Walk stats: 9.9 miles. Climb: 1867’,
Time: 5 hours 34 minutes. On the move walking average: 2.3 m.p.h. Overall Walk average: 1.8 m.p.h.
Temperature: 2.5 – 5.0 Celsius.
Beaufort Wind Force: 2, just a 7.2 m.p.h Gentle breeze
Group: Martyn and Phil.
Although it was pretty cool, once we got walking, it felt almost warm, perfect conditions for walking. However, whenever we stopped, are hands soon started to get cold.
Distant views were somewhat misty, although we could easily make out the Clocaenog and Prestatyn windfarms. Their turbines were only turning slowly, so not much power was being generated today.
Lunch was taken, just before the Moel Gyw turn off, where we took advantage of a small water tank covered by concrete slabs as perching places.
It was very noticeable that lots of work had been to replace stiles with new kissing gates, always appreciated now that we are getting a little older!
Lots of trees had also ben felled in the woods that we went through, some being replaced with new samplings.
Despite the weather being good, we didn’t see that many other walkers.
We didn’t take any short cuts, except for missing out the there and back the top of Moel y Plas and Moel Gyw, so our walk today was nearly 10 miles, still longer than we expected, but shorter than the 11.5 miles had we done the extensions.
Nevertheless, we arrived back at the car, just before the light started to fade and the temperature started to drop
Birds seen or heard today included: Common blackbird, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Raven, Woodpigeon, Rook, Pied wagtail, Herring gull, House sparrow, Black billed magpie, European robin, Common buzzard and Red kite.
Overall, an enjoyable walk and it was good to catch up with Phil once again.
Phil didn’t remember doing the walk before, but some parts did seem familiar to him. Looking back on the blog, he had the walk before, on 8th September 2011!
