The Sandstone Trail - Rock Farm to Birch Heath.

Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 500' At a guess!

This is the third in our walks along the Sandstone trail. It involves part of Walk 4 and probably all of Walk 5 from Carl Rogers' book "Circular Walks on the Sandstone Trail". Perhaps not the most inspiring section of the trail, but I'm sure we'll get the best out of it, providing it doesn't rain!

Mynydd Garthmyn and the Fairy Glen.

This version is taken from Carl Rogers' book "Walking in the Conwy Valley" and only varies a little from the walk that we usually do. Bothy walks are described as being varied walks with stunning views, especially to the West.

Leasowe and New Brighton.

This walk combines two walks from Anthony Annakin-Smith's book "Wirral Walks". This will not be everyones cup of tea, as it is essentially a there and back walk from Leesowe to New Brighton with a few loops to explore parks and possibly the Ditton lane Nature Reserve. Hopefully this will be a good walk to see coastal birds, so bring your binoculars with you if you have any.
This is the same walk that we did last February. High tide is 12-00, so we may not be able to walk on the beach.

Gwydir Forest From Llanwrst.

This walk is taken from Carl Rogers' book "Walking in the Conwy Valley". He describes it is being long and moderately strenuous, mainly along good paths and explores the Eastern sections of the Gwydir Forest with its numerous lakes. Several good viewpoints give panoramic views of the mountains to the West.

The Sandstone Trail - Beeston and Peckforton.

This is the fourth in our walks along the Sandstone trail. It involves Walk 6 and Walk 7 from Carl Rogers' book "Circular Walks on the Sandstone Trail".

This is another good section of the trail and has a good variety of terrains to enjoy.

This is another walk is taken from Terry Marsh's book "Fifty Classic Walks in Lancashire", starting at the picturesque village of Slaidburn. We enjoyed this walk when we last completed it in September 2010, so I thought it would be good to experience it in a different season.

The Sandstone Trail - Burwardsley and Raw Head.

This is the fifth in our walks along the Sandstone trail. It involves Walk 8 and Walk 9 from Carl Rogers' book "Circular Walks on the Sandstone Trail".
Along with the first section from Frodsham, this is probably one of the best sections of the trail as it gains a little more elevation and consequently will give us better views across the Cheshire lowlands towards the hills of Wales and possible towards the Pennines.

Pen Y Gaer, St Celynin's Church and Caer Bach Hillfort.

This walk combines a walk from Carl Rogers' book "Walking in the Conwy Valley" with part of a walk from Dave berry's book "Walks Around Betws-y-coed and the Conwy Valley". Both walks explore the fascinating upland landscape of the Eastern Carneddau and includes visiting a hillfort that we haven't explored before.

Ilam, Thorpe and Musden 28th January 2012

This was a good day for walking, bright and sunny all day. Personally I would have liked a gentle breeze to aid the cooling process!

We set off on the extension first, heading from Blore to the village of Thorpe, and it was on this section that we encountered our first lambs of the year.

It was on the section along the river towards Ilam that we encountered our first mud challenge of the day, but many more to were still to come.

The route around Ilam Hall was delightful.

Lunch was taken at on Upper Musden before heading off towards Calton and Musden Woods. Musden Woods would probably be delightful in Summer conditions, nut not today when the muddy conditions made the 1.5 miles seem to go on for ever.

Once on the path from Upper Musden on the return journey, the section below Hazelton Clump was very pleasant, especially as we could see the car park below.

We arrived back at the car, with tired legs, having had a good day in the outdoors.

Birds seen or heard today included: Chaffinch, Blue tit, Great tit, Greenfinch. Redwing, Fieldfare, Mistle thrush, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Raven, Nuthatch, Mallard, Moorhen, Winter wren, Blackbird and Woodpigeon.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Wilkes Head in Leek, where the Hartington Bitter was at its best and Celia bought he first round! What a pity I was driving!

Thurstaston Common, Stapledon Wood, Caldy and More.

This is a repeat of the walk that we did on 1st January 2010 and combines two walks from Raymond Roberts' booklet "Wirral Walks - the West Wirral Six". This is a relatively easy walk with good views along the way, especially from Thurstaston Hill. We hope to walk back from Caldy to Thursaston along the beach, so bring binoculars with you.

Moel Fenlli, Cwm Blaenant, Moel Llanfair and Coed Plas Y Nant.

This walk combines two walks from Deave Berry's book "Walks on the Clwydian Hills". One walk visits the Moel Fennlli hillfort and athe secluded Cwm Blaenant and the other walk follows Offa's Dyke along high level track around Moel Gwy and Moel Llanfaer before returning via Coed Plas-y-Nant. Good views along most sections of the Offa's Dyke path.

This walk is taken from Carl Rogers's book "Walking in the Conwy Valley". Much of the routes as far as Conwy is the same as we have done on the last two occasions,. It goes through the harbour, follows riverside before passing the school and then climbing to Conwy Mountain along he North Wales path. The return route goes South towards Henryd. It is similar to a route we used many years ago, but appears to misses out much of the road walking. we shall see!

The Sandstone Trail. Frodsham to Manley Green.

This is the first of a series of walks along the Sandstone Trail, which if we complete them all will mean that all 34 miles of the trail will be covered in seven walks.
This walks use two routes described in Carl Rogers's book "Circular Walks Along the Sandstone Trail".
This is probably one of the best sections of the Sandstone Trail, especially the section across Frodsham Hill. Perhaps we can include the Woodhouse Hill hillfort this time. Much of the Sandstone Trail route is the same as the route taken last year, but the return route is different.

A Traeth Levan Round.

This walk is based on Dave Berry's book Walks on the North Wales Coast", although we will choose our own route to get to the Spinnies Nature Reserve. Doing a there and back along the beach will be better than using our usual route through the farm yard! As usual this walk will involve quite a bit of birdwatching, assuming that the weather isn't too cold! Bring your binoculars with you if you have them.

Fron Hen and Bryn Alyn.

This walk uses two walks from Dave Berry's book More Walks in the Clwydian Hill". We have combined these walks on several occasions before and the section over Bryn Aly is always good. It will also give us another opportunity to test our route finding skills through Nercwys Forest!

This walk combines one walk from Carl Rogers's book "Walkng in the Conwy valley with one walk from Dave Berry's book " Walks Around Betws-y-coed and the Conwy Valley". One walk is described as a walk exploring the attractive undulating countryside between two attractive villages with a possible extension to the top of Moel y Gaer. The other walk is described as an easy walk, visiting a Medieval church and a the site of a Roman fort. Both Llanbedr-y-cennin and Caerhun are known locations for Hawfinch. Will be luck this time! Bring binoculars, just in case.

This is the second walk in our Sandstone Trail series.
This walks use two routes described in Carl Rogers's book "Circular Walks Along the Sandstone Trail", although we will only use half of one of the described routes. This is another good section of the trail, with possible a short extensions to visit the viewpoint on Pale Heights.

All Around Ilam.

Two walks are taken from Mark Richards' book "White Peak Walks - Southern Dales". These were the first two walks that I did after recovering from my knee ligament squash accident more than 10 years ago. One walk is described as revealing a beautiful and seldom seen aspect of the Manifold valley with its traverse of Musden Low and return within the sinuous wooded valley of Musden. The second walk explores the country park around Ilam Hall and Ilam village itself. The extension to the walk is somewhat contrived and explores both sides of the Manifold between Ilam and Thorpe. Just to be awkward, we will probably do the extension first!

Delamere and Primrose Hill and More 26th January 2012

Managed to lose my camera (and my monocular) between Gresty Waste Car Park and Home!

Distance: 10.9 miles. Climb: 1239'.

Time: 5 hours 21 minutes. On the move walking average: 2.4 m.p.h. Overall walk average: 2.0 m.p.h.

Group: Martyn, Roger, Gordon, Celia, Paul, Sylvia and Dave J, Time and Carol, Fran and Catherine Murphy.

This turned out to be a good day for walking, with only a couple of short showers in the morning to make some of the group dive for their waterproofs. Thankfully the Sun was shining for much of the day and only occasionally a cool breeze remined us that it was still officially Winter!

The Eddisbury Way was the main path used to link up with this part of the Sandstone Trail, and for me quite a bit of the Eddisbury Way was new. It's always good to encounter new paths.

As might be expected sections of the paths were rather muddy, but not enough to stop us enjoying the walk.

Lunch was conveniently taken at the Brines Brow Picnic Site and some of us managed to find a table in the Sun.

The final part of the Sandstone Trail was through Delamere Forest, mainly along forest tracks, not exactly the most exciting section, but nevertheless still very pleasant walking

Birds seen or heard: Black-billed magpie, Raven, Jackdaw, European robin, Blue tit, Great tit, Nuthatch, Blackbird, House sparrow, Long-tailed tit, Common buzzard and Eurasian jay.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Farmers Arms at Kelsall where Weetwood Bitter and Weetwood Old Dog were the brew sampled. This hostelry must have changed landlords, it was pleasantly warm when we went in!

Rowen, Llanbedr-y-cennin and Caerhun for Some 21st January 2012

Time: 4 hours 16 minutes. On the move walking average: 2.0 m.p.h. Overall average: 1.5 m.p.h. (1.9), [2.3].

This wasn't the best of days for waking, strong at time gale force winds and far too much rain, so much that two of us decided to miss out the Caerhun part of the walk and head back to the shelter of the car at Rowen. However Martyn and Roger did see the bird of the day whilst they sheltered in the car, two Red kites came over the woods very close to the car, giving us superb views even without binoculars.

