a good day weather-wise, topped up with good views of Dotterel as we did a couple of years ago.  Don’t forget to bring binoculars.

This walk combines two walks from Jen Darling's book "Walks in West Cheshire and Wirral". Start: Moel Famau Forest Car park (pay on entry. £1 last time we used this car park), just East of the PC block.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines to routes from Dave Berry's Books, one from "Walks in the Clwydian Hills" and one from "Walks in the Clwydian Hills - New Edition." This is a walk that we did in January last year and enjoyed it so much, that it was suggested that we do a similar walk again, but visit the Jubilee Tower three times, two's enough for me!
Saturday 8th March 2014
Porth-Llwyd Falls, Cwm Port-Llwyd and Moel Eilio.
Distance:10.3  miles; Climb: 2100'.
Start: Roadside parking in Dolgarrog in road opposite Dolgarrog Social Club. Grid ref:SH769677.

This walk combines another two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Betws-y-coed and the Conwy Valley". One walk he describes as a demanding 3 mile walk ascending the steep wooded slopes above Dolgarrog and includes a waymarked trail commemorating the 1925 dam disaster. The second walk explores remote upland valleys using an old 2' narrow railway track and returns across Moel Eilio ridge. The final part of this walk passes Porth-Llwyd Falls, a popular attraction with Victorian visitors.
Thursday 13th March 2014.
Penycloddiau and Moel Arthur.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 1500'.
Start: Llangwyfan Forestry car park: SJ138668
Leave Chester 09-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Clwydian Hills".  This area of the Clwydians has so much to offer, and Moel Arthur and Penycloddiau are particularly good.  On a good day the views from both hill forts is superb.
Saturday 15th March 2014.
Moel y Parc and Penycloddiau
Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 1800'.
Start: Layby in Aberwheeler on left opposite Bro Lleweni (road). Grid ref: SJ096694.

This a walk that we have done several times before, and includes two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Clwydian Hills". He describes it as a walk exploring attractive and little known valleys along the slopes of Moel y Parc. Expect good views from the summit of Moel y Parc and Penycloddiau as the forecast is good. The route across the top of Penycloddiau is from North to South, another location for panoramic views.
The Anson Engine Museum, Poynton Pits and More.
This walk has been postponed until 4th October 2014,

The main part of the walk includes sections of the Middlewood way and the Cheshire Ring Canal Walk.
Thursday 20th March 2014.
Around Clocaenog Forest and Pincyn Llys.
Distance:11 miles; Climb:1500'.
Start: Cyffylliog. Grid ref:SJ060578.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m. and meet at the riverside car park, Ruthin. Parking can be difficult in this small village, so I suggest that we meet at the riverside car park in Ruthin (Grid ref:SJ121582) and take as few cars as possible on the Cyffylliog.
In the past this challenging walk has not been regarded as one of favourite walks, but I quite like it, especially on a good day. The walks are taken from his Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Hiraethog Moors and Lakes" and explores the undulating upland pastures and forest between Cyffylliog and Clocaenog.
Saturday 22nd March 2014.
No all day walk - Church Spring Cleaning Day in the morning!
Penycloddiau - an afternoon stroll!
Distance: 5 miles. Climb: 600'.
Start: Llangwyfan Forestry Car park. Grid ref: SJ138668.
Leave Chester at 13-00.
This walk is taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Clwydian Hills".  It is a delightful walk that crosses the Hillfort of Penycloddiau and then returns along a high level track contouring the hillside, before heading along a delightful path through the forest (much of it cleared giving better views) back to the car park. This walk gives superb views from Penycloddiau and the high level path.
Dave Berry describes this as one of his favourite walks, I'm sure we could all agree!
Thursday 27th March 2014.
The Little Orme and Coed Gaer.
Distance:7-10 miles; Climb:1760'.
Start: Roadside parking close to PC on the beach road at Craig y Don.Grid ref: SH799822.
Leave Chester 8-45 a.m.
I last did the Little Orme in February, and we got speaking to a lady that march/April was a good time to see seals, so I decided to include it at the end of March. I don't suppose it will be any better than the 18 we saw on the 22nd February 2014, but perhaps there may be some pups!
Always a good walk. This walk is becoming an annual event, but normally we complete it in May and hope to find orchids in flower.  This is too late for the orchids, but I'm sure that won't detract from this delightful walk. The views across the bay to the Great Orme are stunning. There is always an outside chance of seeing seal, and there should still be plenty of birds about, so bring binoculars with you.
The shorter route is just over 7 miles, so how long the walk eventually ends up depends on what route we take when we get near the college.
Saturday 29th March 2014.
Jumbles, Wayoh, Turton and Entwistle Reservoirs.
Distance:10-11 miles. Climb:1200'.
Start:Waterfold Car Park, off Bradshaw Road (A676), Jumbles Country Park.
Leave Chester 8-30 a.m.
This walk is based on a walk taken from Terry Marsh's book "Fifty Classic Walks in Lancashire". He describes the walk as a pleasant walk on good paths. The extension to Turton and Entwistle Reservoirs includes another section of the Witton Weaver Way and crosses Turton Heights and a hill called Cheetham Cross. A good and varied walk. Has been known to be on the boggy side on the descent from Cheetham Cross!