This isn't a walk that I will wish to remember too often, poor weather, lost the path, ripped my trousers, didn't see any Hawfinches (except on notice boards) and didn't complete the walk as planned.

Lunch was taken in the entrance of Llanbedr-y-cennin church, where we managed to sit down as we sheltered from the rain. The church itself was open, but we were too lazy to go and collect the key.

Birds seen or heard today included: Red kite, Blue tit, Great tit, Herring gull, Common crow, Jackdaw, Chaffinch, Mistle thrush, Common blackbird, Bullfinch, European robin and Woodpigeon.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Britannia Inn, the Lees Biter was good, but unfortunately we were at the cold end of the room without the fire, so we didn't stay for long!

The return journey between Colwyn Bay and Llanduklas was delayed as a pot-hle had appeared in the middle of the carriageway and two Police vehicles blocked the way until it had been repaired. Thankfully we only had to wait about half an hour before we were allowed to continue.

The day didn't end well either, Everton drew, Liverpool were beaten by Bolton and Chester were beaten by Hednesford. At least we know one Bolton family that will be happy withe the Liverpool result!

The weather forecast fro "Accuweather" today was spot on in terms of the timing of five minute showers, although it didn't ever feel quite as cold as their predicted -2 degrees Celsius. Thankfully we had more sunshine too!

This walk is always a bit of an up and down walk with plenty of opportunities to get boots and trouser legs in need of of some TLC, today was no exception, but today the worst bits usually encountered didn't live up to their reputation!

We had good views for most of the day, including the opportunity to debate the location of some cooling towers somewhere between Liverpool Cathedrall and Fiddlers Ferry!

Lunch was taken, rather unexpectedly, just outside Maeshafn (Fran and Tito could have joined us had then known!).

Thankfully today we got it right through Nercwys Forest, better than last time. However we didn't quite complete the walk as described as we approached Eryrys along the wrong road. This was in reality a shorty cut, but no-one seemed to object!

Birds seen or heard today included: Mistle thrush, Blue tit, Great , Blackbird, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Carrion crow, European robin, Jackdaw, Nuthatch, Raven, Kestrel, Common buzzard and Black-billed magpie.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Glasfryn where Cwrw Eryry (Snowdonia Ale by Bragdy Mws Plwsw Cyf (as it always does) , went down particularly well, however the prices at the Galsfryn didn't, but they never do!

The weather today was forecast to give us bright and sunny spells, a gentle wind but on the cool side. In reality we had better than that, we seemed to be in bright sunshine all day, but it didn't stop us getting cold fingers when we stopped to use are binoculars. Light conditions were superb and the colours of many of the birds stood out.

Walking on days like this is a rich blessing, a joy and privilage to able to be out and about, taking in all of these fantastic vistas. This was a day when a slow speed was essential, so that we didn't miss anything. A good thing really, as I for one am finding strolling along more to my liking than setting a brisk pace.

Lunch was taken quite early, sitting by a stone wall on the lower slopes near Yr Ogaf, basking in the warm sunshine as we enjoyed the last of this year's fruit cake.

Bird sightings started well with a Goldcrest showing well in a bush on the edge of a wood less than 200 yards from the car park in Llanfairfechan. Passing the marshes, the Sun was shining brightly, making the colours on the Teal and Wigeon stand out. Later on in Abergwyngregyn Tree sparrows were added to the list. On the return journey about 80 Pale-bellied Brent geese were the highlight, although flocks of swirling Dunlin is always delightful, especially as the Sun caches their underside making them appear to sparkle. Impressive numbers of Common curlew and Oystercatcher roosting at high tide were a wonder to see.

Birdse seen or heard today included:Goldcrest, European robin, Mallard, Canada goose, Mute swan, Black-headed gull, Herring gull, Great black-backed gull, Common redshank, Oystercatcher, Common teal, Wigeon, Chaffinch, Dunnock, House sparrow, Tree sparrow, Pied wagtail, Dinlin, Shelduck, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Raven, Common buzzard, Nuthatch, Song thrush, Blue tit, Great tit, Long-tailed tit, Greenshank, Pintail, Lapwing, Common curlew, Brent goose, Woodpigeon, Blackbird, Common starling and Rook.

We arrived back at the car, tired, but knowing we had superb day.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Britannia Inn, where a couple of pints of Lees Bitter was enough to revive tired limbs and complaining knees.

Sandstone Trail Frodsham - Manley 12th January 2012

After week without a walk, it was good to put on our walking boots again, especially when the weather was so good. Admittedly it was a little on the breezy side to start with, but the Sun was shining all day, and in places where we were shielded from the wind, it was almost too warm to be wearing Winter gear!
The first section of the walk along the sandstone edge from Frodsham Hill to the Woodhouse Hillfort gave us the best views of the day, especially across the Mersey towards Liverpool Cathedral, clearly seen in the distance.
Today we made the slight detour to visit Woodhouse Hillfort, although Phil had to persuade us that where we were walking was part of the ramparts!
Heading out of Manley with lunch very much in our thoughts, Roger managed to fall off a curb, twist his ankle and draw blood on his elbow!
Lunch was taken, just as we entered Delamere Forest. Roger revived with food and some of Martyn's fruit cake and with his elbow plastered up, hobbled on to complete the walk, whether he was able to stand up for an hour singing in the choir this evening is another matter.
After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Helter Skelter in Frodsham, where Red Willow Headless bitter went down well..
Birds seen or heard today included: Carrion crow, Woodpigeon, European robin, Blackbird, Black-billed magpie, Eurasian jay, Kestrel, Winter wren, Grey wagtail, Common buzzard, Chaffinch, Great tit, House sparrow, Coal tit, Common crossbill, and Siskin (probably the bird of the day as we didn't see one on last year's walks).

A little on the warm side for this time of the year and three members of the group were tempted to wear shorts. Only one completed the walk with legs exposed to the sun throughout the walk!
The weather was kind until we had crossed Thurstaston Hill and were heading for Royden Country Park. As we approached the rain started and was torrential by the time we reached the Visitor Centre and Car Park. Thankfully the cafe was closed and we were able to take advantage of the canopy while we had lunch. Martyn provided everyone with a piece of rum preserved fruit cake to fortify them for the rest of the trek.
After lunch the master chef and his helper decided to take the shortest route back to the car, on the pretext that he needed to check the meat was OK, have put it in the oven before joining the walk.
The rest of us headed for Stapleton Wood. Half way through Stapleton Wood, three of the group decided to find their own way back to the car, but thankfully were reunited withe the rest of the party at Caldy Church.
The last part was either completed along the Wirral Way or along the beach. The latter was the best choice for those with binoculars as the incoming tide pushed the feeding waders closer and closer towards us.
Birds seen or heard today included: European robin, Winter wren, Chaffinch, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Black-billed magpie, Blue tit, Great tit, Long-tailed tit, Moorhen, Common coot, House sparrow, Common buzzard, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Oystercatcher, Knot, Curlew, Bar-tailed godwit, Dunlin, Great cormorant and Common redshank.
After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Wheatsheaf at Raby, where Brinstage Trappers Hat Bitter went down well.
A good walk, which would have been even better had we not had to test out the waterproof properties of our gear!

Raring to go!

Walking along the Leet.

Escaping from the "breeze" on the summit of Moel Fammau.

The final section of the new (to us) descent.

Walk stats: Distance: 9.6 miles. Climb: 2158' (Taken from when we did the same route in 2010). On the GPS today mine came to 3057' and Roger's 3500', obviously they were both wind assisted.

Time: 5 hours 22 minutes. On the move walking average: 2.2 m.p.h. Overall walk average: 1.8 m.p.h.

The weather forecast wasn't particularly good and we were expecting lots of showers and high winds giving real feel temperatures just above freezing.

Thankfully the only real rain we encountered was after lunch, and the only challenging wind was as we approached the summit of Moel Fammau. It helped us on the ascent, but around the Jubilee Tower itself, the wind was so strong that the sensible ones didn't even attempt to climb it! Which two went to the top? Alas there is no photographic record of their feat!

This walk is always a good walk with its easy start along the Leet and the steady climb, eventually bringing us to our lunch spot just beyond the top reservoir.

By 12-20 we were on our way again, bracing the wind and the rain as we headed for the Offa's Dyke footpath.

Sue and Michel decided to take a lower level route that contoured around Mole Fammau before heading back to Loggerheads.

The rest of us gritted our teeth, determine to reach the summit. This done, we all passed the trig point, to follow a new to us path that headed almost in a straight line towards Brithdir Mawr. This is good route, but quite steep in places, but would be excellent on a dry, calm day!

Birds seen or heard today included: Carrion crow, Nuthatch, Fieldfare, Redwing, Chaffinch, Blue tit, Great tit, Coal tit, Jackdaw, Raven, Bullfinch, European robin, Blackbird and Long-tailed tit.

The most spectacular bird seen as we approached Moel Fammau, turned out to be bits of bracken fifty feet above us, twisting and turning as they were caught by the ever icreasing "breeze".

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Glasfryn in Mold, where Hawkhead bitter and Weetwood's Cheshire Cat went down well.

A good walk, despite being tired and weather beaten.

Just in case anyone in the walking group has not yet heard, Sue Pearson's mother died on the evening of Friday 2nd December 2011.
I know Sue, Dave, Sarah, Elen and the rest of the family are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

The funeral will take place on Monday 19th December 2011 at 12-00 at Upton Church of the Holy Ascension on Church Lane

Congratulations to Emma and Dan on the birth of their son, Henry Alexander on 20th November 2011, and to Paul and Yvonne on becoming grandparents for the fifth time.

This walk combines two walks taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Clwydian Hills". This area of the Clwydians has so much to offer, and Moel arthur and Penycloddiau is particularly good. On a good day the views from both hill forts is superb.

This walk uses two walks from Dave Berry's book"Walks Around Y Bala and Penlylyn". The main walk explores the varied countryside North of Bala, including the wild remote upland around Moel Emoel. The second walk allows us to explore Bala itself and discover some of its history.

Around Rhuddlan and the Clwyd Estuary.

Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 450'.
Start: Marine Lake Car park off Westbourne Avenue at the West end of Rhyl.

A low level walk that we always do at this time of the year. Hopefully this time we will be able to use paths on both sides of the river! A good time of the year to see some of a Winter visiting ducks and geese, so bring your binoculars with you if you have them. as last year we will probably make a detour to go round the Brickfield Pond Nature Reserve. We usually do this walk in anti-clock-wise direction, but this time we will as described in the route description, but this time we will attempt the riverside part of the walk in the opposite direction. A chance for us to use our map reading skills without being distracted by any descriptions!

This is a walk that we often do on a Thursday as well. The first part of the walk is along the beach, tide permitting, and return through the golf course and sand dunes.
This is a good time of the year to see Wintering ducks and possibly Snow buntings on the shore, so bring binoculars if you can.
The short walk to former site of the bird hide at the Point of Ayr will be completed, legs and weather permitting!

Limestone, Lead, Halkyn Mountain and Our Christmas Meal at the Britannia Inn.

Distance: 6 miles. Climb:600'.

A short walk over very familiar territory, so that we are back at the Britannia Inn just before 13-00 p.m.
Little needs to be said about this walk as most of us have done it before. There may be a little improvisation on the return route once we have reached the trig point on Halkyn Mountain.

Two walks are taken from Mark Richards' book "White Peak Walks - Southern Dales". These were the first two walks that I did after recovering from my knee ligament squash accident more than 10 years ago. One walk is described as revealing a beautiful and seldom seen aspect of the Manifold valley with its traverse of Musden Low and return within the sinuous wooded valley of Musden. The second walk explores the country park around Ilam Hall and Ilam village itself. The extension to the walk is somewhat contrived and explores both sides of the Manifold between Ilam and Thorpe. Just to be awkward, we will probably do the extension first!

Start: Alongside the Marine Lake at West Kirby as near to the sailing club (the one with real yachts in the compound) as you can get. Grid ref: SJ21468600.

This walk is based on a walk by Raymond Roberts from his booklet "Wirral Six". However we will extendit to include the Gilroy Nature Reserve before heading up Grange Hill. If we want to extend the walk we can continue along the shore as far as Hoylake, tide permitting! Another good walk for birdwatching, so bring your binoculars with you.

Moel Fammau From Loggerheads Memorial.

Distance: 10-11 miles. Climb: 1600'.

Start: Parking area on the A494 opposite the "We Three Loggerheads" Memorial Stone. On the left just after passing the shop at Cadole. Grid ref: SJ20246265.

Leave Chester at 09-00 a.m.

This walk starts by heading above the limestone quarries before dropping down to the leat. Eventually reaching a road that heads towards Cilcain. Our route takes a short cut along a path above fishing ponds before taking monor road past the waterworks at Cilcain. Just after the upper resrvoir our route swings South, skirting around Moel Dywyll before rising to the summit of Moel Arthur. Our return route uses paths running South of ffrith Mountain and Rhyd yr Eilun, before passing through the Loggerheads Country Park car park and Visitor Centre and the last climb up the road to the car park.

What a glorious sunny day this turned out to be, not the dull overcast weather forecast. We arrived at the Marine Lake becalmed and the Sun shining. This was more like a Spring day than a Winter day, and we should have been in shorts, alas I listened to the forecast, but at least I didn't have to wear a fleece or waterproof!
The Marine Lake provided the birds of the day with two male Goldeneye and close up views of Turnstone, although perhaps the sight of the day was the swirling flocks of Dunlin as they twisted and turned over the water's edge.
It was such a good day that we extended the walk along the beach beyond Red Rocks as far as the Lifeboat Station at Hoylake, before cutting inland through the houses and eventually arriving at the Gilroy Nature Reserve.
Lunch was taken at the Grange Hill memorial where the views towards Hilbre and beyond to North Wales were superb. In the other direction, Leasowe lighthouse and the cathedrals in Liverpool could easily be seen.
Once again Roger produced some of Margaret's excellent Mince Pies for everyone, another reminder that it really was December and not June!
The final extension was across Caldy Hill from the Beacon and back along the Wirral Way, with the final few hundred yards back along the beach to the Hoylake Yacht Club.

Overall a fantastic walk, a contender for the walk of the year!

Around Halkyn Mountain - A Christmas Lunch Walk 15th December 2011

Once again we had the best of the weather, a couple of showers that didn't last too long. The only wind we experienced was on the top of Halkyn Mountain, and even then it wasn't very strong and just a little on the cool side for one or two of the group.

Good views were seen from the trig point on Halkyn Mountain, especially across the Dee estuary to Liverpool and towards the Clwydian hills with their slight dusting of snow.

A bonus today was the absence of any really muddy sections and when some of the group were wondering if they could last 'till lunch at 13-30, Tim came to the rescue with some excellent Danish pastries for everyone, just enough to revive those that had started to flag a little.

Back at the Britania Inn, we had about an hour to chat with a drink in the bar before going into the conservatory for the Christmas lunch. The Lunch went down well with everyone, although Phil's "Yorkshire" pudding looked rather sad. Everyone was give a free mince pie and coffee at the end of the meal. A nice gesture as it wasn't expected.

Another bonus for me was that the rest of the group wouldn't let me pay! Thanks everyone.

Down to two walking today, but it had the bonus that Martyn had a few more of Margaret's excellent mince pies to enjoy!

A bright and sunny day, but on the cool side, much better than lashing rain and gale force winds that greeted us on Thursday.

The Marine Lake had been allowed to drain and quite a bit of mud was exposed, consequently there great numbers of Lapwing, Oystercatchers and quite a few Redshank too. The star birds on the Marine Lake were the 12 Red breasted mergansers.

This walk was largely on the North Wales Path and new tarmacked paths around nature reserves, so we arrived back at the ca with clean boots, always a bonus.

Paths on both sides of the Afon Clwyd were open and we completed a small extension along the North Wales path to the coast and back around by the harbour.

Overall a good walk, especially if you like bird watching too!

Rhuddlan and the Clwyd Estuary 8th December 2011

Only Martyn, Roger, Gordon, Annie H, Sue and Michel arrived at the Marine Lake car park at Rhyl. We sat in the car for about half an hour, hoping that the rain would stop and the gale force wind would abate a little. The rain got worse and the wind got stronger so it was a unanimous decision to abandon the walk and head for home and for me soup and corned beef butties for tea!

Today we had sunshine and showers all day, thankfully none of the showers lasted very long and were never enough to wet us! However the same couldn't be said for conditions underfoot as we grossed quite a few boggy and at times muddy fields and a ford that was a little deeper than we really wanted! The wind was a little on the cool side, so winter gear and gloves were appropriate for most of the walk!

Nevertheless this was a good walk with the light and views constantly changing. We also had the occasional rainbow appearing.

The Afon Tryweryn was quite full and flowing quite rapidly, ideal for canoeing, but to our surprise two Dippers were constantly in and out of the water. In fact one of them seemed to be swimming on the surface of the water before diving under it, and repeating it time and time again, behaviour that neither Dave or myself have ever seen before. This deep fast flowing water we thought was not "Dipper territory".

Lunch was taken alongside Llyn Tegid, where we took advantage of the many seats provided.

The underground quarries Craig Y Fron quarries were the most interesting feature on the after lunch part of the walk. The limestone quarried being used to build Capel Tegid and many other buildings that we saw on our history tour of Bala later in the walk.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Bridge Inn at Pontybodkin, where two good brews from the Cottage brewery were on offer.

What should I wear? Arriving at the Llangwyfan Forestry car park with temperatures around 5 Celsius and a cool wind, I opted for the "Paramo" gear. It was the decision, although at one point when we were in the shelter of Moel Arthur I did have my doubts!
Anyway this turned out to be yet another great day weather wise to be walking in the Clwydiands. Lots of others thought so too, but as far as we were concerned they were all going in the wrong direction!
The views all day were superb, not perfect, but it was all there, the Berwyns, the Moelwyns, the Snowdon group, the Glyders, the Carneddau , the Great Orme and later the Anglican cathedral in Liverpool, not forgetting the Clwydians North towards Moel y Parc and South towards Mole Fammau.
What a blessing it is to be able to walk in these hills on a day like this. Even the variety of birds seen and heard today were a bonus as was seeing Dave Evans dream house being near completion, although alas for Dave it is someone else that is completing it!
Lunch was enjoyed by the cars at Llangwyfan Forestry Car Park, before setting off on the second part of the walk. Both walks taken today were walked in a clockwise direction, opposite to the usual route. It almost seemed like a new walk and has much to commend it.

This years Christmas Meal together will take place at the Britanni Inn at Halkyn on the 15th December 2011.
The menu offered is as follows:

If you let me know whether you can make it and give me your order, I can collate them and give numbers and orders to the Britannia Inn as soon as I can. I want to hand in he completed meals list on Thursday 8th December. I would appreciate all orders to be given to me by Wednesday 8th December.
As usual we will park at the Britannia Inn (about 09-30 a.m.) have a walk of about 6 miles and be back at the Britannia for about 13-00. Meal 13-30 onwards.
If you can't make the walk, but can make the meal that's OK too.