Walks and Dates February 2014

Updated on 21st February 2014.
News from Dave and Sylvia.
Dave and Sylvia back in Chester. Recovery going well. Regular visits from the District Nurse.
Saturday 1st February 2014.
The Llugwy and Lledre Valley. Postponed
Distance: 8-9 miles; Climb: 1000'.
Start: Railway station car park in the centre of Betws-y Coed. Grid ref: SH795565.
Leave Chester at 8-30 a.m.
This is another walk taken from Dave Berry's new book "Walks Around Betws-y-Coed and the Conwy Valley". This walk links the beautiful wooded Llugwy and Lledre Valleys. It takes in Sarn Helen, the former Roman Road, and reaches over 800' before descending in to the Lledre Valley. It involves a steep climb to Llyn Elsi or at least that is what Dave Berry says!
Thursday 6th February 2013.
Leasowe Lighthouse to New Brighton.
Distance: 9-11 miles. Climb: 200'.
Start: North Wirral Coastal Park car park. Grid ref: SJ257915.(New start point)
To get to this car park, instead of turning left towards the lighthouse, as the A551 turns right onto Leasowe Road, go straight on (past PC block on right and cafe/snack hut on left). This car park has a good tarmac surface.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
This is a walk along the beach to Perch Rock Fort, assuming that the water on the incoming tide is low enough. High tide at 15-40 (27.8' /8.5 m). From there, we will continue onto Vale Royal Park (where we in the past we have had lunch) and onto Wallasey Gardens. Hopefully the weather will be kind as it was last year.
On the return there will be plenty of birds to see as the tide comes in, so bring binoculars with if you have any.
I wonder if the drift wood ship survived the Winter storms, or perhaps a new one is in the process if being built!
Saturday 8th February 2013.
Mow Cop, Congleton Edge and the Cheshire Ring Canal.
Postponed
Distance: 10 miles. Climb: 1800'.
Start: Mow Cop Nation Trust Car Park (Members only, bring your membership card or car park badge). Grid ref: SJ856573.
Leave Chester at 08-00 a.m.
This walk combines a walk from Carl Rogers's book "Circular Walks Along The Gritstone Trail" and part of a walk taken from the "Pathfinder Guide to Cheshire". This walk is a little shorter than the one that w did in 2008. Good views from the ridges.
Hopefully the weather will be better than the ice/snow and mist that we experienced last year!
If it has snowed  in this area, then I will probably change the walk to one at a lower level.
 Thursday 13th February 2014.
Bunbury and More.
Distance: 9-10 miles. Climb: 350'.
Start: The Green by St. Boniface's Church, Bunbury. Grid ref: SJ570581.
Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.
The described part of the walk is taken from Jen Darling's book "Walks in West Cheshire and the Wirral". The walk explores the area around Bunbury between Beeston and Wardle Hall Lock, and South as far as Haughton Hall. The walk includes a fairly lengthy section of the Shropshire Union Canal. Field paths at this time of the year can be on the muddy side!
Saturday 15th February 2014.
Llyn Elsi and Sarn Helen probably with a Riverside extension.
Postponed.
Distance: 6-9 miles;Climb:1000'.
Start: Betws-y-coed main car park opposite the station. Grid ref:SH795565.
Leave Chester at 8-30 a.m.
This walk combines two walks from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Betws-y-coed and the Conwy Valley" The main walk visits Llyn Elsi and with a little added extra we could complete a circuit of the lake. The second walk descend from the high point along Sarn Helen, the Roman road from Caerhun in the Conwy Valley to Carmarthen. The final section back to Betws-y-coed is along the riverside path, always a treat and good for spotting our feathered friends too.
Thursday 20th February 2014.
Delamere Forest
Distance: 10 miles:
Start: Barnbridge Gates car park. Grid ref: SJ542716.
This walk is taken from Jen Darling's book "More Pub Walks in Cheshire and Wirral".
Leave Chester at 9-00 am.
To get to the start point take the A51 from Chester to Tarvin. Then take the B5393 (Ashton Lane) left through Ashton towards Mouldsworth. Take the second turn on the right, just before entering Mouldsworth, to Delamere and Hatchmere. The car park is on the right after about 2 miles.
Most of us will have walked these paths several times in the past, but not often when there likely to free from running children. Again the whole route should give good bird spotting opportunities, especially as we go close to Linmere, Flaxmere and Hatchmere. Don't forget to bring your binoculars with you.
Saturday 22nd February 2014.
Around the Little Orme to Rhos On Sea.
Distance: 8-9 miles. Climb: 700'.
Start: Roadside parking next to Paddling Pool and PC on Coast Road at Craig y Don, East side of Llandudno.
Leave Chester at 08-30 a.m.
This has become a regular walk at any time of the year, but it will be the first time that we have done it February. The views from the top of the Little Orme are always superb, but the main reason for doing the walk so early in the year is to see if there are any Seals around Porth Dyniewaid.
Thursday 28th February 2014.
Garth Wood, Felin Blwm Wood and Maen Achwyfan.
Distance: 9-10 miles; Climb: 1264'.
Start: Whitford village. Roadside parking opposite the church. Grid ref: SJ147782.
Leave Chester 9-00 a.m.
This walk combines two walks taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks Around Holywell and Halkyn Mountain". It is quite some time since I have done the first walk. Unfortunately it is only 4.5 miles and the only other walk that links in well with it is Maen Achwyfan, a walk that we have done many times before, but this will be the first time in 2014.