Bakewell, Chatsworth Park and the River Wye 26th November 2011

Weather was expected to be mainly on the dull side, with a little Sun and possibly some showers. This was pretty well what we got, but the showers were merely a dampness in the air and didn't warrant a stop to put on waterproofs! In the main views were good, but today some of the birds that we saw were the highlight of the day.

It started well as we descended the track to Elsenor, when we saw a Treecreeper (they've been quite elusive this year, then we saw a Goosander on the Derwent as we approached Chatsworth Park and further down the river we had good views of a Grey wagtail (spotted first by Celia, that must be a first!), and later on we saw four Common crossbills at Carlton Lees ( first for the blog and definately the birds of the day). In addition we saw a large number of Red deer on the slopes above the river at Chatsworth Park.

Birds seen or heard today included: Common crossbill, Collared dove, Black-billed magpie, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Rook, Winter wren, Blue tit, Great tit, Chaffinch, Black-headed gull, Mallard, Canada goose, Common coot, Moorhen, Tufted duck, Grey wagtail, Long-tailed tit, House sparrow and possiblt a Sparrowhawk.

After walk drinks were enjoyecd by all but one at the Wilkes Head in Leek where Hartington Bitter was the icing on the cake after a good walk. Sadly Dolly, the landlords dog, is no longer with us.

I must remember not to visit Bakewell this near Christmas, parking was horrendous and if one car owner hadn't moved his car, I think we would have still been there!

St. Dyfnog's Well, Llwyn Woods, Denbigh Castle and Goblin Fields 24th November 2011

A very select group walking today too many have other things to do!

A good day weather wise with temperatures well into the shorts walking zone! Only one of the group lived up to that forecast and wore shorts!

This was a more varied walk than you might expect around the Ystrad and Clwyd, but today it really was superb. Difficult section of the walk encountered in the past had been cleared and new stiles put in.

The walk started well with a pair of Dippers showing well along the river.
When we Arvie at Llanrhaeadr, the St. Dyfnog's church, the church was open, so were all able to appreciate the magnificent Jesse window.
Lunch was taken early, just before we crossed the former golf course, as we couldn't envisage a suitable lunch spot later on.
Crossing fields towards Ystrad arm we even saw daises in flower!
A good walk despite those steps up to the castle!

This walk combines two walks taken from Dave Berry's book "More Walks On the Clwydian Hills". Both walks we have done several times, but not for some time. One walk is described as a delightful walk exploring the valley and foothills of the Clwydian Hills and the other walk as exploring the attractive and varied countryside overlooking the Wheeler Valley. Perhaps this time we will actually go round Pwll Gwyn Woods!

This a good walk that explores both sides of Moel y Parc and Pencloddiau. Expect superb views on a clear and frosty day.

We will extend the walk by starting at the Tockholes Visitor Centre Car park next to the Royal Arms. We have done most of the walk before, but not together. We will have plenty of opportunity to test how waterproof our boots are, especially as we cross Great Hill and Spitler's Edge, peat moorland at its best!

These two walks are taken from Dave Berry's book "Walks in the Vale of Clwyd". The main walk explore the attractive and varied countryside between Llanrhaeadr and Brookhouse. The highlight on the walk is the Jesse window in the medieval church at Llanrhaeadre. The second walk takes us on a "green" approach to Denbigh Castle.

Yet another good day for walking, not too hot and not too cold and a good deal of sunshine. In fact the only time that Martyn put his fleece on all day was when he went into the Bridge Inn for pint!

The described Mynydd Mynyllod walk was a little odd, so we decided to to do our own route for the part around Mynydd Mynyllod and in fact we did a bit of heather hopping to reach its summit for the first time and possibly the last!

Although we have done this walk a few times, much of the route today seemed new to me. I'm hoping that it was because we did some of the walk in the opposite direction to the described walk, rather tha yet another "senior" moment!

We had lunch back at Llanderfel, taking advantage of the bench provided, but alas not the PC that have been closed for the last couple of years!

The only excitement of the afternoon walk was to be buzzed by a bright red helicopter as we walked along the "Queen's Path back to Llanderfel.
Birds seen or heard today included: Blue tit, Great tit, House sparrow, Dunnock, Carrion crow, Raven, Woodpigeon, Collared dove, Jackdaw, European robin, Chaffinch, Nuthatch, Great spotted woodpecker, Grey heron, Mallard and Common buzzard.

In all a good walk, appropriate for short wearing conditions in the middle of November!

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Bridge Inn at Pontybodkin, where the beer of choice today was Brains bitter. Sadly only the dying embers were left in the hearth, I was glad that I'd put my fleece on!

Was this a shorts day or not? I didn't get any support/like thinkers until Tito joined us for the second part of the walk! I still think I made the right decision!
Another good day for walking, although it was somewhat blustery as we approached the summits of Moel Hiraddug and Graig Fawr, but on days like this inh November we should be very thankfull.
On much of the walk, once we attained any elivation we had good views., somewhat hazy, but enough to gladen the heart! Others may not agree, and I admit to be a little biased, but the coast along North Wales and Anglesey is unbeatable!
Thanks to Annie, we all enjoyed chocolate biscuits in celebration of her birthday.
This was the first time that I have been past the entrance to the well known "Fish Mine", definitely a special bonus for me.

Great Hill, Spitler's Edge and White Coppice from Tockholes 12th November 2011

Another good day for walking, warm sunshine, little wind and not even a threat of any wet stuff (except for what was under our boots!

The car park was the best place for seeing birds today with 6 or 7 different species being seen. We set of from Tockholes along a woodland path that was decked with autumnal coloured leaves, a delightful way to start the walk.

After crossing the Belmont Road the "path" across the boggy peat moor to Great Hill was stretched ahead of us. Whilst none of us experienced "the peaty clutches ..... and waist deep embrace" of Terry Marsh's description, Martyn did experience a closer encounter of the peat than he he really wanted!

Lunch was taken alongside the access track to Lower Hempshaw's. We could just about see Rivington Pike tower. As we approached White Coppice we started to see more and more people. The route from White Coppice to Great Hill past Drinkwaters seemed very popular with walkers and fell runners.

as we descended Great Hill after the second visit, the Darwen tower could clearly be seen with its new look, making us realise that we were luck enough to climb to the top of the tower on last year's visit.

Birds seen or heard today included: Nuthatch, Blue tit, Great tit, Coal tit, Greenfinch, Long-tailed tit, European robin, Tree sparrow, Carrion crow, Raven, Kestrel, Pied wagtail, Common pheasant, Eurasian jay, Meadow pipit and Mallard.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Royal Arms at Tockholes. The beers that went down well were Hopstar (Darwen brewery) and Glen top (Rossendale brewery). It's good to see that this gem of a pub is in the Camra 2012 Good Beer Guide.

Overall a superb day witha walk and pint to match!

Penycloddiau and Moel y Parc 9th November 2011

A few regulars from the group were missing today, apparently with "better offers"(reasons)!

What another glorious day for walking this turned out to be. The Sun was shining all day and the none of the forecast rain materialized. Pleasantly warm throughout the walk, T-shirts and shorts still he order of the day, well at least for one or two of us!

The distance views of Snowdonia from Moel Siabod, Snowdon and the Glyders (especially Tryfan) could all be identified on the horizon. further round the Little Orme could be seen as well as the nearby coast from Prestatyn to Rhyl and beyond.

This delightful walk will certainly be repeated in the not so distant future.

What a glorious day for walking this turned out to be. Mostly sunshine and very little wind. Still in shorts, and at times over-heating, and it's November!

In the morning Llyn Tegid was like a mirror and seeing the hills and sky reflected in the still water just takes the breath away.
This really was a day to gently stroll and take in the views, remembering what a privilege it is to be able to walk on days like this.

This was an up and down walk, but today the varied terrain and the views were reward enough for the efforts required on the upward sections.

Someone had a senior moment and forgot to bring his camera, but thanks to Michel's mobile all wasn't lost!

Still shorts weather, and despite the varied weather forecasts we in reality had very little rain.

The highlight of the day was having Richard with us for part of the walk. Hopefully it won't be long before he joins us again.

This was an unusual walk in that the group members varied from 9, then 8, then we split into a group of 3 and 5 and then finished with a group of 10!

friendly dog owners, a runner, a couple of local ladies in Caerwys and a white haired lady, probably a similar age to several of the group all engaged pleasantries with us.

This was and up and down walk, completed, not quite as planned or as quick as we would have like, but we completed the walk, pleasantly tired and looking forward to the Britannia Inn and a pint of Lees Bitter (well at least one was!)

All Around the Great Orme 29th October 2011

Walk stats: Distance: 9.6 miles. Climb: 1100' (estimated as GPS reading of over 2000' must have been wind assisted!).

On a day when I thought that I was "Billy No Mates", Roger came to the rescue on Thursday and we decided on a walk around the Great Orme. (Margaret was making a wedding cake and wanted Roger well away from the kitchen!).

Despite the dodgy weather forecast, this turned out to be a superb day for walking, a little blustery at times, but otherwise fine. Shorts were definitely the order of the day, but a fleece was too, but thankfully waterproofs remained in the rucksack.

On this occasion we walked along the toll road from West Shore to Happy Valley, and were amazed to to meet so many other people walking along this route.

However the most memorable part of this walk was to see a Short-eared owl fly within ten feet of us and in view for quite some time. After that I didn't care whether it rained or not!

As a change we took the path from Happy Valley straight to St. Tudno's Church,a and for the first time went into the church, after being warned to keep the outer door closed to keep out birds, sheep and goats, a literal rather than a Biblical reference!

Throughout the walk the ever changing light made sure that views were constantly changing, particularly towards Puffin Island and Anglesey.

Birds seen or heard today included: Jackdaw, Carrion crow, Raven, Kestrel, Herring gull, Mute swan, Oystercatcher, Eurasian curlew, Meadow pipit, Chaffinch, Great black-backed gull, Mallard, House sparrow, Goldfinch and Great cormorant.

I'm glad that I didn't listen to the weather forecast prediction that it would feel like 6 or 7 Celsius, if I'd put my winter gear on I'd have been cooking! Thankfully shorts were the order of the day and waterproofs were needed for a few minutes after lunch, although there was a dampness around throughout the walk.

This was a very pleasant walk, almost a stroll, with plenty of birds around to grab our attention. We frequently had good views of the Clwydians around Moel Arthur, bu the higher sections of the range were often in cloud.

Pen-y-Bwlch Gwyn.

Start: Pont y Bala Car Park. Grid ref: SH929362.

This is another walk from Dave Berry's book"Walks Around Y Bala and Penlylyn".
He describes it as a walk through the hills north of Bala. It skirts a prominent hill called Moel Emoel. but perhaps we may be able to reach its summit! The open hill section he advises is for "experienced walkers only and should be avoided in poor visibility!" Last time we didn't read the small print and as it suggested route finding at the North end of the walk isn't easy, especially when the paths aren't well used across the moors. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us and we will have good views all day!

The Big Moor walk is taken from Robert Harris' book "Walks In Ancient Peak District". This walk is a superb walk along mainly gritstone edges and gives plenty of opportunity to search out a few sites of historical interest. These include Stoke Flats Stone Circle, Hurkling Stone, Swine Sty Enclosure and Swine Sty. Some of them aren't easy to recognise even when you know that the grid reference is right!

The extension is 2-3 miles and allows us to traverse across Baslow Edge back to the car park.

The Moel-y-Crio use only part of second walk, so we will have to take care that we are vigilant as after going through Moel-y-Crio, otherwise we will be extendeding the walk more than we want to!

This walk uses three walks from Dave Barry's book "Walks Around Y Bala and Penllyn". He describes them as being fascinating walks featuring a hill fort and exploring both sides of the Afon Dyfrdwy Valley, a chance to explore again the stunning and varied scenery South of Llanuchllyn.

Another superb day for walking, lots of sunshine and a pleasant cool wind to keep us refreshed (well me really), but at least two of us had bare arms and legs by the end of the day!

At one point we thought that we were on two completely new walks, as the walk progressed we realised that aspects of the second walk were very familiar and the stepping stones reminded of a previous occasion when Dave J stood in the middle of the stream to assist Celia crossing over the stepping stones.

Once again the views all day were magnificent, especially the ones towards the Arans, the Arrenigs and even towards Llyn Tegid.

This was a good day for Fieldfare, they seemed to be everywhere and there were lots of Common buzzards too!

As we approached Llanuwchllyn, I decided that I had had enough walking for one day and declined the extra walk "2" mile walk to Caer Gai and headed back to the car.

Birds seen or heard today included: House sparrow, Blackbird, Chaffinch, Fieldfare, Kestrel, Common buzzard, Black-billed magpie, Eurasian jay, Mistle thrush, Reed bunting, Common snipe, Winter wren, Goldfinch, Long-tailed tit, Jackdaw, Carrion crow, Raven and Nuthatch.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Bridge Inn at Pontybodkin where a brew from the Cottage Brewery went down well. The young lady serving at the bar was delightful too, not the same person encountered on a previous occasion.

What a glorious day for walking, my only regret was that I believed the weather forecasters and didn't wear shorts!

A shower at first , but sunshine for the rest of the day, and even the breeze was pleasantly coolling at least for me!

Superb views views throughout, especially when we were looking Nortyh and Liverpool's Anglican Catherdral was so dominant on the syline.

Lunch was taken slightly early, just as the school bell at Berth Ddu went, but it was still probably a betterspot than on the top of Moel y Gaer.

After lunch it was like a pleasant stroll and in the Sun, topped up with a superb pint of Lees at the Britannia Inn.

What a glorious Autumn day for walking, cool at first and pleasantly warm and Sunny for the rest of the day. A day for strolling along the edges taking in the superb views, unfortunately hundreds of others thought it was a good idea too! At least when we got as far as White Edge he hoards thinned out a little.

The highlight of the day was hearing Red stags roaring on Big Moor. We had had good views, particularly the small heard just below us on White Moor. In all we saw about 20 Red deer, but only 3 stags.

Birds sen or heard today included: Blue tit, Chaffinch, Meadow pipit, Common starling, Carrion crow, Rook, Jackdaw and Sparrowhawk.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Eyre Arms in Calver where the Banks Bitter was the one sampled. We sat out at the front of the pub, as Indy wasn't allowed in the grassed beer garden at the back!

The Gop, Golden Groves and Sea Views 13th October 2011

Weather wise this was much better than some of the weather forecasts given. In fact it was in the main very pleasant for walking, not too sunny or warm and whenever there was a breeze it really did feel good!

The only difficulty encountered was just outside Gwaenysgor when three geese tried to stop us going past. Thankfully for most of us Tito, our Italian friend saw them off. They must have known that his interest in birds all revolves around the cooking pot!

This walk turned out to have one or two things that we didn't expect. The first of which was finishing lunch before mid-day. This was just because it was the most convenient spot on the walk, not a time precedence for the future!

Distance views were a little misty, we couldn't quite see Blackpool tower today!

The weather was a little better than we could have hoped for, not much sun, but at least we only experienced a little dampness in the air occasionally. If anything it was somewhat warm and humid and the low temperatures forecast didn't materialise.
Route finding across the moors wasn't particularly easy, even though visibility was good. Distant views weren't good, although we did see Llyn Celyn and the unmentionable peak in the distance!
It wasn't on the route, but we did cross the summit Pen-y-Bwlch Gwyn before returning to the path on the route description.
We had lunch looking South-east down the Nant Cefn-coch valley, hoping that whatever we were sitting on was waterproof!
The return route after lunch was quite challenging to start with as the paths on the map didn't seem to exist on the ground, but eventually a more obvious path did appear as Llyn Maen Blas came into view.
An enjoyable walk, boosted by the early morning victory for Wales in the RU World Cup.
Birds seen or heard today included: Blue tit , Great tit, Long-tailed tit, Carrion crow, European robin, Mistle thrush, Jackdaw, Kestrel, Rock dove, Common buzzard, Eurasian jay, Black-billed magpie, House sparrow, Red kite and Dave's Treecreeper!

Overall a very pleasant day for walking, a five minute shower was all we had to endure and the strong winds weren't cold. Nevertheless only one member of the group walked in shorts and a T-shirt for most of the walk!

Lunch was taken at the Pen-y-Ball monument, but attempts to hide from the cooling wind wasn't too successful. Hot drinks in flasks were welcome!

The views from the trig-point on Pen-y-Ball Top, were superb, particularly towards the Wirral.

Birds seen or heard today included: House sparrow, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Black-billed magpie, Common buzzard, Common pheasant, Woodpigeon and Goldfinch.

Chinley Churn and South Head 3rd October 2011

Another good day for an afternoon stroll. Sunnier than expected and with a superb cool wind later on. Views were good throughout, once we had gained a little height. Contrasting scenery from small gritstone quarries and rolling grassy hill tops to lowland pastures and the conurbation of Chinley in the valley below.

Birds seen or heard today were few and far between but included: Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Meadow pipit, Black-billed magpie and Wheatear.
Overall a very pleasant walk, especially as we had the countryside to ourselves, only when we crossed the Hayfield Road did see any other people and they were in their cars.

After walk celebrations were made with a meal at a Indian restaurant in Sale. For once were early enough to take advantage of their "Early bird menu".

Craig-y-Don to Llandrillo-yn-Rhos via the Little Orme 1st October 2011

Down to two and with temperatures forecast to be in the mid-twenties Celsius, I decided to switch the walk to a coastal walk in the hope that w might get a breeze off the sea. Thankfully for most of the day we had quite a bit of cloud cover and so didn't suffer the direct sunshine for long periods, and when we did a cooling breeze helped us. There were lots of people about, but we only saw two people and two dogs swimming in the sea. The highlight of the day was seeing about fifty Ringed plovers on the pebbles at Penryn Bay.

Lunch was taken just outside Llandrillo-yn-Rhos where we could take advantage of one of the benches provided by the Rhos on Sea Community. We really did feel like a couple of old wrinklies strolling down the promenade and having a drink out of our flasks as we sat on the bench overlooking the sea. The only thing missing was the newspaper! Befitting our new image, we had more that 20 minutes over lunch!

Birds seen or heard today included: Rook, Herring gull, Great black-backed gull, Lesser black-backed gull, Wheatear, Red-billed chough, Ringed plover, Jackdaw, Carrion crow, House sparrow, Great cormorant, Black-billed magpie, Pied wagtail, Meadow pipit and Feral pigeon.

We arrived back at the car to see cars parked on both sides of the road all the way into Llandudno and the whole place looking very busy. A good day for the cafes and ice-cream vendors in Llandudno.

Overall a very pleasant "stroll" on the coast, just right for a hot day like today.

Dunham Massey, Lymm and the Bridgewater Canal 29thSeptember 2011

A gloriously sunny day for walking one would think, well it was before lunch when it wasn't too hot and the hedges/trees along the Trans Pennine Trail shielded us from the heat of the Sun. However the walk from Lymm to Little Bollington along the Bridgewater Canal was in sunshine that was a little oppressive, the legs didn't want to go and the tongue longed for that refreshing drink at the "Swan with Two Nicks" an hour or so later!

In the morning the walk along the Tran Pennine Trail was a good pace, and it wasn't until we reached the outskirts of Lymm that mutinous grumbles were heard amongst the ranks. Lunch was taken on a bank that formed the edge of a field adjacent to the track that led to Lymm. Fed and watered, everyone was happy to set off on the remainder of the walk.
The most interesting sight along the canal was seeing the ship yard with lots of narrow boats being renovated and quite a few new ones in various stages of being built. It's always good to see a British manufcturing industry flourishing.

Some trees displayed good Autumnal colours. Apparently the reds and oranges should be more vivid this year as the current hot spell causes the chlorophyll change more quickly, giving rise to the colours.

Birds seen or heard today included: Jackdaw, Woodpigeon, Eurasian jay, Black-billed magpie, European robin, Long-tailed it, Common coot, Moorhen, Tufted duck, Mallard, Mute swan, Rook, Carrion crow, Blue tit and Great tit.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Swan with Two Nicks, where the local Dunham Massey brew, Big tree bitter went down well. However the bar prices didn't!

This walk is taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walking in the Vale of Clwyd and the Denbigh Moors", and is a walk that we really enjoyed last time we did it. This is a refreshing walk over Moel y Gaer, the site of an Iron Age hill fort. Again we will extend the walk to include Moelfre Isaf.

This walk uses two walks Dave Berry's book "Walks on the North Wales Coast." We have done our own version of the Conwy Mountain walk, but as yet we haven't included Bonlondeb Wood and Cwm Gyrach before. The first walk starts by exploring part of the magnificent walled town of Conwy and offers superb views throughout. The second walk explores the scenic hills and valleys around the Sychnant Pass with its ever changing views.
This walk is a repeat of the walk that some of us did in February this year when the weather was a little on the wet side. I dropped out after the Conwy Castle walls and Bodlondeb Wood circuit, so I'm looking forward to completing all of the circuit this time.

This walk includes the section of Offa's Dyke Path goes near Moel y Plas, Moel Gyw, Moel Llanfair and Boncyn y Waen-grogen. Her walk starts from Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, but we will start at Pentre Celyn about half a mile beyond Craigfechan.

At this time of the year it should give us the opportunity to appreciate the chaning appearances of the trees as Autumn approaches, and there is also the opportunity of a little foraging! We will probably visit St Bueno's chapel on the hill again and climb to the summit of Moel Maenefna.

This walk is taken from the Pathfinder Guide to the Peak District. Much of the walk is similar to the Mark Richard route that we have done several times before. Whilst it misses out Grindlow and Great Hucklow, it allows us to explore new sections of Eyam Moor.
This varied walk includes deep wooded valleys and heather moors and gives magnificent views all the way.

This is a low level walk, and although it it extends the walk a little it is well worth the extra effort to visit the ancient Bronze Age Cairns, they were quite impressive the last time we visited them, definately worth a second look!

It includes the main Roaches ridge, but misses out Hen Cloud. Instead it includes a new route back along Black Brook, and if we have plenty of energy left and it's not too late, Hen Cloud may be added as an extension.

The described part of this walk is taken from The Pathfinder Guide to Cheshire and includes sections of the Bridgewater canal and the Trans Pennine Trail as does the extension to Lymm. Whilst the walk explores the Deer park at Dunham Massey, it isn't planned to go into the house, but there may be an opportunity to do so at the end of the walk.

We arrived at the base of the Roaches and He Cloud to find them clouded in mist, and we set off optimistically hoping that it would clear by the time we reached the ridge. Thankfully the day got better and better and along the ride we were accompanied by a pleasantly cooling breeze.

Today we discovered a new route to the ridge via set of steps near Rockhall. a new return route enabled us to explore the Black Brook Valley, a location that we hadn't realised existed!

As ever the stroll along the top of the Roaches to the end of the ridge is delightful and the cleft known as Lud's Church nevere ceases to amaze me.

Birds seen or heard today included: Jakdaw, Kestrel, Raven, Red grouse, Meadow pipit, Long-tailed tit, Winter wren, Blackbird and Great tit.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Wilkes Head in Leek, where Hartington Bitter went down with the men in the group.

A superb day for walking, not too hot and not too cold, a two hankies day for me, almost perfect! We set off at a cracking pace of over 3 m.m.h, but that soon changed as we had to climb uphill in search of our ancestors!

New to us was the various information points near to each spot of interest, whoever is responsible should be congratulated. Thank you.

This section of the walk, in search of our ancestors never fails to impress me, the minimal climb uphill is worth the effort!

Lunch was taken around the hide overlooking Llyn Brenig. Only three decided to eat their lunch surrounded by what everyone else thought were probably droppings from Barn swallows that had nested on the roof space.

The surprise of the day was to see half a dozen cars drive up and down the minor road at the North end of the reservoir being filmed by the car in front, always with the yellow car last but one! Whatever they were being filmed for we don't know, but that is our challenge to find out!

Birds seen or heard today included: European robin, Goldfinch, Pied wagtail, Meadow pipit, Woodpigeon, Great tit, Carrion crow, Raven, Kestrel, Common buzzard, Great cormorant, Herring gull, Lesser black-backed gull, Tufted duck, Red grouse and Mallard..

After last week we were hoping that the forecast of a couple of showers would be true. Thankfully it was and most of the walk was done in warm sunshine. The showers were short and almost as soon as you got your waterproofs on the rain stopped and it was time to take them off again!

This was a very enjoyable walk despite Dave falling when he slipped as he got over a stone style and later Roger having a close encounter with some overgrown vegetation!

Birds seen or heard today were few and far between but included: Barn swallow, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Pied wagtail, Goldfinch, Kestrel, Red grouse, Black-billed magpie, Eurasian jay, Blue tit, Blackbird and Nuthatch.

We decided to visit Leek on the way back, not realising that road works in Buxton were causing horrendous queues and delays. Thankfully we remembered an alternative route that took us first towards Ashbourne and then through Harpur Hay. Buxton is a place we will avoid for the rest of the year.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Wilkes Head in Leek, where as ever the Hartington Bitter was quaffed with relish by most of us and I went home with my usual take-away!

What a superb day for walking, the weather and views were almost perfect (perfection of course can never be attained!).

Foraging today was official, and we started well with a bag full of scrumptious apples and we hadn't moved a foot! (Thanks to the abundance of apples on Fran and Tito's apple tree).
We set off along part of Offa's Dyke footpath and within a short distance came across a few walkers that were on their last stretch of the footpath. You could tell how happy they felt at being on the last stretch of the walk, when they smiled as they thought we we were on our first! Thankfully we were only doing part of it!
What a joy it is to meet other walkers and as today we were able to chat and exchange pleasantries.
Birds seen or heard today included: Chiffchaff, Barn swallow, Wheatear, Chaffinch, Blackbird, European robin, Nuthatch, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Raven, Woodpigeon, House sparrow and Great tit.
The walk was a little shorter than usual, but suited quite a few members of the group, particularly Fran and Tito who had been invited to entertain their son and daughter on their birthdays.

Cadair Bronwen and Cadair Berwyn 10th September 2011

We set off with high hopes that the weather today would be better than on our last visit to Cadair Bronwen and Cadair Berwyn. Unfortunately the weather forecast of a couple of showers proved wrong and from 10-00 to 13-00 we experienced rain, very strong winds and near the top we were walking in cloud. During this time we did get fleeting views with the sun appearing for a few seconds, giving us hope for better weather to come!

Thankfully as we approached the trig point on Cadair Berwyn, the clouds did lift and we had good views for the rest of the walk. I couldn't take our usual trig point photo as another walking group got there first and seemed to be glued to the trig point. We missed out Moel Sych and headed down the ridge of Foel Fawr, hoping to find a sheltered spot for lunch. This turned out to be a cairn/ wind shelter on Pennant just before turning right to cross Nant Cwm Tywyll.

After lunch conditions underfoot seemed to get wetter and wetter and the streams bigger and more difficult to cross, but we eventually made it to the stony track that led to Llandrillo. We finished the walk in sunshine, long enough for Mike and Martyn's trousers to have dried out. Only Dave with his new Brasher boots arrived back at the car with dry feet!

Birds seen or heard today included: Jackdaw, Barn swallow, House sparrow, Meadow pipit, Black-billed magpie, Wheatear, Common pheasant, Kestrel, Skylark and Red grouse.

An enjoyable walk that should really only be attempted after considerable period no rain!

We set off with dampness in the air and no views of the Vale of Clwyd below, but this wasn't enough to make me don waterproofs, others however did! As we approached Offas Dyke Path below Moel Llanfair the mist lifted and encouraged Dave J to head for the summit of Moel Gyw. The rest of us remained on the Offa's Dyke Path and decided to take lunch at 12-07 below Moel Gyw with views across the Vale of Clwyd and beyond.

The afternoon got better and better and we ended the walk in bright sunshine with temperatures a little too warm for ideal walking. In fact as we approached Graig-fechan we were grateful for the shaded path through the woods.

Birds seen or heard today included: Barn swallow, Wheatear, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Raven, Kestrel, Common buzzard, Woodpigeon, Meadow pipit, Stonechat, Black-billed magpie, Blackbird and great tit.

Overall this was a delightful walk, especially with the Sun shining in the afternoon and including one or two new paths for us to explore.

After finding the Rainbow Inn closed, we ended up at the Glasfryn where Weetwood's Cheshire Cat went down well and the Conwy Brewery's Celebration Ale wasn't bad either.

Conwy Mountain, Around Alltwen and Cwm Gyrach 3rd September 2011

The weather forecast wasn't good and we were expecting to get wet. Thankfully we had no rain at all until after lunch and even then it was very light and lasted for just over an hour. In the morning we had a lovely cooling breeze, but in the afternoon it became rather humid, so being able to remove waterproofs after an hour was blissful!

We were disappointed that the tide was so far out as we went along the harbour at Conwy, but it was the first time that we had seen the Mussel monument, an unusual addition to the harbour side in recognition of the Conwy Mussel trade.

One on Conwy Mountain, the views towards the castle and across the estuary to the Deganwy and the Great Orme were still good. The wild ponies obviously liked this side of their territory today and we must have seen more than twenty by the time we reached the Sychnant Pass.

The path round Alltwen usually passes a small lake/pond, but on this occasion it had totally dried up. The path down the Western slope wasn't easy to find with the high bracken and Gorse.

Lunch was taken about a mile after passing Y Dwygyfylchi (pubic house at Capelulo) at a spot overlooking the Fairy Glen.

As we approached Ty'n y ffrith two Red-billed chough called out to tell us they were around.

The return route was along the North Wales path to the Sychnant Pass and on to Conwy. As we approached the castle walls we notice that there was an archway and path to the South(to the right) of road the archway into the town. This is a much safer way for walkers to use and avoid crossing two roads that are quite busy at this junction.

Birds seen or heard today included: Herring gull, Lesser black-back gull, Black-headed gull, Great black-backed gull, Redshank, Curlew, Oystercatcher, Great cormorant, Mallard, Chaffinch, Great tit, Blue tit, Nuthatch, House sparrow, Jackdaw, Wheatear, Carrion crow, Raven, Red-billed chough, Kestrel, Common buzzard, Meadow pipit, Great spotted woodpecker, Common blackbird, European robin, House martin, Barn swallow and Stonechat.

What a glorious day this turned out to be, wall to wall blue sky for most of the walk and sunshine throughout. A cooling breeze would have been very welcome, and thankfully we did have one as we had lunch by the trig point on Moelfre Isaf.

The distant views were good despite being somewhat hazy, the shapes of Moel Fammau and the Little Orme could easily be identified as could the coast towards Rhyl and the offshore wind farms..

This seemed like an up and down roller coaster of a walk and we arrived back at the car more tired than the meagre 1604' should have made us! Overall a very enjoyable walk.

Birds seen or heard today included: House sparrow, Chaffinch, Lesser black-backed gull, Common buzzard, Carrion crow, Jackdaw, Eurasian jay, Black-billed magpie, Nuthatch, Raven, Goldfinch, Chough, European robin, Common blackbird, Chiffchaff, Stonechat, Skylark, Meadow pipit, Wheatear, House martin, Barn swallow and Kestrel.
A slow walk today because it is the time of the year when Blackberries and plums are ready to eat and on this occasion Parasol mushrooms were in abundance!

Morridge from Warslow 27th August 2011

Showers were on the agenda today, and that is what w got! although we wore our waterproofs for much of the walk, most of the time was just because we were too lazy to take them off! Thankfully the worst of the weather seemed to just miss us.
This turned out to be a more challenging walk than we expected, both in terms of the terrain covered and the route finding, particularly on the link paths to and from Warslow.
Lunch was taken at the Rey Memorial Viewpoint, so we could enjoy the view towards Hen Cloud and the Roaches with Shutlingsloe beyond. It was somewhat breezy at this point and I ended up chasing after a plastic bag and the lid of my lunch box, both of which had tried to escape!

Birds seen or heard today included: Barn swallows (over 70 around Warslow), House sparrow, Collared dove, Woodpigeon, Black-billed magpie, Common starling, Kestrel, Common buzzard, Carrion crow, Raven, Jackdaw, Pied wagtail, Wheatear, Grey heron, Chaffinch, Blue tit, Great tit, Goldfinch, Meadow pipit, Skylark, Common pheasant and Red grouse.
After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Wilkes Head in Leek where the the Hartington Bitter tasted superb. The take-away was good too!
Overall an enjoyable walk despite the being stung by many Nettles, the long wet grass in many of the fields, the boggy pastures churned up by cattle and the steep slippery mud paths that we encountered.
Warslow Village Hall is a good start point for a walk, especially with its toilets open to the public. No parking fee, although donations were welcome. Hopefully everyone that parks there makes one!

The Three Lakes Walk 25th August 2011

One I prepared earlier, but not spotted today!

Unusually for us this was an all male group, so some of the group were eagerly anticipating a walk free from discussions on recipes or babies and looking forward to deeper discussions on such as world economics!

We set off in bright sunshine, and as ever headed across the moors, no path on the ground, but at least we were confident that we knew where we were going!

Some of the views today were superb, especially towards Snowdonia. Moel Hebog, the Nantle Ridge, Y Llywedd, Yr Wyddfa, Moel Siabod and Tryfan showing particularly well.

We had lunch in the sunshine just after meeting what we thought was a lone walker, but he turned out to be employed by the local authority and was checking out footpaths!

There were a few boggy sections but overall the moors were much drier than we have experienced on earlier occasions and no-one ended up with wet feet.

After lunch we did get a few showers, but they didn't last long and the last couple were just a nuisance, do you put your waterproofs on or not. In most cases we would have been better to have left them in our rucksacks!

Birds seen or heard today included: Meadow pipit, Pied wagtail, House sparrow, Mistle thrush, Barn swallow, Kestrel, Carrion crow, Raven, Common buzzard, Snipe and Red kite.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Britannia Inn where Dave J enjoyed a J20 and Martyn enjoyed a pint of Coke as did Gordon. Roger enjoyed his usual cider and Time and Paul sampled a drop of the black stuff!

Overall this was a superb walk, even if we did get home a little later than usual for a Thursday.

Hopefully the Lees bitter (acceptable to the landlady) will arrive by the time we visit next week!

This walk is based on Dave Berry's "Llantysilio Mountain" walk. We have done this walk several times, but usually adapt it to suit ourselves. Perhaps we will complete the earlier part of the walk as described, even though it misses out the summit of Moel y Gamelin. Possible extension to Cyrn-y-Brain and Sir Watkin's Tower. Always a good walk on a fine day. This roller coaster walk can be more of a challenge than you might expect!

The described part of the walk is taken from Dave Berry’s book “Walks Around Y Bala and Penllyn”. This is only a 5 mile walk, but the extra miles is linking the start of the walk in Sarnau with Llanderfel, using different paths on the outward and return journeys.

The outward route will include using a path through the Nature Reserve Cors y Sarnau. There is a good chance of seeing Red kites in this area.

This walk is taken from Lorna Jenner's book "Walking in the Vale of Clwyd". This is a varied walk along the Afon Aled and its tributaries, through rolling pastures edge with thick hedges and pockets of woodland, with a backdrop of mountains. Extension to include Mynydd Tryfan.

It is a long time since we did Chnict and even longer since we included the Moelwyns in the walk as well. This is quite a demanding walk, so lets hope for a good day weatherwise which will then give us good views of the Snowdon group of mountains and the ridge from Chnict to Moel Siabod.

This walk is taken from Dave Berry's books "Walks in the Hidden Heart of North Wales" and Walks Around Hiraethog Moors and Lakes" whichever you prefer. Same walks, just different covers, and one walk has been extended a little in the former book. Llyn Aled, Llyn Alwen and the Alwen Reservoir are the three "lakes" visited. In the past sections have been quite boggy to say the least, but considering the lack of rain of late, the going should be relatively good. This has become one of my favourite moorland walks, although it isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Pennington Flash and Martin Mere 22nd August 2011

Not the original walk planned, but this turned out to be a glorious day for walks around Pennington Flash and Martin Mere, although the bright sunshine often meant that many of the colours on the birds were difficult to see.

It started off well with large numbers of Greenfinch and Bullfinch visiting the feeders at Pennington Flash, but the star bird of the day was a Juvenile Cuckoo showing well at Martin mere. A couple of Willow tits at Pennington Flash feeding station and two Whooper swans at Martin mere were a bonus and the latter unexpected too.

Birds seen or heard today included: Common coot, Moorhen, Mallard, Canada goose, Mute swan, Great crested grebe, Tufted duck, Great tit, Blue tit, Bullfinch, European robin, Woodpigeon, Common pheasant, Black-billed magpie, Lapwing, Great cormorant, Common cuckoo, Whooper swan, Tree sparrow, Barn swallow, Black-headed gull, Grey heron, Ruff, Feral pigeon, Herring gull, Chaffinch, Greylag goose, Great black-backed gull and Kestrel.

A good day birdwatching as we walked around these two very popular venues, finishing with an enjoyable meal at Sue's.

We set off from Croesor quite optimistic that the weather might hold out and the light showers forecast would be all that we would get. We did get only one shower, but it lasted from 12-20 until we arrived back at the car 3 hours later! At least it wasn't cold, but we did get wet and at the end of the day I could pour water out of my boots!

Nevertheless the climb up to the top of Cnicht was quite enjoyable, with slightly more scrambling than I had remembered. We passed over the summit, not spotting the small cairn described by the Nuttalls and headed down the Northern ridge towards Llyn yr Adar and onto the Rhosydd Quarry.

The route to the quarry is always difficult to find, especially so today with the mist/cloud around us. Thanks to the Memory Map GPS we did eventually arrive at the the quarry and at one time found us heading towards Llyn Stwlan, a possible route back to Croesor, but not the one we wanted. After retracing our steps through the quarry we eventually found the right path.

No photographs were taken after lunch as we didn't stop, Dave ate his lunch on the hoof and I ate my butties back at the car!

Despite everything it was quite an enjoyable walk, ending with the delight of changing into a complete set of dry clothes!

Llanfair Talhaiarn, Moel Unben and Mynydd Dir 18th August 2011

On Wednesday morning a group of twelve was expected to start the walk today. However by the time we set off we were down to five, and of those five only three made it to the Brit. The one bonus of the small numbers was that everyone had two pieces of Martyn's fruit cake (baked yesterday and too soon to have added any preservative).

The start of the walk was at the picturesque village of Llanfair Talhaiarn with its car park, PC and picnic site beside the river.

This is a superbly varied walk, frequently giving panoramic views in all directions. The best however was the view of Snowdonia from Moel Siabod, Y Llywedd, Snowdon, Tryfan and the Carneddau that we enjoyed from Moel Unben.

Further round we had good views towards the coast with the foothills behind Llandulas and Abergele in the middle distance.

Once again the Heather gave fantastic spreads of purple across the slopes of Moel Unben and later on beside a stream Himalayan Balsam seemed to have taken over the banks.

Birds seen or heard today included: House martin, Barn swallow, Common swift, Common buzzard, Stonechat, House sparrow, Carrion crow, Raven, Jackdaw, Eurasian jay, Wheatear, Meadow pipit, Common pheasant, Woodpigeon and Nuthatch.

At least two members of the group enjoyed the excellent pint of Lees bitter at the Britannia Inn at Pentre Halkyn.

We wish a speedy recovery for several of the walking group that were unfortunately away today on sick leave!

Not a brilliant day for walking weather wise, but at least we didn't get too wet unless you were leading the way through chest high bracken! Very warm and at times rather humid, cooling breezes were few and far between. A good and varied walk, but the extension that looked good on the map, didn't meet with Fran's approval! deep down I probably agree, and when the walk is repeated, this particular extension won't. Sorry Dave, after all your extra miles checking the route ahead to see if the rest of us could follow. At least you did get us out of our worst difficulty, even if we did end up going round the wrong side of a farm to get back on track!
Overall, quite an up and down walk along river valleys and across farm land with a few challenging stiles and gates, but at least the two fords crossed were easy!
The unusual event of the day was seeing various farm vehicles approaching us as one crossed another ford, carrying a trailer of fence posts as was an other vehicle, one carrying fence wire and the other had a device for hammering home the fence posts. At least they smiled as we took appropriate steps to get out of their way!
Birds sen or heard today included: Common buzzard (quite a lot, especially juveniles), Black-billed magpie, Barn swallow, House martin, Eurasian jay, Carrion crow, Raven, Winter wren and House sparrow.
After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Britannia Inn at Halkyn. The Lees bitter went down a treat, especially if you had forgotten your "platypus"!

The weather was kind to us and the showers that were forecast didn't materialize, although as we were eating our lunch, the skies darkened above us. Thankfully they didn't release any of the wet stuff.

On previous occasions we have done this walk in the Winter months which has the advantage that we didn't have to wade through chest high bracken! However the much of the walk seemed new to me, despite the fact that I know we have done the walk before!

Overall this is a delightful, I feel I'm quoting someone here, walk with many challenges to test your route finding following route descriptions and relating it to the OS map!

Our lunch spot by Llyn Caer Euni was also delightful, despite the boggy areas around it.

Birds seen or heard today included: Common buzzard (at least 20 different birds seen on route), House sparrow, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Carrion crow, Common pheasant, Redpoll, Linnet, Raven Meadow pipit, Collared dove, Woodpigeon, Herriing gull, Lesser black-backed gull and Pied wagtail.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the New Inn at Pontblyddin where the Reverand James brew went down well. Celia even enjoyed her large pot of tea!

Around the Llantysilio Mountains 4th August 2011

We arrived at the start with even the low tops decked in cloud and still raining. We had no choice but to go over the road and have tea or coffee and for some cake and biscuits in the Ponderosa cafe. Enjoying ourselves so much in the cafe, we hadn't noticed that it had stopped raining and the clouds had almost completely lifted.

We set off on our usual route along the main path to the summit of Moel y Faen, but then set off for the Berwyn Quarry instead of continuing on the main ridge. Much of this route was just contouring around the hill through the flowering heather and gorse, in places giving a superb and contrasting appearance to the slopes.

Eventually we returned to the main ridge path and the slog up to the trig point on Moel Morfydd. This was to be a lunch spot for the day, with the Sun shining and a delightfully cooling breeze taking the earlier humidity away.

Just after lunch I received a text from Sylvia announcing the arrival of her new granddaughter, Jocelyn Ann Broad. No wonder the Sun was shining!

Not many birds today, but we were lucky enough to see a Badger trundling towards us along the minor road near Bwlch y Groes. It didn't seem to notice us, but veered off the road to the East of the road and disappeared.

Many of the gates along the path to Plas Norway had been replaced with new bridleway type gates, but there stiles near the tip and Plas Norway are still missing.

Birds seen or heard today included: Meadow pipit, Carrion crow, Raven, Stonechat, Red grouse and Common buzzard.

After walk drinks were enjoyed at the Bridge Inn at Pontblyddyn where Cottage Vulcan was the beer that went down best.

I arrived home, wondering how far the decorators had manged to get on during the day, to find that the floor boards in one corner had collapsed beneath them! Thankfully it happened during the removal of the old paper and before a new work had been done.

Elidir Fawr and Y Garn 20th July 2011

The weather very warm and humid, and in the main without the relief of a cooling breeze.

Not exactly a perfect day for a walk that included a relentless 2000+' climb across steep grassy slopes at the start and finished with an equally steep and even more punishing on the knees descent from Llyn y Cwn to Gwasnadant. Distant views were somewhat misty and the very high tops were often in cloud, but thankfully didn't cover Elidir Fawr and Y Garn when we were on them.

We were in the hills for over eight hours, the rest of the group can thank Martyn for enabling them to enjoy the hills for longer as they frequently him to catch them up! He did have an excuse on one occasion, where he decided to walk with three guys attempting the Welsh 3s, after all they did have a radio and were listing to the test match!

Once Elidir Fawr has been conquered, the ridge section of this walk is superb and every step has fantastic views in every direction, almost making you forget the horrible decent and road walk that awaits you at the end.

Birds seen or heard today included: Barn swallow, House martin, Greenfinch, Carrion crow, Pied wagtail, Raven, Stonechat, Meadow pipit, Blackbird, Mistle thrush and Redpoll.
Overall a great walk despite the downside!

Craig Adwy-wynt and the Afon Maes Valley 28th July 2011

A day of unexpected events. The day started, with finding Dave J stopped on the roadside with a car that refused to go any further. Phoning Fran via Celia we found that they were only a few miles away from our location near Llong. However everyone in the car had a go at trying to explain where they were, before Wendy was able to understand how to get to us. For some unknown reason they had taken the turning towards the A55, the opposite direction to us! They did arrive just a few minutes before the AA came to Dave's rescue!

LeRoi transferred to Fran's car and we left Dave to wait for the AA and headed to Llanelidan.

We started the walk about an hour later than usual, hoping that Dave and Sylvia would meet up with us near to Nantclwyd Hall. They managed to join up with us as we were having lunch on Craig Adwy-wynt. This turned out to be an excellent point to catch up with us as Roger provided everyone with some of Margaret's much acclaimed Welsh cakes and Sue Pelissier provided some of her very moreish homemade shortbread. Everyone's thanks go to Margaret and Sue.

This wasn't really a good day for walking, very warm and very humid, but at least we didn't get wet! The Craig Adwy-wynt despite the humidity is always good and varied, but we were still glad to take lunch on the limestone outcrops.

At Llanelidan, Tito decided that the best option was to relax in the car as the rest of us headed for the Afon Maes valley. When we got back to the car, I think most uf accepted that he had made the right choice!

Aran Fawddwy and More for Some July 2011

We arrived in Cwm cwyarch to find that the farmer at Blaencwyarch had made a new car park (donations via an honesty box with funds going to the Mountain Rescue).

Another glorious largely sunny day with a pleasantly cooling breeze once we got above 2000'. Martyn and Roger only went a far as Aran Fawddwy before deciding to descend, Celia, Mike and Dave went along the ridge as far as Aran Benllyn and Mike and Dave included Pen yr Allt Uchaf before reaching the head of Hengwm.

Distant views were superb all day, although at times a little hazy. Lunch was taken at Drws Bach before taking the final push to the summit!

The Arans were popular today, walkers seemed to coming from all directions.

As ever the descent from Aran Fawddwy along the fence was very boggy in places and even the boards didn't prevent our boots getting wet.

The steep descent through Cwm Cwyarch between Glasgwm and Creigiau Camddwr was quite dramatic at times and the path wasn't easy to follow. We arrived back at the car with knee joints creaking in protest, but they soon revived after a couple pints of Lees bitter at the Crown Hotel at Llandegla, where we met up with Sarah again. She informed us that the they are now open from 12-00 and that she was now doing the cooking.

Overall a good but tiring walk.
